a friend of mine is doing some thesis or another on different perspectives of modern films and has chosen star wars as their subject.
now to me star wars was just a fantasy movie with wizards and where good overcomes evil and harmless fun,but after watching the film with my friend over the weekend i see it in a totally different light and heres why, imagine this if you will and bear with me on this...
the emperor is george w bush
darth vader is tony blair
the stormtroopers are the us/british armies
luke skywalker is osama bin laden leading a band of rebels against a corrupt empire.the empereor wants total control and tries to do this with a tyranical imperialism and tries to hunt luke down.
the death star is the world trade centre.
i know star wars was made 20 odd years before 9/11 but the entire film is seen in a different light when viewed this way.as my friend said to me while watching the film ''one persons terrorist is another mans freedom fighter''.
i wont be able to watch the films the same way again.
what are your opinions on this?
and what other films can be viewed in a different perspective with the same effect?
You mean we had the power to destroy an entire planet right in New York City and we never used it!?
I can definitely see the analogy, but the major difference is that the Rebel Alliance targeted military installations rather than civilian buildings. Perhaps if we saw Luke Skywalker planning suicide bombings, and if the Empire were not so blatantly evil, we might have a different perspective on the film.
Terrorists ARE freedom fighters...but they are also terrorists. If only they saw Star Wars...
If Luke Skywalker was a member of Al Qaeda, then he would have led a suicide attack by crashing against the main reactor of the Death Star.
DEATH TO THE EMPIRE! THE FORCE IS GREAT!
