Yeah just like some other songs this one hasn't got a great reputation which is sad, cause it's actually a great song! Especially the extended version. Ok so it doesn't feature the Queen sound but I think it's a really great song nonetheless.
Underrated perhaps?
I ABSOLUTLY *LOVE* IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think its amazing, one of Freddie's most magnificant vocals. I was shocked when I heard people say this is one of Queen's worst songs.
One review of the Mr. Bad Guy album stated that "Freddie Mercury has the perfect voice for an exhibitionist: unbridled and unrestrained." That was not a compliment.
The criticism applies well to "One Year of Love." His treatment just does not suit the song. In the '80's, Freddie was all about singing loud ("unrestrained"). He wouldn't ease off, even in most ballads.
That said, "One Year of Love" is a nice little song with a refreshing bit of sax. I would have liked to hear a version with a more emotive vocal though.

I would love to hear a version with Archie Shepp on sax :-P That would give at least 90% of QZ a heart-attack, if they heard it, though.
I once made a version of this that took the One Year of Love vocals and threw it on a pitch-shifted instrumental of I Was Born To Love You. The result? Well it was a great idea, unfortunately the pitch shifting screwed things up a bit.
Point being - this song also definitely would've worked as an I Was Born To Love You clone.
I like One Year of Love, but the sax solo gives me the shits. I avoid Kenny G for a reason.

lmao! good one
I agree, One Year Of Love is a good song, but none of you have said the most important thing: John Deacon wrote it!
That just makes it even better. Sure, it's nothing like his other works (AOBTD, Back Chat, IWTBF, etc.) but it's still a great song nonetheless.
It fit well in Highlander, and helped connect the two lovelorn characters. A fantastic effort.

I think this song requires MANY kudos to our dear Deaky, i dont think he gets enough respect from the world!!!
And this is a beautiful song at that!! so THANK YOU JOHNNY D FOR SUCH A BEAUTY!! And i dont think this song gets enough respect either IMO...
Anywho, thats my two cents for now.

Awww, but that's *exactly* why I love his voice and his singing! :D
Fantastic song. I wish Freddie didn't overdo that bit at "I'm a prisoner of looooooove". But that is just a little scratch to the whole masterpiece.
By the way, there is a huge FM station nationwide in Brazil (called Antena 1) that plays it very often.
Cheers,
