I remember reading through debates on what should be the next Queen concert release and the possibility of releasing a Led Zeppelin-style set for Queen was mentioned several times. Having since bought said set I agree that this is a ploy QP should definitley consider.
My question to you is this: If such a set based on Queen was to be released
1. What shows would you like to see on it?
2. What songs from each show should be included?
This was first mentioned in relation to a proposed 'Live Killers' -DVD set.
Because there is so much from this tour in the vaults and most of it is in great quality and fine performances.
My idea on this:
Disc 1; main film: Hammersmith Odeon 1979
(As the FULL show is in the vaults in full glory, it is a 'known' show and thus marketable and best of all it is one of the best shows Queen ever did.)
Disc 2; main film: Paris 1979
(As all three shows are in the vaults with one being near complete)
Extra's on disc 1 and disc 2:
Tokyo plus interviews (40 min)
Saarbrucken snippet (2 min)
Madrid plus interviews (30 min)
Munchen plus interviews/soundcheck (30 min)
Brussels plus soundcheck/interviews (30 min)
Rotterdam plus soundcheck/interviews (15 min)
---maybe even the amateur film if Queen Prodcuctions find a decent quality version
Bristol CLTCL from soundcheck (4 min)
--maybe Buffalo (5 min)
What songs should be included?
Everything that is available!!!!!

I've been in contact with QP about this; they have full video, but no workable audio. Multitrack recordings were 'lost' (read: stolen), and need to be recovered first. So, if anyone has them, QP will buy them, as they too would like to see this concert released, as it is the most promising one sales-wise.
Well, the good thing is this:
I got a written statement that they would immediately start working on releasing the DVD if someone got them the multitrack audio.
That is good news, although it doesn't oblige them to do so.
Going back to the original, the spectre of Rare Live hovers over any live compilation that QP consider. Personally I thought the MK one was really well done in that we got a full show and then snippets of other shows on the other disc. Ideally it would have been all available footage, but that is, alas, probably not realistic.
So, the ideal release for me would be
"A 70s concert" on one disc. I wouldn't even particularly worry about surround sound - if the audience mics can be chucked to the rear that'll do.
Second disc - as many other songs as possible, on the basis that we're clearly only going to get one 70s DVD.
For example - Hammersmith 79 +
GOFLB (Houston)
Millionaire Waltz (Houston)
Stone Cold Crazy (Houston)
Ogre Battle (Earl's Court)
White Queen (Earl's Court)
Doing Alright (Earl's Court)
Flick Of The Wrist (Hyde Park)
Sweet Lady (Hyde Park)
Keep Yourself Alive (Hyde Park)
Liar (Hammersmith 75)
In The Lap Of The Gods (Hammersmith 75)
Big Spender - Jailhouse Rock (Hammersmith 75)
Or, if Earl's Court is the main one, replace the three tracks with 3 from Hammy 79, etc etc.
I really hope they rediscover that multi-track audio. Such a great show, such a great setlist. Everything is perfect about that show, except the audio, damned.
To the one who stole it: sell it to Queen productions and thousands of fans will be happy:-)
So little reaction...
Like I said:hopefully the audio from hammy returns to queenproductions. They were totally on fire and a dvd with that show and extra's from '79 would be awesome. Does Queen Productions know when the tapes disappeared?
Not as far as I know. All they told me was that when they started looking into Hammersmith '79, as it was considered as a release immediately after Wembley, they found ace video, and only ordinary stereo audio-reels, which weren't even in perfect shape.
Fugger....
You just know it'll be a cold day in hell before the proper recordings are returned. The thief probably only has them because they look pretty.
I've considered 'lost' as a real option, but 'we have it and don't want to discuss it' would seem rather odd considering the amount of desperation in the e-mail, when they *implied* they would really like to get it back.
You'd think that with all the remastering techniques we have today they could do a nice job on those stereo reels. I mean look at some DVD releases of old movies that come with 5.1 surround audio. Surely there must be a way of working without the multi-tracks? I'm not saying it will be easy nor cheap but I think it may be possible.
Hmmm... but motion pictures mightn't be the best example. There's not always just one archive to go by.
And also, a lot of the time filmmaking types just redo things for re-releases. Looking at Lawrence of Arabia, just as an example.... a lot of that was redubbed. If not all of it? I don't recall.
Not that this is an option for Hammersmith. We can't just get Freddie into a studio now to redo certain bits, can we? :(
Anyone seen the new US KISSology 2DVD-set?
Five (FIVE!) near full concerts plus all kinds of tv performances and such. This is all from a four year span of their career. (hence it is called 'volume 1', the next years in their career will probably follow in later sets...)
Another FINE example of what Queen could do.
On a little detail: none of the concerts are in SUPERB quality (though great enough) and NONE of them are in REAL multi-channel audio. There all stereo or upmixed stereo.
The kind of thing could be done with Hammy.
(But I assume QPL want to wait at least some more years, hoping to find decent audio for that show.)
Nevertheless...
If KISS can do it...?
(And I hate to think that Kiss-fans and collectors have lower quality-standards for their liking!)
GREGORY?!
I've mentioned both idea's (Zepp-like and Kiss-like boxes) to Greg several times, just to hear his idea's on it. Unfortuntaly I never had any response...
