How do I convert a .DAT file to burn onto a VCD or DVD using SOnic Digital Media? It won't recognize the DAT file and I can't figure out how to convert it to something that it will. I have tried renaming it but I can't. Any help would be much appreciated!
My dvd burning software isn't recognizing it. So what software do I need to get in order to change the file from a .dat to .mpg or something? Nero can play it, but not my dvd player.
I don't understand why you're unable to rename it. Does it say it's in use by another program? If so, reboot and try to rename it again.. to .mpg
But as the_hero said, you don't need to convert at all.. .dat is just an extension given to files by some programs.. for unknown reasons, but they generally always will become whatever they truly are when renamed to the proper extension.
I think it's the inability to alter the file which is the problem.. not a matter of conversion.
Edit: I noticed you mentioned VCD. Am I correct in thinking this might be one of those AVSEQ001.DAT type of files? If so, then you should easily be able to rename.. the most it might bug you about is saying it's read-only and asking confirmation first.. or if that somehow blocks you, right-click the file first and select 'properties' and uncheck the box for read-only. (If it'll let you) LOL
Yes it is the AVSEQ001.DAT that you said. I try and rename it but I can't rename change the file extension. It still keeps the .dat up there. It doesn't say anything about read only.
I'll try again burning the .dat file on a cd-r, but whenever I drag the file over to the window to burn, the software doesn't recognize it.
