Try 'Yes' - but naturally, if you like prog rock, i.e. complicated song structures and harmonies. If you rather like jazzy Rock-tunes, I would suggest you 'Return To Forever'. If you are tired of any popular music at the moment, just listen to Johann Sebastian Bach played by Glenn Gould:) |

You can do better than Chick Corea effortlessly! If you must listen to fusion, take Steely Dan, Weather Report (recommended!!) or Mahavishnu Orchestra. Hell, take Herbie Hancock if you please, but do what you can to avoid Chick Corea!!! Even the extremely open-minded "Pocket Guide To Jazz" slams him. I'd much rather listen No Doubt than Dylan. At least they have good music. Some silly lyrics but that can be easily ignored. Personally the reason why we listen to No Doubt is for sheer fun, and not to receive a socio-political lecture. If we wanted that, then we'd find something to read. |
Raf 01.02.2007 09:15 |
Dylan's lyrics are awesome, but his singing skills suck hairy balls. When I hear him singing some songs that other artists have already covered, his version sounds like a parody or something. For his own work's sake, he should offer his lyrics, or maybe even sell them to other artists, because he ruins his own songs by singing them. And can't he use the harmonica a bit less? When Jimi Hendrix played the guitar instead of harmonica on All Along The Watchtower, he definitely convinced me that Bob Dylan's obsession for harmonicas suck almost as much as his voice. That's just my opinion, though. |

So what if we enjoy pop oriented music instead of a whinny dude with a lame harmonica? The only thing to like about Dylan were just the lyrics, and we know that's the main reason why the lefties from the hippie music press like Rolling Stone magazine always put Dylan way above people who have far more talent than him. I have to admit that as a solo artist Gwen Stefani proved to be a nearly complete disaster because most of her songs were as disposable as toilet paper. No Doubt on the other hand combines ska, reggae, pop, alternative, and punk. 'Tragic Kingdom' sounds as fresh today as it was 10 years ago. |

Hell, take Herbie Hancock if you please, but do what you can to avoid Chick Corea!!! Even the extremely open-minded "Pocket Guide To Jazz" slams him. In fact, he's the only one out of 100+ artists to get slammed there. Miles Davis didn't kick him out of the quintet for nothing, you know! The bands he usus are messy at the best of times. Compare one of his own bands with, for instance the Miles Davis Quintet he was in (not one of Miles' best ones by a long run, too), and you find that far more mistakes are made by the musicians. In addition, he has let go of all the jazz he learned to play, and decided to stop playing the *best* he can, in favour of playing the *easiest he can sell*. Take his Return To Forever-work and put it side by side with his early recordings. You will find that everything he does with RTF is stuff he has done before. Another bit of criticism put forward by countless critics over the years is the lack of energy and feeling put into the electric bands. Songs drag on, because they are played in an uninterested fashion by musicians who don't like what they are playing (but Chick knows what he wants...sadly, he can't find *anyone* who wants that too (unsurprisingly)...just guys who want to get paid). Finally, and this is my foremost criticism: he has abandoned any kind of experimentation. If you can find something that sounds improvised in the first place, you will find that it sounds *exactly* the same in every live-rendition around, which brings me to the phrasing of my main criticism: He is trying to play jazz like a classical musician. If an ace like Stravinsky ('Ragtime', 1921) couldn't do it, a mediocre pianist (which Chick, in a purely technical view, definitely is) cannot possibly do anything refreshing with that. |

As would pretty much anyone who is an active musician or schooled in musical theory. Like it all you wish, but don't you dare claim it's better than Dylan; it's not. Oh, and find yourself "When The Ship" comes in, and just listen to the GUITAR. Ignore the vocals for all I care. Or do the same with "Boots Of Spanish Leather". Back to the original topic, I would strongly suggest Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye if you're into old school R&B. If you're looking for something alternative, then I think a good choice would be Radiohead from 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer'. Their later stuff is somewhat good, but too experimental for my taste. |

The Beach Boys did a cover of "The Times They Are A-Changin'", which is a Bob Dylan song. It is featured on their Beach Boys' Party!-album. Al Jardine sings this song, he loved Dylan, because he was always a "folkie" at heart. (Yes, I'm a fan of The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, shoot me!) |

<font color=#CC66CC>Marial-B wrote: If you want hippy music: The Mamas & The Papas xDNot hippie-music. Music for the people 'Day Tripper' was about (i.e. 'weekend hippies'). You want *real* hippie music? Canned Heat, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Incredible String Band, Ian Matthews & Matthews Southern Comfort, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Who, Patti Smith (although she's a little on the late side, she just managed to fit in), Jefferson Airplane (NOT Starship), Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, etc. |

Rather than start a new thread, I'll state a question here: which Beatles would anyone "in the know" recommend I get next, and why? I already own Abbey Road, The White Album, Revolver, and Rubber Soul (plus the red and blue compliation albums). |

Toooooo right, too right. There's plenty of great songs on the earlier Beatle albums. Just that Rubber Soul onward has a larger reputation. Plenty of Oasis too. |
