you know the rules, follow em. I like this song. it doesn't remind me of anyone, it is just really cool. I think it is very interesting the way it used so many things that would be immpossible to replicate live. 4/5 stars |

Do we have a thread for every song they ever wrote ahead of us? Cos to be honest I think you may find that the serious answers dry up before you complete the set. |

I just love this song. I still don't know any of the words - half of it still sounds like nonsense to me, but I love it! The music at the beginning and then Freddie's vocals are just brilliant. One of my favourite songs on Queen 2. |

Freddie's Delilah: I've just never taken the time to read them... *guilty grin* I mean, I know a few words ("fairy dandy tickling the fancy of his lady friend... the nymph in yellow"), but some of them just sound like pure nonsense to me :) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ most of it is old-english for modern-day professions (it's designed to add to the mystique of the song) there's a teacher (Pedagogue), a horsetrainer/tender (ostler), a lecher/pervy bloke (satyr), vagabond/tramp (Tatterdemalion), junketer is less clear (it can be someone whogoes on trips excursions paid for by someone else or it could be a rag-and-bone man (someone who collects junk) the rest are fairy names and self explanatory professions hope this helps |

she's only 13, so leave the kid alone! Fairy feller's is a great song. Original, creative, great lryics. Most know the song is about a painting freddie liked, so he wrote a song about it. |

One of my favourite songs on Queen 2.Just for you, here is the words He's a fairy feller.. the fairy folk have gathered, round the new moon's shine To see the feller crack a nut, at night's noon time to swing his axe he swears, as he climbs he dares To deliver the master stroke, ploughman wagoner will' and types Politician with senatorial pipe, He's a dilly dally oh Pedagogue squinting wears a frown, and a satyr peers under lady's gown He's a dirty fellow, What a dirty laddie, oh Tatterdemalion and the junketer, there's a thief and a dragonfly trumpeter He's my hero ah, Fairy dandy tickling the fancy Of his lady friend, the nymph in yellow (can we see the master stroke) What a quaere fellow Soldier sailor tinker tailor ploughboy, waiting to hear the sound And the arch magician presides, he is the leader Oberon and Titania watched by a harridan Mab is the queen and there's a good apothecary man Come to say hello, fairy dandy tickling the fancy Of his lady friend, the nymph in yellow What a quaere fellow The ostler stares with hands on his knees, come on mister feller Crack it open if you please Now here is the painting from Richard Dadd, called (you guessed it) Fairy Fellers Master Stroke. Its the painting that inspired Freddie to write the song. link |

MeganEnright 24.04.2007 15:54 |
I gotta agree. The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke is a great song! I love the sound of Freddie's voice in it ... it's just so different from his "normal" singing voice. It's a great exapmle of how revolutionary Queen really was! They were able to adapt to a variety of singing styles and thats part of what made then soooooooo amazing. Also, just thought I'd add that the song is, evidentally based on a painting by Richard Dadd. If you google it you can see an example of the painting. The song is a very literal description of the it. You can see the "nymph in yellow" and "Queen Mab" and obviously the "Fairy Feller" swinging an axe over hi head. It's very cool |
MeganEnright 24.04.2007 16:00 |
In response to Brenski's comment: an apothecary is like a pharmecist (I haven't a clue how to spel that!) so in a sense you were right as pharmecists ARE chemists (sort of lol) and in case some one was wondering, here are the meanings of some of the other strange words from the song: Tatterdamelion: appropriately means tattered or torn Junketeer: sort of like a picnic or outside festival involving food The picture that this song portrays is all about building a new carriage for Queen Mab (for those who dont know, Queen Mab is the ficticous Dream Fairy from Romeo "and Juliet") |
brENsKi 24.04.2007 18:02 |
Megan, I already did the other meanings on the previous page ;-) |

I wanted to start a discussion on this song, but luckily, there's already one. What I find interesting is that if you consider that english was not Freddie's mother tongue (it's his first language, but it was obviously not his mother's first tongue, which would be Parsi). What I mean is that he didn't think that Freddie had a so great knowledge of middle english and english mythology. I think that song is more difficult to understand for those of us who don't have english as our native language. Anyways, maybe it's hard to understand for the natives. Freddie was really clever and mystic in the first four albums. When you take songs like MOTBQ, Great King Rat, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad the swine, Jesus, Ogre Battle, you're talking about a guy whose very cultivated. |

Theres a good youtube video with the lyrics and the painting. It zooms in to show the characters as they're mentioned. This is my favorite song ever. Song structure unmatched amazingly youthful vocal performance with the classic "cool whip" tone Freddie had on those early records (I'm trying to coin a new phrase to describe Freddie's voice back then, you know like Van Halen's guitar has the brown sound I'm thinking cream or just calling it cool whip). It's the best Queen song. |
Rien 10.06.2007 03:46 |
A long time ago I searched the internet for info about this painting. Then with the words of the song I studied the figures on the painting and placed the correct names on it. You can find this on my site, under the Back Chat menu item (The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke). btw the apothecary man is the painter's father. |

What is remarkable as well, in my opinion, is that Freddie actually managed to mix up so many classical influences into his songs; 'The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke' is probably the only song I heard in my life in which there is a real synthesis between rock and rococo (maybe we can name it "rockoco" :) ) music. |
