Long story short (well, MAYBE not short but): Me and 3 of my friends were all walking to a bus station terminal in the north end of the city after 8PM together, right? When we got there around 8:20PM, we caught up with another friend of ours, and were walking to the other side of the bus terminal building. When we got to the other side, I heard someone aways behind us shout "Hey!", and I looked and saw a group of 4 people: (I apologize in advance if this sounds a bit racial) one black guy (African-Canadian?) guy, one Arabic guy (I think he was Lebanese), and two white guys. We were thinking "Oh shit, this can't be good." Then they caught up to us and asked us if we had any pot...we said no. They asked us if we had "anything of value"...again we tried to say no, or not really answer them, but then they started getting pushy, and started asking us to empty our pockets. We were like "Look at our clothes, man! Do we look like we have anything?!" The guys again demanded us, now in a threatening tone, to empty our pockets. One of my friends (whose name, nor any of their names, I will not mention for safety/security reasons) thought they just wanted some money, so he asked them if they just wanted some "spare change", albeit in a tone of voice that they (the thugs) misinterpreted as laughing at them. THEN the black guy pushed my friend onto a wet bench and (as I found out later) put a switchblade knife to his stomach and said "Do you think we're fucking JOKING?!" Of course I could see the scared look in my friend's eyes, but I didn't know at the time that it was because of the knife (which I couldn't see because it was dark outside). And then, in an effort to get them to kinda shut up, I took out my wallet from my pants and said "This is all I have...(muttering) nothing of value in here." The Lebanese guy obviously thought I had money that I was not willing to admit to, obviously, 'cos it was true; I was afraid that if I told them I had $5 in my wallet, they would make efforts to forcefully take it and steal it away from me. So at first, I denied having any money, but they kept pushing me (verbally) into admitting it, and you guys here probably know that I'm not a very good liar. So then I admitted that I had $5, and then they were like "Really? Show it to us!" And I said "No, I won't". They demanded, again in a threatening tone and while beginning to advance on me, that I show them the money compartment in my wallet. I said No again, and then they grabbed me when I tried to walk away and forced me down onto the same bench that my other friend was pushed down onto. So this time, the Lebanese guy tried to (as perverted as this may sound) reach into my pocket, and tried to grab my wallet. I pushed his hand away and said "NO! This is MY property, and *I* will decide to show it to you if I want to or not". And then the black guy threatened me now that if I didn't show them the money, he would put a knife to my throat. I didn't take him seriously, and again I said "No~!"....big mistake. Next thing I know, my head is being pushed back and I have something hard and cold pressed to my neck...I was like "Holy Shit!" I had to push away the knife with my right hand, which felt like it was bigger than I believe it turned out to be (take into account I could NOT see the knife at all, so I never actually SAW the weapon, but all my friends did...) I think I was lucky I didn't cut myself, 'cos I was not able to see which part of the knife I was touching. So anyways, while this was happening, I decided to try and grab other people's attention by shouting out as loud as I could: "HEEELLLPPP! HEEEEELLLLPPP!!" So then, either because of that, or because now they saw the friend of mine who had the knife to the stomach was now flagging down a bus driver nearby (who couldn't see t |

I am sitting here now in disbelief, that is so horriable. I'm so glad you got out of this without a scratch. Your very lucky. Your one brave person you know, standing up to them like that. You deserve a medal. |
Sherwood Forest 27.03.2006 19:34 |
god damn your lucky that whole time i was thinking you guys should have started running and then when u turned the corner tripped them and knocked em out. but i hope you learned a lesson, this is why my dad always carries a knife around, always he never leaves without it. And if one time you have to give up the money try and make sure that your money is spread out between ur pockets, with the least in the front and most between the two back ones so if someone comes again u just hand them that. of course that wont work too well if they empty ur pockets but its good advice to take. i hope you never have to go through that again, im sorry. and you weren't being racial by saying someone is black, arab or white so dont think that. and that black guy is such a fucking shit head for ever saying its because im black. god damn and they tell us we're racist, give me a break people are using their color as a reason to get off. |

As well as being scared to go to the north end at night anymore, I'm even more concerned about going to Vancouver now for the Queen + Paul Rodgers concert next month. My stepmom has always been concerned about me going by myself to Vancouver, since she and some others say it's a more dangerous city, than Edmonton is, to be in. And what happened on Saturday has not only her, but some of my own friends and even myself even more concerned about me going to , especially now that I've gone so far in planning and booking the trip, that now I can't cancel it without losing money (having bought the concert ticket from Garden Lodge, and having booked the hostel and also having JUSWT bought the Greyhound bus tickets -incidentally earlier on Saturday-, the latter of which is not in any circumstance refundable since it was a 14-day advance purchase) I will have to now take extra precautions when I'm in Vancouver, as I will not have anyone with me or to bail me out if this happens (again) there. I wish I had friends who I knew personally that were living in Vancouver, because if that was the case, I WOULD have gone to the Toronto concert, if only it weren't for my dad's cousin not returning my call (for whatever unknown reason - maybe it was an outdated phone number?), but that didn't happen (the trip itself). So yeah... |

I felt ill on Sunday, actually, since I did not get much sleep the night before (obviously) ED: Also, I forgot to mention it earlier, but out of me and my 4 friends that were involved in this, I wrote the longest report for the police...5 pages! (And you have to take in mind that, while I took a LOT of effort to remember as much detail as I could, I canNOT stand writing with my left hand (since I'm a leftie), since my hand hurts quite easily from writing, hence I use computers almost ALL the time for writing whatever I need to!) |

Thanks for your comments, guys! At least I feel much better now, since I've gotten it off my chest. I'm also happy to hear that people are glad I'm safe. I'm going to see later on today if this incident was reported in either of the Sun or Journal newspapers on Sunday, so that hopefully I can try and get a photocopy if it was indeed reported. |

Hey, Dark. I'll be in Vancouver too! And, in my trips in Europe I had more than my fair share of... events. (Fought a pickpocket in Rome, thrown into a brick wall in a bar fight, got carried down an entire street by a bunch of drunk Scousers chanting, "Celtics for life" and along with the coolest Canadian ever (And that's saying a lot!) got forcefully thrown out of a Praha bar by fiteen Czech guys. We should meet up, man. I want to meet the legend that is Dark! |
inu-liger 28.03.2006 20:24 |
Hey Brandon! Glad to hear you want to meet up with me! I'd very much like to enjoy a meet-up! I posted a new message in my Vancouver thread in the Tour section of this board, so we should continue that discussion there, eh? :) |
Togg 29.03.2006 10:20 |
Dark, you need to move on from this, learn what you can but don't let it prevent you from going about your daily business. Go to Vancouver and enjoy the concert, certianly it is good to be aware of the dangers out there, BTW Vancouver is a fairly safe city as cities go. Don't stop doing things but keep in mind that you can't trust people to behave in a rational way all the time. I have travelled the world (well a fair few bits anyway) and have been in a few near misses myself, however it always pays to be prepared and I don't mean by carrying a knife or something, I mean keep your eyes open and your ears to the ground so to speak. Enjoy Vancouver |
inu-liger 29.03.2006 12:09 |
I certainly will, Togg. Thanks! |
