There is no question in my mind that one of the greatest albums of all time by one of the greatest bands of all time was ignored on this list--and I'm actually not referring to Pink Floyd! Queen's seminal album, A Night at the Opera, stretched across all genres of music and created a generation's worth of musicians with its complex melodies, deep lyrics, and grand styling. "Death on Two Legs" was one of the earliest heavy-metal tracks, and it's been cited by performers such as Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose as one of their inspirations. Brian May's "39" takes the album for an unexpected left turn into folk territory, yet when you listen to the lyrics, it manages to turn Einstein's theory of relativity into a touching, emotional story! "The Prophet's Song" shows off Freddie Mercury's full vocal range in a way that no track before or after would. "Love of My Life" sounded like it had no business being on a rock album, yet the song is so emotionally powerful that it became a live standard for Queen--and a wedding reception staple to this day. You have not heard a national anthem until you've heard Brian May's arrangement of "God Save the Queen," which is at least on a level with Jimi Hendrix's performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner". And, oh yeah, there's a little song on there called "Bohemian Rhapsody"--perhaps you've heard of it? That's not even half of the songs on this true staple of modern music. To attempt to write the history of music without including "A Night at the Opera" would be like trying to write the history of literature without including Jonathan Swift. Swift was often whimsical, but he created the modern art of satire. Queen, too, were often whimsical, but without their efforts, who would modern musicians have had to look up to?
After reading the TIME article, I have noticed a lot of critically acclaimed albums were left out, simply due to the fact that it covers all eras(Starting from the 50s and so forth). Simply put in my opinion, its a fair and very balanced list. ANATO is certinately a good album, but when its up against other albums from the 70s(Rise and Fall Of Ziggy,Exile On Main St,Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,Who's Next, What's Going on etc etc) it falls short(in my opinion atleast, being someone who owns all these albums and enjoys them completely). Great write up though.
Edit: Oops forgot to mention, I also feel that a lot of great/amazing albums were left out. But despite that, way to go TIME foe covering a bunch of eras instead of sticking to the 60s/70s(Which all my fave albums are from ironically :D)

I don't know about that. Well.look at this for example. Bobby Dylan was on there in the 60s and 90s, but they skipped some of his best albums like Blood On The Tracks and Desire. I suppose it was all due to limitation, I mean lets be honest here.Lets take an album from the "70s" portion...I think Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" deserved to be on the list more so then "A Night At The Opera"(I think anyone who knows both albums knows why, WGO has had a MUCH larger influence if thats what some people believe made the list, but overall its just a more heartfilled, poetically beautiful, complete album..in my opinion).

True, i suppose it would be good to see where they got there sources from for this.

this is reminding me...
there was an issue of this guitar magazine (i wanna say GuitarOne, but i could be mistaken) with the top 50 Greatest Guitarists, and Brian May wasn't in it. i was furious and sent them a letter but i havent seen a response. that was back in august...
then when The Rolling Stone magazine had something like it's thousandth (however its spelled) issue or millionth issue or whatever, they had a collage on the cover of all these famous people, and Freddie was in there, but he was almost in the back, off to the right. i had to use the cheat finder page in the magazine to find him...
it looks like Queen's not really getting that much attention anymore. back last summer, Wal-Mart was selling all these band shirts for Kiss, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Blondie., The Beatles...and i think a few others, but no Queen. just recently Target has been selling Queen shirts, but only ONE Queen shirt. wal mart had 2 or 3 different types of shirts for each band at the least.
its really distressing to me, personally, that this kind of stuff happens... :/

How could they leave out ANATO! That's outrageous! Let me guess...Zeppelin 4 was on there. That album is so overplayed and mediocre compared to ANATO or Physical Graffitti! VH1Classic is showing a special on ANATO on the 21st at 8:00...classic albums...It's one of the greatest albums every...besides Queen II
I hate to go against Queen on this, but there are far better albums out there. Yes, ANATO was made quickly and cheap and it does have good songs on it, but there are better albums out there and any huge music fan can clearly see that.
