And I don't know why, but it's impossible not to fall in love with the melody while listening. I really don't understand why is so underrated. To me is a highlight in the album. Being simple and all, no Brian, drum synths but orchestra instruments, it's great. Maybe it's underrated beacause it wasn't very promoted and it's kind of a song to Highlander movie-related but to me it turned great. I heard that the original song had Brian on it but he and John had a fight and John ended up taking Freddie and colling some orchestra guys to play along. Is there any demos? What's your opinion on the song? |
john bodega 05.11.2009 02:32 |
I've never liked it. The obnoxious saxophone and the awful, cretinous 80's drum sounds ... which is really a pity because I think Freddie sounds tremendous on the track. I always wanted to hear it sped up into a "I Was Born To Love You" affair. |
mike hunt 05.11.2009 02:55 |
I love the song. great vocals and sax performance. I'm probably in the minority in loving this song. |
Angeline 05.11.2009 03:30 |
This song has always instinctively made me cringe and one of the few that I just hate. Perhaps I haven't listened carefully enough - off to give it another go... |
Angeline 05.11.2009 03:32 |
Ok it's definitely the synths - they ruin the song. Why did they do that? |
john bodega 05.11.2009 04:37 |
I have a soft spot for the melody, I think Freddie does great with it. I feel like I'm in a fucking chocolate commercial as soon as I hear those woeful "click" sounds with the drums, and that FUCKING SAX ... leave that shit to blow-hards like Kenny G, it has no place on a Queen track. |
prescott2811 05.11.2009 06:09 |
ohh come you guys... for one its a typical John Deacon song, the song is pure love, a pure love classic, I think its the same league as 39 when it came to non single release's. Its a great Queen song, yeah doesn't have Brian May on it. Soo?? |
Voice of Reason 2018 05.11.2009 07:55 |
I don't think it's underrated. Weak song, weak words, weak performance. |

You'd think they would have heeded their own warning. |
prescott2811 05.11.2009 08:32 |
The Backing track sounds fine... It shows Queen doing wa they always do best, trying different styles. An on this 1 really worked well, |
john bodega 05.11.2009 09:26 |
It worked really well in that they were emulating a really naff style of music that becomes almost instantly dated. For what it is (mid-80's love song shtick) it's great. That just doesn't happen to be everyone's cup of tea. |
A Word In Your Ear 05.11.2009 10:43 |
I actually like the song, but what would have been good (for the album, that is.) get rid of the Sax solo & replace it with a Guitar solo. They could have left the sax solo just for the soundtrack of the film. |
dragon-fly 05.11.2009 11:00 |
I wouldn't call it the most underrated song. Just ok. Some songs on earlier albums are definitely underrated.... but not this one. |

MmP wrote: One Year Of Love is the most underrated Queen songNo, I do not believe that's true. In my opinion the most underrated Queen song is "White Queen". It has most of Queen's trademarks (killer guitar, vocal harmonies second to none, key and rhythm changes etc.), while OYOL has none of the above. At the same time One Year is relatively known because it was featured in a blockbuster movie and its sequel, albeit briefly. Those movies are still being re-released in various formats, which makes them even more well-known. Mr. Joe Public doesn't know "White Queen", in part because the last official release it received (not re-release, mind you) was the "Box of Trix" set back in the early 90's. Before that was the first EP, and even before that was the second Queen album. In all fairness, Queen have plenty of underrated songs ("Sail Away Sweet Sister", "Lily of the Valley", "Was It All Worth It" etc.) and it's hard to name just one. I've actually been toying with the idea of making a compilation for personal use called "Queen: The Underrated Songs". V. |

The song is boring. Nothing more, nothing less. |

Pain is So Close To Pleasure is more underrated in this case. |

Not my favorite Queen song. Just doesn't trip my trigger. The vocals are lovely, though. |

One of the best studio performace of Freddie Mercury can be found instantly in OYOL, I've always loved this song, I must be nohest at the same time by saying I found a littel wieird that sax sound instead of a Brian touch, but it's fne anyway an unusual. I really like the song, the lirics, the way freddie takes his voice to the limit, the way "that love" is expressed and comunicated in a song...Simply I Love the track. |
Major Tom 05.11.2009 18:56 |
I like it, though it's not great. Great vocal preformance from Freddie as always.. |
dougie 05.11.2009 19:44 |
"One Year of Love" is a great example of Freddie's lack of vocal restraint in the '80s. His credo then seemed to be: When in doubt, belt it out! This track called for a heartfelt, understated vocal, but what Freddie offers up is just plain loud and very impersonal. Sad. Thank God "These Are The Days of Our Lives" didn't get the same treatment five years later. |
AlexRocks 05.11.2009 20:47 |
"One Year Of Love" is GREAT and definitely underrated!! It is AMAZING! It is also brilliant for a band from the 1970's that could do a 1980's style song SO GOOD!!! What's really great is hearing it on "Classic Queen" right after "Stone Cold Crazy"!!!! MINDBLOWING!!! |
Dusta 05.11.2009 21:53 |
This is very true. It is one of the things which makes Queen such a great band.

A bit surprised how many other Queen fans like this song. I don't care brian isn't on it. Not every song should sound the same. A very underated track, but Queen have lots more underated songs than OYOL. |
queenfanbg 06.11.2009 13:44 |
Its a nice and gentle love song... |
Holly2003 06.11.2009 16:33 |
It's horribly oversung by Freddie. Very grating at times, especially the "prisoner of love" bit. |
beautifulsoup 06.11.2009 17:47 |
I love the melody. Hate the sleazy saxophone; puts it into the realm of a porn movie soundtrack. |
gooddrills 06.11.2009 19:26 |
It's good to hear everyone's opinion on the song. Personally I like it and I love Freddies vocal on it. It fitted in well with the film it was written for and I liked it on the subsequent album release. I notice PISCTP gets a really bad press off quite a few people, I really love the song and love Freddies falsetto vocal. Makes me smile every time I hear it. |
cacatua 06.11.2009 21:08 |
I like OYOL. It is such a complete break from the other Queen songs that it is like a sudden breeze from a different direction than the prevailing winds. I don't care if it is over the top. |
mike hunt 10.11.2009 04:00 |
Don't lose your head is the worst song on a kind of magic, and pain and pleasure is right up there. The album has it's moments, like one vision, the title track, one year of love, who wants to live forever and princess of the universe are solid tunes. |
louvox 12.11.2009 18:53 |
One of their worst songs ever! Badly recorded with no imagination what so ever This song would have made Michael Bolton proud |
4 x Vision 13.11.2009 11:38 |
It's alright. I liked it the first time I heard it due to Freddie's strong vocals. I actually quite like Zeb's idea too of speeding it up. Kind of sang it in my head that way and it could sound quite cool. NOT WITH ME SINGING IT THOUGH. |
Gregsynth 13.11.2009 13:02 |
It's a pretty good song--mostly because of Freddie's vocal. |

Thank God "These Are The Days of Our Lives" didn't get the same treatment five years later. Totally agree. It's unlistenable due to nobody having the stones to tell Freddie to turn it down a couple of notches. Cheesy song with one of Freddie's worst vocal performances. In short, it sucks. |

I think its a good song, but kill the Sax!!! I like the fade out as well...For those that say this song was "80's shtick" and "dated almost immediately" then they must not like the entire album because most of the other songs have all the same elements you complained of minus the Sax...There's too much synth all over the album and drum machines run rampant throughout. |
