I think this has been a topic many times before... i´d like to share my theory, and here yours though... I think he got aids, just before the magic tour. Its known as their best tour ever, and the more personal agony Freddie was in the better he performed... that must have had an effect on the bad as well. knowing that you have aids, must be quite painfull by the way. some smart heads also says, that they think he had it in 5 years or so, and that fits quite well with the magic tour. What do you think? |
blerp 22.04.2006 20:42 |
Yes, it's '86, I believe...Towards the end of that year. In a magazine I have, it says he became infected in '87, around Easter as well...But on here people have said otherwise. |

I thought the general opinion was that he got infected in the mid to late 70's, and got tested in 85 or 86. Oh crap, I'm confused now. lol. Guess it doesn't really matter though does it? |
Scott_Mercury 23.04.2006 00:47 |
Big difference between Aids and Hiv. Jim Hutton has HIV, but it has not advanced to Aids... This is why his health is no different in 2006, then it was in 1991 (last I am told anyway) Anyway, Freddie's HIV infection started showing full blown AIDS symptoms around Easter of 1987. Peter Freestone claims it was at this time Freddie got tested, and the first test came back negative, then tested again for accuracy, and it was positive...as in HIV positive. Mary Austin says that Freddie knew in 1984 that he was HIV positive. Peter Freestone says it was 1987. Brian and Roger says that Freddie made references during the whole magic tour whenever they would have a disagreement that "let's not argue, there will be a time in the future when there won't be a Queen.... or, I won't be around forever to do this"...and things to that nature. My personal opinion, and this is based 100% on body language and overall appearance... I feel that Freddie DID NOT know he was HIV positive the day of Live Aid in 1985. But I feel he DID KNOW during the magic tour that he was HIV positive.... Even if he didn't "know" 100%...I think he knew if you catch what I am saying. |
luthorn 23.04.2006 01:57 |
I heard in some interview with one of the people close to Freddie, that he was very obsessed and scared of contracting HIV and that he would get tested quite often. I don't think he waited that long, mid eighties to take a test, I am sure he was already being checked out much earlier. I wouldn't be surprised if he knew that there was something wrong with him in 1983. Queen took a year off from touring that year. There were issues within the band, but who knows what was really going on. Perhaps Freddie needed some time to think things through. Then on The Works album, all pictures of him, look very serious as if there was something on his mind. |
TRS-Romania 23.04.2006 02:58 |
"But I feel he DID KNOW during the magic tour that he was HIV positive.... Even if he didn't "know" 100%..." Just a question: in Jim's book it says that Freddie cheated on him before the Time performance ... which means that if he already guessed (or knew) he had Hiv or Aids, why would he jeopardize other people's life? (assuming that Freddie practized unsave sex) ... I think he probably "thought" something was not right, but brushed it off in 1986 ... but perhaps because of his own fears he let himself be tested in 1987 ... Anyway before the magic tour, because of insurance reasons, all band members had to undergo a medical test (as procedure). I am not sure if such an insurance requires an HIV test (I gues not) ... In Jim's book it says that some tissue was removed from his shoulder and they found out Freddie had Hiv(Aids) ... In my opinion docters dont just test that as a routine thing ... Since having an Aids test needs permission from the person himself. So in my assumption, Freddie did contact his GP (Gordon Atkinson) and requested to be tested (which was at the time Jim was in Ireland before or just after Easter 1987) Stefan PS It just does not add up that Freddie would infect people (assuming he had unprotected sex)in 1986 and by that time Jim had not been tested (that was much later). In 1987 they also started to practice save sex (after it was known he had HIV/Aids) |

How to hell could Freddie take his tests in the beginning of 80ties if by that time there was nothing like AIDS/HIV known!! The first case, the first person with full AIDS appeared in 1980 in LA and then in NYC. AIDS was named somewhere in 1983, but still there no-one knew what causes this illness. HIV was discovered as virus in 1986. So this is absolutely impossible to do the tests towards HIV antibodies before this time! Anyway Freddie could get HIV in 70ties in America. I'm pretty sure even he couldn't tell when and from whom he got it. Also he could suspect he is infected before taking tests in 1987. What is a great deal in it? His friends and ex-lovers died or suffered from it, so his suspitions where quite obvious. |

FreMe to answer your Q. It does make a difference to use a condom even if both people are infected, due to HIV strain variety and high mutation rate. Two people could be exchanging different virus classes and mutations making virus that much more aggressive. I can only speculate that Freedie could have had sex with multiple HIV positive individuals making his virus that much more aggressive. |
sandro 23.04.2006 05:22 |
He fisrt got ADIS in the 90-91. if you do not know the difference between HIV/ADIS , then ADIS is the Virus that comes from HIV and you begin to development Cancer and the immune system can´t hold together anymore and so on, and it´s happends over a years periode, so Freddie lives about 4-5 years with HIV, which is the average without medication ( Which didn´t exicst in the late 80 and early 90) |

To answer on question who infected him, I heard they they thought it was some tattoed guy, probably in New York, and it could be around '83. If somebody know when Freddie went to New York, that also might help, thought he probably went a couple of times. Person with Aids can't live more then 10 years, it's the highest time by now. Person with HIV can live long, how far, we don't know now. There are some medicals they must take. Good examples are Magic Johnson and Jim Hutton |

freddie tested just after LIVE AID and that test came back negative and it's true, freddie was obsessed with the illness, but i agree with other user here in the forum, who said freddie was not HIV positive during LIVE AID i think the HIV test was positive in 1987, but freddie had a pre-feeling during the magic tour, he knew that something was wrong with his health in adittion, you can note when freddie knew he was ill, just looking to his face and his smile i mean, until the great pretender, you an see a happy freddie, he smile, he is very happy after that, (since barcelona for example)freddie was a little bit sad i dont know, but freddie wasnt the same person after the great pretender...you can look to his face and you can ralize that he was sad |

Freddie very way could have contracted HIV in 1981??...1978?? ...or earlier?? He was a world traveler after all, and humped men in every corner of the earth. In reality, for Freddie to have died in 1991, more than likely was HIV positive in 1982... I have NEVER heard of any case of the contraction of HIV turning to AIDS, then deadly within 5 years. I would bet big money that Freddie was HIV positive by the time of Live Aid... he just may have not known it. But to have this go to full blown AIDS by 1987 (which it's obvious he is on steroids during the Great Pretender Video.... as a matter of fact, his head looks kind of puffy and swollen at Wembley 1986)....anyway, to have AIDS kick in bad in 1987, he may have HIV for 10 years prior. One thing is for sure, Freddie's body and overall dimeanor are completely different from the July 1985 Live Aid performance to the August 1986 Wembley performance. I still say he knew himself by Wembley '86 that he was HIV positive. Nothing will sway me otherwise. |

Fiennessa 23.04.2006 17:07 |
Oh, c'mon! He stopped taking medications, because it just didn't help him in anything. He couldn't live with his usual life any longer, so there was no sense in keeping it. His life was singing, performing and recording. When he was to weak to do it, he stopped. And still, some don't see any difference between AIDS and HIV. Being only HIV positive and taking some "cocktails for life" people can live till getting very old. But there is no medication for AIDS itself, even today. |

In 87 he found out he had AIDS, not HIV+ but Aids so he couldve have been HIV+ thru the 80's for all we kno but just never knew it cuz it could take years for it show up on a test thats y they say u should be tested yearly if u think ur at risk , plus u can be HIV+ and never have any symptoms. The medications now can keep u from ever gettin AIDS but ull always be HIV+....unfortunatly it was too late for Freddie cuz he already had full blown AIDS when he found out :-( .....altho Jim Hutton is in good health and still with us thanks to those meds. |

It really isn't when (singular) Freddie got AIDS, but how many whens. He looked pretty darn healthy and strong when he and Montserrat did their Barcelona performance. When Queen did the Montreux pop festival (I can't remember for sure what it was called or even where/when it was. Anyway, they were on a small stage, and Freddie wore red and white, and it's where they had to mime.) He had some bruises on his arm as I recall. Since HIV/AIDS information has been around for so long, I SHOULD know this, but I don't. Are there any lab techs out there? When a person is tested for HIV, is the result either postive or negative? Such as, is it either yes or no? If yes, what is yes? Is it blood cells such as white blood cells that are increased or decreased or different than normal? Or does a virus actually show up similar to when a person has a strep throat, and a throat culture shows the streptococcus bacteria? Is it antibodies that show up? WHAT is positive? Is it symptoms alone that make a diagnosis go from calling the condition HIV to AIDS? Or is there some kind of blood test that positively indicates the person has AIDS? If so, what is the blood test, and what is it measuring? Are there different strains and mutations of AIDS? If so, how many have been identified? Are there "grades" of AIDS defining the severity such as how cancers are classified, as in stage I, II, III, and IV - with the highest being the worst? If so, what are they, and would that be determined by biopsy or blood work? And finally, about sterioids. I have a sister with brain tumors who occasionally gets zapped with radiation beams that sizzle the tumors, and they slowly decay, but the treatment can also cause bleeding and swelling in the brain, and thus she is always put on large doses of steroids with each treatment, but the steroid doses are slowly tapered down and finally off over weeks' time. One of the side effects is getting a "moon" face, and I do mean moon. Her face gets as round as a pumpkin or a dinner plate. I always thought this was an irreversible condition, but when she is off steroids, her face goes back to normal. I don't recall ever thinking Freddie's face looked puffy or round. Another side effect of steroids is osteoporosis or "thinning" decalcification of the bones. In the spine the individual vertebrae can "crumble" or partially collapse putting strain on adjacent discs, muscles, nerves, etc. Perhaps this is what Freddie had as either Freestone or Hutton talked about his bones, was it cracking?, that he had in his final hours. AIDS is wicked wicked wicked. |

i thought it was '87.... i remember seeing in an interview somewhere it was around the time he started recording with montserrat for Barcelona. she told in an interview he was distressed one day and she asked what was wrong, he told her (im paraphrasing) "please keep this to yourself, my good friend, i fear im seropositive" or something like that, and he told her to keep it under wraps and to move on with the music. and for the quitting smoking rumors, i think it was from an interview (86 or 87?) where he (again, paraphrasing) was 'too old for that life and he has grown out of it and is currently clean of any of it' after the rumors of him being tested for HIV the first time and it came back negative. |
redspecial85 30.03.2007 13:58 |
Interesting discussion. My theory is that Freddie contracted HIV when he got his apartment in New York and started partying in places like the Continental Baths and lewd places of that sort. If not in NY, then I think he contracted it in Munich. Everyone knows how wild and crazy Germans are. I'd say he got HIV between '78 and '81...and possibly got more than one strand of the virus. I think the whole rumor of him getting tested and being found "negative" the first time is crap. I think it was fabricated to try and keep the press away. |
