I came across a TV interview of Brian after picking up an honoree degree (Doctor of Science by the University of Hertfordshire): Brian makes then the following statement regarding "creating stars through TV programs" (Pop Idol, American Idol etc) Brian's response: "Some of these kids are great, there's great talent that goes into these, eh .. programs. But the way they're treated and the way the whole thing unfolds, I think eh, you have to say it is very unhealthy for the music business. Because there are so many people out there writing and working a way at their craft, and ehm they are the real hopes of the future, but they're completely swamped by all the tv hoo-haa that goes into this stuff" I just wondered why Brian then decided to join the "tv hoo-haa" , while he makes a statement that kind of tells us that is totally not in favour of creating stars through these type of TV programs ... What do you guys think? |

What he says there is right. Personally I don't care that he later chose to involve Idol in the Queen thing. Idol gets a big audience, I suppose it was handy milking it for what it was worth and getting all those retarded viewers to soak up some Queen. |

And then there was that "Stone Cold Classics" tie-in, as well. |

Like Serry said: business. I dislike cheese, but when someone would pay me a thousand pop to eat a slice of cheese and smile into a camera I would happily do so. Morals are for the dimwitted. |

well let's call our good old Bri a hypocrit shall we? ;-) Stefan PS take my comment with a pince of salt , as Brian probably likes it as well on his french fries! |

Brian has publically stated that he did indeed struggle with the decision, and I think he took the view that if he/they were involved with it they could at least control it to a degree. It would have probably happened anyway. The decision to do it was not the bands or QP's. Besides it's not like he has suddenly become an advocate of violence to animals or something, they were just offered the option of taking part and they accepted hoping to make it entertaining and more realistic. Plus I suspect the pressure was on big time from the managment to do it to promote the US tour. Don't forget once you get to Queen's size it's about more than just feeding yourself, you have a company to manage and feed, as someone said just business. |
Boy Thomas Raker 20.06.2006 12:16 |
The decision wasn't Brian's or QP's? Please, Hollywood Records does nothing for Queen, seldom has. Then they get on the phone and say "we're putting a crap collection together, and you have to appear on AI to plug it", and Jim Beach and Brian and Roger drop everything? No, they probably figured that it'd be good for business to introduce Queen to a younger audience. Everything Brian, Roger and Jim decide is based on maximizing revenue, reputation or quality be damned. Further, for them to appear and not play was a boneheaded decision. I'd bet 90% of the AI demographic could't tell if Brian and Roger were musicians or some old guys from an antiques show. If you're there to sell the music, a good starting point would have been to play the music, as Prince, Kenny Rogers, Elton John and Rod Stewart did. |
Togg 20.06.2006 12:29 |
The decision to produce AI was not QP's or the bands it was the company behind the programme. Sure they make decisions based on revenue, they are a business you know, as for quality, well I guess if your one of those that hate everything post 91 then your not going to be satisfied. |

I understand Togg, ... I am also owning my own business and of course we all want to make money ... I was just wondering why Brian made the first comment (having enough money anyway) and still persued to do the "American Idol" show ... Business might be business, but I was just curious why (apart from the money he has plenty) Brian would contradict himself and support these type of shows... Anyway , it's just a minor little question I put on here... I was only wondering ;-) Stefan |

I think Brian is basically very keen to see new talent emerge, he seems to have become more interested in that since WWRY. Therefore it is no surprise to me that he might try to do a 'proper' version of the talent show thing. |

Yeah, Brian seems very supportive of new talent. Well - maybe it was something as simple as he just changed his mind. (Is he allowed to do that?) ;) |
Oberon 21.06.2006 16:34 |
Well, Brian has in the past seemed to contradict himself in his views and actions. Can't think of other examples, but I have a vague feeling that there are some. BUT, Queen played South Africa during the apartheid era etc, but I'm sure they didn't agree with the regime. Also remember that Bruce Gowers directs AI, so there's a link there. Also, as mentioned, it would have happended anyway (probably) even if they weren't involved, and Brian is a bit of a control freak , so he probably figured it was better to be involved than not. At the end of all that, cut him some slack. Even if he still doesn't completely agree with these shows, does that mean he can't have ANYTHING to do with them? Brian (and Roger) has made his views on the media well known, but that doesn't stop QP using the media when they want to promote tours etc. Necessary evil? That's life really - can't get away from it |

OMG BRIAN MAY IS SUCH A FUCKING DUMB ASS FOR TOTALLY CONTRADICTING HIMSELF! I HATE HIM. *Note- the above statement was sarcasm. point being who gives a shit? |
April Lady05 25.06.2006 10:18 |
He said he appreciated new-born talents. He criticised the way of choosing these talents only. The concept of American Idol, which was exported to several countries in Europe as well, I mean its showing some similarities to "Globalsoft Company". Is it a problem he took part in the show? Don't you care why he attended it? I think he only wanted to support some new talents, promises for the future. Their values can't depend on these stupid kinds of shows! ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo". Then they proved how great composers, musicians and singers were! |

This is an outrage. Brian must die. |
TRS-Romania 26.06.2006 14:32 |
well don't say that!!! I don't want to serve him the Belgian fries with a pinch of salt as a last meal ;-) ... Would you? (sorry, bad joke!) I was just thinking ... (without joking!) Brian and Roger are both getting older by the year obviously ... but I don't want to even think about the day that they won't be around ... someday in the next 10 or 15 years (I do not hope so) Paul McCartney will probably die, as well as Ringo Starr , as well as Mick Jagger or Charlie Watts , or Keith Richards... or Jimmy Page, Joe Perry , or any good Rock & Roll hero from the last decades... We Queenfans, will still be around, but there comes a sad day that they (Brian, Roger , John) won't be around, and I don't want to think about it too much ... Damn, I sound depressing... Stefan |

Interesting views...The appearance on American Idol was basically to get some exposure in the states during the tour (ie this is a proper group)and obviously Brian should know a thing or two about the industry Queen had to make it through hard work and toil!I think that mainly he didn't like the edit of the show which started off the comments. There was a bit of ignorance towards Queen in the U.s mainly because they hadn't toured there since 82.On the subject of Idol,I saw the attempt at Innuendo and saw how misunderstood they can be-Generally it was ok and the songs were not completely murdered-You can't expect them to sing like Freddie can you? Cheers and take care JB |
