you guys are hillarious. PR is definitely not being ruined by Brian and Roger or as I like to call them "half-queen". He is probably making more money from the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour than he's ever made with Free or Bad Company or anyone else. He definitely benefits from the spotlight of the Queen name. On the other hand I don't think he's ruining Brian and Roger although I don't feel his voice suits the Queen catalog with the exception of a couple songs. I'm not one to say that Paul sucks but if you listen to ROTC and his performance of The Show Must Go On and you don't consider sticking a fork in your eye then you're not normal. Anyway, I think he's a good singer, just not suited for Queen. Although he's making a hell of a lot of $ from the Queen spotlight. God I wish Freddie was still here. |

Paul Rodgers may not be the right person to sing Queen songs, but he is at least making an attempt whether it be bad or good! |

But my point was for all of the examples to be refuted... not just a select couple. How about Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett, and later without Roger Waters? My point is: so many bands have lost a key member and continued. It's nothing new. I can't believe all the whining and complaining that has gone on here, all because the founding members of Queen are still using the band name. |
Wiley 05.02.2006 14:18 |
About those cases of bands going on without key members I'm most familiar with the Pink Floyd case. They actually lost TWO key members and kept going and I was always surprised by it. I mean, you could argue that Syd Barret "was" Pink Floyd at the begining as Freddie "was" Queen. Syd was the true superstar, excentric and wrote most of the songs in their first couple of albums. Should they have quit in 1968?? We wouldn't have The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Meddle and other great albums. Now THAT would have been a sin! Many bands do it all over again. I can imagine Van Halen fans being partial to one of their frontmen as, maybe, some James Bond fans being partial to Sean Connery or Roger Moore as being their favorite 007. You can say one is better than the other, but I don't see the point in bitching about something to the level of calling it a blasphemy, which it clearly isn't. I'd say that every band's case is different, but some of them have found (a tremendous amount of)success after losing one or more original members. I'm not very familiar with Van Halen's case but it's sometimes refered as being a good example of bands carrying out without their original members. I heard on a TV show that David Lee Roth was like the original Coke everybody liked; Sammy Haggar was like Pepsi, a little sweeter in taste but good; and that Gary Cherone was like RC Cola, and no-one really got that, hehe :). Another example: I know there was this discontent when the Beatle's original drummer was sacked in favor of Ringo Starr. I can almost imagine all the BPP's of the sixties saying NO PETE NO BEATLES, RIP BEATLES 1962. I know this case is an exaggeration but, well, many other "Queen fundamentalists" are, so sue me. There has to be something a band has to keep in order to make this successful transition. I would like to believe this Queen+PR colaboration is going to last but I know it won't, so I'm enjoying it the best I can. For God's sake... it's Queen! they're back on the road! You can stay at home, listen to your records and live in the past. There's nothing wrong about it. Now, spamming the board, that IS WRONG. The fact that most of the other not so fundamentalistic Queen fans are by far more reasonable persons doesn't mean that you can actually make us change our minds about it. But, then again, I really don't believe this Poodle guy saying Paul Rodgers sucks and prefering Robbie Williams. I like Robbie, I like many of his songs, but I don't think Brian and Roger would've looked good touring with him. Well, this post is endless. I'm sorry I wrote this much but I think it's better to organize your ideas and actually make an argument instead of just spamming this board. The only bad thing that this new tour brought was some of the most annoying spammers this board has ever known, but in the end, there's far more good in this. Queen has always been a controversial band and it's good that they're actually making some buzz once again. Rock on Queen!... :) Wiley |

You're right, it's not Queen. It's Queen+Paul Rodgers. It says so in the publicity and there's nothing you or anyone can do about it. I said that the Beatles' drummer case was an exageration but why don't you consider the case of Pink Floyd? Syd Barret was as important to early Pink Floyd as Freddie was for Queen; also Roger Waters, 15 years later. It would be interesting to see what other band's fans think about those band lineup changes. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You can like or not like this new tour with Paul Rodgers, you can go or not go at all, but I'm sick about reading the same old "this is not Queen" argument. It was briefly mentioned every time Brian and Roger appeared in some TV show or as guests in someone else's concert under the name Queen but it's been discussed to death and it gets really booooring. Now, for a change, someone asks for opinions about other bands' cases and other people say that no other band can compare to Queen. I mean, I know this is a Queen forum, and I'm a loyal fan and collector of the band, but this "RIP QUEEN 1991" thing is very annoying. Let's talk some other band's cases and see the same phenomenon under different eyes, OR let's talk about what Queen or their band members are currently doing. And what they are doing now is this "QUEEN PLUS PAUL RODGERS TOUR", wether we like it or not :). Wiley |

The fact he has stayed silent on this project doesn't come across as a big endorsement does it ?. When you had a unique singer that defines a band anything else further down the line doesn't work. Brian and Roger's motives need to be questioned. Both seemed happy doing solo projects during the last 15 years. Just leave Queen alone. I know this has nothing to do with Queen but it somehow remembered me about some QZoners, hehe :). It's from the mi6.co.uk forum for James Bond 007 fans. This guy is disappointed after seeing two Daniel Craig pictures in the new Bond movie Casino Royale: "I´ve seen the pictures of Craig on the net of him as Bond and all I can say is that I want James Bond 007 not XXX Xander Cage...I have said that I´m willing to give him a chance as Bond but I can´t no longer,No matter how hard I try I just can´t except him as Bond.I´ve removed the Craig in the Tux from my PC which I had as a screensaver to try to get used to the idea of Craig as Bond...It hasn´t worked and the pictures on the Net has proved my first instincts were right...to me,in my opinion he´s not Bond...and never will be in mind or my heart...IMHO James Bond R.I.P...1962-2002 I will leave this forum now and I hope that all of ye Craig supprters will enjoy Casino Royale...." I hope this guy doesn't do something stupid in his deep depression. Still, I just had to love the James Bond RIP 1962-2002 thing, hahaha :). Regarding what Brian, Roger and John said right after Freddie's death, well, someone can change their minds. Brian didn't feel comfortable being Queen in the nineties, now he does. Roger always wanted to tour and now both are having a great time. This supposed "Facts" refer to opinions stated by individuals in a given moment of their lives and they are able to change, as they have done some time ago. I'm just happy about that Strat Pack gig where Brian and Paul hit it off and decided to take it a step further. 30% of the current posters in this board wouldn't be here if it wasn't for this tour, hehe :). I had to highlight this particular point above. You're so right... there's no way to talk to these people. But it's simply called ignorance. They think Queen are the centre of the world, and clearly they have no clue about the history of the Stones, Floyd, Supertramp, The Who, Deep Purple, INXS, AC/DC, or any of the other bands who continued on after losing an important member. They are touring, they are bringing Queen and Paul Rodger's music to an audience, they're making a buzz, they sold out most of their shows so far. I think that it was very risky to book that many shows in the US, some of them very close to the other (and skipping Texas, btw) and maybe not all of them will sell out but the tour is on. Maybe some of their older or more traditional fans do not like the idea of this tour. I think that this group if a minority. I saw lots of middle aged men and women having the time of their lives in the 4 shows I went to in Europe. I have this image of some lady looking at her younger days' heroes and seeming mesmerized by it, and this other lady in her fourties headbanging to Bohemian Rhapsody. There's something really special about these shows. Maybe it doesn't sound exactly the same, but the spirit of the band is there. Freddie is remembered in the show several times and Brian and Roger sing some songs. You say you want Brian and Roger to play but not under the name Queen because it's supposed to be some cardinal sin and they're pissing on their leacy. Well, guess what? they can do whatever they want and their legacy is going nowhere. What's the point on being angry and negative about it? what's the point of spamming a board to repeat the same old "RIP QUEEN 1991" crap all over again? If you want to talk about pre 1991 Queen, you can do so in this same board. You can talk about the music, things you discover in Queen songs, your favorite albums, favorite versions of songs, Queen live, discuss the contents of the future box sets to come, rarities you posess, make contact with fans, talk about Queen conventions, etc. I'm not talking about constructive and comprehensive posts like Mr. John S. Stuart's Ultimate Collection or Sir GH's complete Live Killers analysis but I'm sure you can do better than this "ditch Paul" crappy posts. Actually, I think I can do better than this "negative spammers, make up your mind and get a freaking life" kind of posts. :) See ya, Wiley |

Excellent post, Wiley. Very well said. <applauds> Sadly, you're trying logic on the illogical. I've done it myself a few posts back. It doesn't work. They'll just come back with the same nonsense. Too bad for them. |

Honestly I don't think Freddie cares. If they weren't touring with Paul and someone else you guys would bash that person too. |
