Yes, the late Frank Kelly Freas... one of my favorites. I think it was Roger who had seen the original illustration and wanted to use it for the album cover. I'm probably wrong though, lol.
Roger originally saw the cover on a sci fi magazine called Astounding Science Fiction. I think it was the October issue from 1953. They contacted Frank Kelly Freas who was living in Virgina at the time to re-make the cover but holding the members of the band. The band even met him in November of 77 when they played in Norfolk Virginia. He was doing an expo displaying his work and promoting his book. I made contact with his wife and became friendly with her several years ago via e-mail. Laura is also an artist and seh and Kelly were then living in California where they sometime would travel to science fiction conventions. I was lucky enough to have her get him to autograph a copy of ASF for me when I won an original copy from ebay. I sent it to California and it came back about a week later. GREAT treasure of mine!!! Sadly he passed away in January of last year. I've lost contact with Laura but I still have the e-mails we shared. She was very sweet towards me.
my uncle owns (and has shown me) an edition of the original 50s American sci-fi magazine that inspired the NOTW cover. its all im hoping to inherit, not being cynical in any shape or form.
