Mary J. Blige actually did sample Benny and the Jets for one of her songs back in 2000? |

C'mon Burak Mary J Bligue covering 'One' wasn't that bad. It just made the song sound more soulful, that's all. At least it wasn't nearly as bad as U2 turning into a techno and electronica band in the 90s. I'd rather listen to Mary J Bligue singing 'One' a million times than listening 'Numb' again. |

I happen to really like Elton John, but I absolutely hate rap and hip hop!! I won't even dignify them with the title of "music", because they aren't. As interesting as this could be, I'm really don't understand why he's doing this. Why is he selling out? He's better than that! |
user name 29.08.2006 15:19 |
It's not really selling out when you're as wealthy as Elton John is. Elton just seems like a really open and inquisitive sort of fellow, and it seems like he has a genuine interest in doing it. That is by no means "selling out," which is a term that is very abused and incorrectly attributed nowadays. However, I will agree that I truly abhor hip hop. |

An upper middle aged, white British gay guy is not going to succeed doing hip hop....it's hard enough for white guys of our age bracket to do it. I think a lot of people get the wrong idea, Elton doesn't want to RAP himself, but merely collaborate with hot hip-hop producers/artists to create something new and maybe utilize his already existing back-catalogue (that's what I think he ment) He mentioned on the BBC news article that he wanted to do something similar to Blackstreet's "No Diggity" which was produced by Dr. Dre, that song isn't "rapping"... |

Lester Burnham 30.08.2006 14:02 |
I don't think it's selling out if he really wants to do it. It's not like he really needs the money nor does he need the notoriety - I get the feeling that he really enjoys the music and wants to try his hand at it. His comments about what R&B artists he's listening to don't seem all that insincere, and it's not like R&B is the latest flash-in-the-pan trend that he's jumping on to create a #1 album. Of course, I haven't really followed Elton's career (though I do have the essentials, and I'm interested in his new album), but if Bowie can reinvent himself every few years and be hailed as a musical genius, then I'm sure Elton can do something equally as interesting. He acknowledges anyway that it could either be good or it could be a disaster, but as long as he's trying it... edit: of course, Music Man had pretty much summed up what I said - I had misread his comment, so... yeah. Besides, pma mentioned that Elton's not going to rap, he just wants to work with producers to create something new. |

Elton will definitely lose his title as Captain Fantastic by going ahead with this. It will be a complete disaster but he said himself you don't know until you try so good luck to him but in time he will regret doing this |

I just hope that he doesn't alienate a lot of his fanbase. Not because of money or success; but his true fans will stick with him on this, if he does it. I'm just curious as to what this will turn out to be. Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Make whatever makes you happy, art wise. But let's face reality....he's used to getting critical acclaim and financial gain from his stuff. If he does this and it bombs, he may not be strong enough to handle the criticism that comes from it. I hope he is, but I don't want this to ruin him psychologically. He's got a lot left to give to us, I think. I just don't want to see him do this, have it go badly and then give up on everything because of it. We would be missing out on many things if that were to happen. It may not...and I hope it does not.CMU HistoryGirl wrote:Wouldn't what you're describing - that is, performing for the sole purpose of success, a large fanbase, and monetary gain - be a more apt description of "selling-out," though?
