Wham!
Queen weren't invited to Band Aid as they had ignored the music union's stance on playing in South Africa.
At the time it was against precedence to play there as it was under Apartheid rule...
Interesting then that Queen were invited to play Live Aid a year later, and everyone knows what happened there...
I prefer Do They Know It's Christmas...but only by a hair's breath.
I adore We Are The World too, and even though I can NOT stand Cyndi Lauper, her solo, along with Steve Perry's ( I LOVE Steve Perry) steals the song and gives it the full emotional impact it deserves.
As for Do They Know It's Christmas, I still cry it's so meaningful and beautiful, and I can still recognize every singer singing every lyric and verse, and of course Bono's infamous lyric, ''Well tonight thank God it's them, instead of you''. On that song, Boy George, also not one of my favorite singers, steals the song with his solo too!
do thet know its christmas,
i'm not keen on we are the world, just seems a little too fake, imo, :)

no Queen were not left out cos of the music dispute thing going on, its if you watch the Live Aid interview thing, you will see it was cos each member was in different parts of the world doing different things when the video was made, Brian was in America i think, Freddie was somewehre else etc.
rumour has it, geldof didn't want freddie on the song because his voice would of dominated the song over others..(p.freestone) if ya think about it it would of lol
I've always thought Mercury would have been quite good on the opening lines, the ones meant for Bowie but performed by Paul Young when he couldn't make it.
As for Queen's absence - I've always understood that the real reason was the South Africa thing, and the band's own excuse has always been "oh we were all in different parts of the world darling".
In terms of musical composition, We Are the World os a lot better.
In terms of emotion and getting the message across, Do They Know It's Christmas is a bit better.
Can't say I would have bought either one of them personally. :P

In terms of both, Stars kicks the ass out of both of them.
