So on Monday, I was bored, so after school I went down to Broadway, taking a poll. I walked around asking people whether they had heard of Brian May. These are the results.
9 "Fuck off, bitch"s
12 weird looks
8 cold shoulders
16 "I don't expecially care. But do you know where [insert location] is?"s
6 "that one guy"s
3 "um...a movie star...?"s
1 "that guy in that fag band"
1 "OH MY GOD I LOVE QUEEN SO MUCH BRIAN MAY IS SO HOT OH MY GOD"
1 "the guitarist in Queen, right?"
.....
Three (if you count the "fag" one) responses.
Is that sad?
I think so.
Reality:
In the US, it has always been about fads. 99 times out of 100, what's popular now will not be popular in a few months, or in better cases, a few years. There have been a few exceptions: Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Johnny Cash, etc.
Queen was big in the USA from 1977 to 1980 - that's 25 years ago. Queen released Hot Space, and later the video for I Want To Break Free... and that was it for them. Most people know Queen for Freddie, they recall that he was gay, and they remember a few songs. Few people remember Brian, Roger or John. Next fad...
There have been hundreds of fads since.
It's unfortunate, but that's how it works. Is it the same in Europe, or do people have slightly better attention spans?

That's right - mention Queen and they think of Freddie. But all they remember about him is that he was gay and died of AIDS. And though they might remember 'We Will Rock You', they don't realize Bohemian Rhapsody is the name of THAT song.

No, like, I agree with that.
I was proving your point.
