Forgive me if this is old news, but I heard that Brian May was writing a thesis for his astronomy doctorate that he left unfinished. And thank god.
When I heard that Brian May's doctorate was an "honorary" (a.k.a. bullshit) one, I was kind of perturbed, as it detracts from the fact that he was a partial thesis away from a real doctorate in astronomy.
Discuss.
Although it is certainly lovely he was recognized for his “life-long contribution to music” with an honorary doctorate, I am thrilled Brian has decided to finish up his thesis in the field of astronomy and get the Ph.D degree he really deserves. (Seems he came so close!) It’s difficult to conceive the thought of the world of rock without Brian May as guitarist for Queen, but I wonder what it would have been like if he had pursued academia as his main goal and music only as an amateur. I can imagine, with Dr. May as professor, astronomy would have suddenly become quite popular (especially with the female students). ;o) Seriously, he probably would have made a wonderful instructor; articulate and patient, with great empathy and concern for his students.
He says it may take him a couple of years to accomplish this, but I believe he will do it. It amazes me how he manages to accomplish so much with the multitude of interests and hobbies he has. I wonder when he ever sleeps? I wish him much success in this endeavor!! Good for him!!
