A Day at the Races has now become one of my favourite Queen albums and I have been listening to News of the World alot recently. I don't know wether the album is up with Queen's strongest (e.g Queen II, SHA, ANATO, Innuendo) or just an average Queen album. Persnonally I think it's a good album with greats (excluding WWRY AND WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS) such as Spread Your Wings, Sheer Heart Attack, It's Late....... Roger's Drumming is probably more technical than A Day at the Races, Freddie's singing is probably at par, Brian's Guitar work is amazing and John's Bass work is very good. Get Down Make Love does not impress me. I'd like to know what you think of the album, Is it One of Queen's best, Do you like the style and also about the lack of use of Queen's trademark harmonies which had been used in previous albums. |

The album with Roger's best drum sound to date, in my opinion. |
Holly2003 29.12.2009 13:27 |
Definitely in the top five, which imo would be Queen 2, SHA, NATO, NOTW & ADATR. One of those albums which isn't perfect ("GDML" is poor by Queen standards, and "Fight From the Inside" is average) but the highpoints are really high. It has one of Queen's best songs - "All Dead, All Dead" - which has fantastic orchestrated guitars, and the best group or run of songs on any Queen album i.e. "Sleeping on the Sidewalk", "Who Needs You" , "It's Late" & "My Melancholy Blues". Finally, "It's Late" is far and away Queen's best hard rock song, and one of the under-rated rock songs of the 1970s. The variety of songs is incredible, and the power of the WWRY/WATC intro. compares to the opening minutes of Bat Out of Hell for decadent anthemic rock. |

it,s late, absolutley rocks. one of queen,s best songs(i may have said this before lol). far better than borap as a classic rock song. smouldering burner of a song,then.... .it,s all to late. the drums kick in ,and the song grabs you by the balls, and chucks you out the window.. perfect. |

i just got this album for christmas actually. roger's drummer is indeed very very good. i personally think it is very good. definitely one of my favorites. i quite like it. it serves to my tastes but thats just my opinion. it could be different for everyone. i definitely think it is one of their best. |
Angeline 29.12.2009 14:37 |
My Melancholy Blues might be my favourite Queen song. |
mooghead 29.12.2009 17:08 |
The album sounds very 'thin' to me. Its Late would have sounded a million times better on the previous album, not just 'in place' but the production would have been better. I see this album as the start of a decline. The first Queen album that included 'filler' and relied on great singles to shift units. |
fjac1980 29.12.2009 21:02 |
the more "hardrocker" queen's album. SHA, IL, WWRY rocks forever. MMB, SYW and WNY puts the calm after the storm. |

One of my favouite Queen albums, along with A Day at the Races. Brilliant album. |

News of the world is in my top 6, Queen2, ANATO, ADATR, SHA, Queen, NOTW..... Best songs for me are The overplayed, but iconic "we are the champions"........."spread your wings"...."It's late" and one of my all time favs "my melancholoy blues" The album has no filler, but my least favorite is "fight from the inside" while "get down mak love" isn't my favorite freddie song from that era, it still kicks ass |

NOTW was something like an overseen treasure for a long time for me...bought it back in '92 when I was more in to the 80s Queen stuff. Only years later I seriously started to listen to it and sice them I love it...especially all dead, it's late and get down make love. Recently I have played who needs you over and over again on my mp3 player on the way to work and back. |

I love this album, I remember the first time I heard it about 15 years ago. It had a number of songs that really blew me away, All Dead All Dead, Spread You Wings, It's Late and My Melancholy Blues. It's interesting that you speak of NOTW and ADATR in the same thread, as NOTW was really a reaction to the complexity of previous albums. In Brian's own works the band, 'Wondered what would happen if we recorded a quick one.' |

This is the first Queen album I ever bought and that was purchased in November of 1977. This is the record that got me hooked on Queen and for the last 32 years it's still my favorite along with Queen II. I had it on today before I even knew this thread was out there. I agree with Rick... Roger's best drum sound was on this album. I played this to death back in the 70's!!! This was the LP that finally put Queen on the map here in the States. |

It looks like WWRY is overused and many forgot what a simple and brilliant idea it was.... Sleeping On The Sidewalk... Just for the sake of it. So simple and creative... |

Heya..Jazz78....like you...."News Of The World" was the 1st Queen LP (that's a record for those of you unfamilar) that I bought.....1977. I played it so much, it got worn out! Back then I thought nothing of writing on the cover LOL. http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/42/l_d87d2679373b4cb6ba894b3a78618442.jpg Check it out! It's a ink etching of the album cover, I made it in High School in class waaay back in 1985. Regarding the complexity of "NOTW". Geez...what to say....all I know is, I still rock out to the whole CD/MP3 collection. |

I love Innuendo, some of my all time favorite songs are on there, but in no way is it as good as news of the world. NOTW is a band in their prime, and even the weaker songs like fight from the inside is better then Innuendo's Headlong, I can't live with you, Deliha, and the hitman. Not that those songs are horrible by any means, but these tune arn't on par with 70's Queen. |

Some high points, but to me it was the first Queen album with substandard (by Queen standards) songs: Get Down Make Love, Sleeping On The Sidewalk, Who Needs You. Some of these are IMHO weak and underproduced, Who Needs You in particular sounding dangerously close to a demo. First Queen album to feature an uninspired 'generic sing-along anthem' (Spread Your Wings), a style that they eventually could write/perform in their sleep (Save Me, Friends Will Be Friends, etc). |
cacatua 31.12.2009 20:50 |
One of the best IMO. I love the eclective quality of it. |

yea, another Queen album with lots of different styles to enjoy. "who needs you" is another underated gem. |

Sleeping on the Sidewalk substandard? Not sure many would agree with that. I think it's a great song. I wouldn't have said it was under produced, as I think it was intentionally a live take. In fact the whole album was intended to be a more raw, simpler production than its predecessors. That was what they were trying to achieve I thought? I don't really know why people don't like FWBF. I quite like it, and I always liked the way it sat between WWRY and WATC at the end of the magic tour. I thought it worked well. And I thing SYW is a good song, better (or more interesting at least) live I would say. |

One of my favourite Brian songs, it features IMO his greatest every lead vocal performance. It's one of the few songs which I'm happy that Brian or Roger sang instead of Freddie. I love Brian's joy at being discovered; it truly reminds me why Brian and the others became rock stars in the first place. As for FWBF, it's my favourite song on AKOM. I think it's wonderful! |

Obviously a lot of people didn't know it but always appreciated when we finished. Was great fun to play too. A favourite of mine! |

Good album. Not as great as previous ones. We Will Rock You - 7/10(but it has a massive impact) We are the Champions - 10/10 - Great song Sheer Heart Attack - 10/10 - High energy All Dead All Dead - 7/10 - Quite good. I like the guitar Spread Your Wings - 10/10 - Excellent Fight from the Inside - 8/10 - Unique Get Down Make Love - 6/10 - Queen's poorest song of 1970s Sleeping on the Sidewalk - 8/10 - Good rocker Who Needs You - 8/10 - Fun and easy to listen to It's Late - 10/10 - A real classic My Melacholy Blues - 8/10 - Interesting. |

this album was a major letdown for me. I know what they were trying to do, but lets face it, after the build up of their first 5 albums, this was a crash and burn and they never got it back. |

We Will Rock You — 10/10 (very catchy song) We are the Champions — 7/10 (highly overrated) Sheer Heart Attack — 10/10 (my favourite from this album, great energic rocker by Roger Taylor) All Dead All Dead — 9/10 (another one good Brian's ballad) Spread Your Wings — 8/10 to album version and 10/10 to live version (guitars should be heavy, like in BBC one) Fight from the Inside — 9/10 (not best Roger's song, but still very good) Get Down Make Love — 8/10 (catchy tune and odd but very cool middle section) Sleeping on the Sidewalk — 10/10 (very good) Who Needs You — 10/10 (great track by John in same vein as Misfire) It's Late — 10/10 (one of best Queen's rockers ever) My Melacholy Blues — 8/10 (slow and catchy) We Will Rock You (1991 Bonus Remix "Ruined" by Rick Rubin) (& all others) — 5/10 (really bad remix, but some new gutars makes it interesting) We Are the Champions (Ruined by Rick Rubin) — 1/10 (crap) |

This was my very first Queen album. Well, I bought it on cassette. :) I couldn't believe how different the album was. When I was in high school, Nirvana and the "alternative" genre had begun and people loved how "different" rock was with Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. At least in America anyway. I told people, "check out Queen's 'News of the World,' now that's alternative in just ONE album...in 1977!" You've got the rocking anthems of WWRY and Champions, then the hardest rock song of Queen's catalog, Sheer Heart Attack. Follow it by a completely different All Dead, bluesy Sidewalk, depressive Melancholy...it's amazing from beginning to end. |
