so,he wasnt there then... i wonder how much this little PR stunt of crashing a spaceship into a crater on the moon just to find water cost? has anyone told NASA that we do actually have water on this planet or have they bombed everywhere else and are searching for new places to blow up? |
john bodega 09.10.2009 14:51 |
I think NASA's already tiny resources (tiny compared to what we should be spending, at least) could be aimed elsewhere .... I mean for fuck's sake, if we're going back to space, FUCK the moon - let's do Mars. Let's do something we haven't fucking done before ..... seriously, I miss the 60's space program. Fighter pilots helping to design and build their own flimsy lunar modules and beating the commies to the Moon. Having said that, I suppose it's another neat "now we know" moment in science - they reckon there's water up there! Woot for the future of improvised lunar concrete and mortar. I've uploaded the impact and highlighted the moment itself. I must say though I was expecting a bigger kind of flash. I'm talking a FLASH (DUN) AAAAH-AAAAAH kind. |

what gets me is that there's vast oceans and seas on this planet that havent been thoroughly explored and yet the US and NASA spend billions sending a Sinclair C5 into space and crash land it on the moon just to see if they can put a McDonalds there in a few years time.. i often think that the loons really are in charge of the worlds governments just to make me question my own sanity because i know damn well i would spend the money on something more worthwhile on THIS planet, like for instance,HEALTHCARE and JOBS! [plus it also reminds me of that bit in Independence Day when the father mentions the $33,000 on a bog seat] |

Oh absolutely. I mean - if you look at it as whether it's a choice between exploration and fixing the world's problems, then one would easily say 'let's fix the world's problems. But it's not a choice between those two - there's money enough to do both, if the governments of the world were only a bit more responsible with it! And as I figure it, if we can't have peace on Earth and health care for all, then we might as well expand human knowledge a bit. |
catqueen 09.10.2009 15:31 |
Hmmm.... hope its not a plan to kill two birds with one stone... send all new social welfare applicants and health care applicants to the moon and save social spending... Seriously though, exploration and knowledge are great, but in Ireland, we have (relatively) free third level education. This is now coming under threat, as there is "not enough money" for that. So, hey there's an idea, lets cut down on education to see if we can blow up the moon with what we save! |
Micrówave 09.10.2009 15:37 |
Yes, but if we ever do go to the Moon again, it would be nice to find somewhere to get a drink. That was Armstrong and Aldrin's biggest complaint. |

People have tried to open bars and nightclubs on the moon but they never do much business. No atmosphere apparently. Ba da boom, tish. |

Speaking in the 'nerd person,' the discovery of ice would make energy needs for a lunar outpost more manageable. altho eventually helium-3 mining may be done by humans, initially the project would be robotic. nuclear energy using h-3 as a fuel produces no radioactive waste (Harrison Schmitt, you're a hero!). microwaving lunar regolith for just 30 seconds produces something like concrete, and if we ever have another human presence on the moon, this will be critical since above-surface habitats (for the long-term) would have to protect against the radiation. maybe bunkers built into the rims of craters. the application of mag-lev transport would also be intruiging in the low-grav environment. I really applaud Armstrong's vision of Mars exploration, but my question is -- why can't we do both? Zeb and other posters correctly allude to the answer -- politics -- ugh. the other useful outcome includes new pictures of Apollo 11's landing site, which helps puts the conspiracy theories of faked landings to rest. as if 842 lbs of h-3 enriched lunar rock wasn't enough proof, since Earth's magnetosphere prevents the h-3 particles arriving in the solar wind. The research may also reinforce the collision-accretion theory of how the moon got here in the first place, since its distance from Earth and action upon our planet plays a crucial role in sustaining life. Maybe bin Laden's on the dark side? ;) |
