This was a phenomenon started by Michael Jackson and his "Thriller" album, where just about every song was released as a single. I think the public got sick of it after a while as every record company jumped on this type of money-making band wagon. This probably affected Queen's subsequent single sales as well, I think.
As for today, I dont think that Queen would hit number one anymore. Not because I think they would be crap, its just that this is simply because there is a large chunk of the record buying public who are brainwashed with the bullshit that is The X Factor / Pop Idol nonsense. Shows like these would have some people believe that Michelle McManus / Shite Ward (or whatever the new "winner" is called) are "talented" based on the fact that they sang a handful of songs in a couple of different styles. All I can say is if they had talent then they would have done the same as Queen did. Namely they would have toured their asses off and learned the trade as Queen did, got noticed by using the same methods. Then these “Karaoke Popstars” could lay claim to being “talented”. All I can say is most of them will end up the same way as Steve Brookstein – remember him? Thought not, so I rest my case.

I think that if Freddie was still alive Queen would be one of those few acts, like U2 or Madonna, whose every new release is long awaited. Queen transformed well into the 80's, and I think they had big chances to do so in the 90's and now. I agree that a lot of their singles charted much too low. There was a few really big disappointments: The Miracle, I'm Going Slightly Mad, The Show Must Go On (unbelievably low; in Poland they started playing it on the radio in the summer and it climbed to no.3, and it was before Freddie's death; after his death most songs went to no.1) and finally You Don't Fool Me (only no.17?!). No justice in this world!
