Japan 85 - is it released officially on dvd??
I've seen some claim it's been released officially, but there are lots of good quality bootlegs out there
is it released officialy - and if so, where can you buy it?
It's official. Though not released by Queen or EMI themselves, kind of like the 'We Will Rock You' DVD, this other company has the rights to it, at least for Japan. link
It's decent quality, single layer, PCM, no extras, ugly menu that's only for track selection. Beware it is aggressively region-coded '2' (Europe and Japan) and NTSC.
Here's another link: link
Or you can find it in the hypocrites club.. er, "Queen Hub" which is strongly linked to Queenzone. Just look for the sticky topics for instructions on how to join and start trading official material such as this.
A great buy for all you Spike Edney fans out there!! (if any) :O.
The keyboards are SO LOUD in the mix that it is almost unbearable. When I listened to the first bars the band play right before the Tear it up riff I knew this was going to be hard (to stand). Brian is buried very deep in the mix. Yet you can truly appreciate Spike's contribution to songs like "Now I'm here" and "Tie your mother down".
I think this tour had a very atractive setlist, with all the early Queen tracks such as Liar (shortened, which I kinda like), Stone cold crazy and even Great king rat. The bootlegs of shows like Milan 1984 sound very good. Freddie had problems with his voice in many shows.
I wish there was one truly good officially released recording (especially a video) from this tour. The stage lighting is great aswell. Not too keen on the band's outfits, but it must have been a great show to be there.

Can't they re-balance the tracks because I agree, the sound was really atrocious. Fred's vocals are dreadful as well.
I still can't believe they let Spike do the big A and B chords at the beginning of Now I'm Here with the pitch bender. There aren't words in the English language to describe how terrible that sounds. The less of Spike in the mix at this point, the better. The Budapest 86 people knew what they were doing.
I shit on the face of Spike Edney...
He ruined quite a number of shows.
And come on! I mean; he's a fucking KEYBOARDPLAYER...
How pathetic is that!
Can't the guy just learn how to play the fucking PIANO???
Become a REAL musician...
(He already acts like one... Mr Casio thinks he's Mr Steinway...)
There are not many people here who dislikes the 84/85 tours like I do. The sound, keyboards, drums.. well, in general, AWFUL.
BUT, to blame Spike Edney! WAKE the f... UP! Not only Spike Edney is a fantastic musician, both as keyboard player and piano player, but he also provided the role as musical director for the Roger and Brian's bands, Q+PR and everything Brian+Roger did as Queen in the 90's and beyond.
Furthermore, in Queen (the proper band), Spike was an employee. He's not to blame if we heard that dreadful synth in Now I'm Here. If it's there, blame Queen, their sound tecnicians and the damned 80's!

Yes the Magic tour sound was very good actually. I like Mr Edney, he knew his brief and was very professional but that pitch bedner sound is gruesome- it's better at Wembley. I think they should ahve used his guitar playing more to beef up the songs a bit- imagine One vision or TYMD with two guitars.
