Despite the slow responses to the other two album discussions (ADATR and SHA), I've decided to carry on regardless.
As ever, da rulez:
1. If you don't own the album, do not contribute. I want this to be a discussion, and posts by somebody saying only "I like 'Keep Yourself Alive' on Classic Queen, is that on this album?" or something to that nature contributes nothing to the discussion. 2. As most people have been quick to jump down the throats of foreign posters about their English, I can only ask that those not familiar with the language do their best. For those who speak English as their first language, there really is no excuse. Try to formulate your thoughts so that everyone can enjoy them. No speaking in tongues, please. 3. You don't need to like the album - these aren't appreciation threads, these are discussion threads. If you don't like the album, don't be afraid to say so! Everyone should be responsive to constructive criticism, so if the album isn't one of your favorites, explain why in a decent manner instead of just saying, "This album sucks because of X song." 3a. Right, so this album holds a very special place in my heart for me, as it was the first Queen album that I was given. In July 1993, I had just turned ten years old and my mom, sister and I had just moved into a new house. My mom was channeling all of her finances into this new house, so my birthday was very minimal at best, but I did get a cassette player and three new cassettes: Eric Clapton's Unplugged, Happy Birthday Charlie Brown, and News Of The World. Up until this point, I had never been a music freak, and had never really listened to music at all. Sure, I'd had the odd New Kids On The Block tape, as they were hot shit in the late 80s, but little else otherwise. I gave the first two tapes a quick listen, but News Of The World became my absolute favorite, so much so that I wore it out after repeated listens. What makes this album so special? I honestly can't say, as it's nothing like anything else Queen had done at that time. There's no extravangant production, no epic 'Bohemian Rhapsody's, very few Queen-like elements to the whole album, which very well may be why it's so good - because it's different. I won't go into too much detail here until the thread picks up more momentum, but let's hear your thoughts now! |

I like WWRY better than WATC, but I didn't used to. A while ago I didn't count WWRY in my top 30 Queen songs, but now I do. I just thought there were so many Queen songs better than it, at least 30 more. |

I remember in about 1993, I was a new Queen fan, laying in bed scanning the radio and I heard someone talking about Queen. I started taping this program, which was actually a special on News Of The World, with segmented bits of Brian May speaking about the different tracks. i had come in at the point where they played All Dead, All Dead, and got the rest of the album taped from there. I listened to that crappy tape for about a year before I finally broke down and shoplifted the album. |

Hi Lester, I will do my best to contribute meaningfully to this discussion and get the ball rolling so to speak. We Are The Champions (WATC) and We Will Rock You (WWRY) are of course the staples of this album, brilliant stuff. I do think that perhaps WWRY could have been the opening track (much like on Queen Rocks) and WATC the closing track on the album, of course this is not hard to do with programming cd players but it would have been nice to have the album mixed this way (rocking intro of WWRY and the rip roaring finale of WATC like a real Queen concert). I absolutely adore the first "and we'll keep on FIGHTING" done in falsetto. Tis absolutely wonderful to hear. This is all being done from memory whilst at work so forgive me if I don't discuss the songs in exactly the correct order. Sheer Heart Attack. Hmmmm this song is OKAY I suppose, I don't rate it as a bad or a good song, just filler. The style doesn't suit Fred's voice at all. I am aware that this era is the same as the Sex Pistols and is kind of a response to the criticism that 'dinosaur rock' bands such as Led Zep, Queen and Genesis were receiving, i.e. Queen could punk it with the best of them. Overall, not a bad song but I don't wax lyrical about it. All Dead, All Dead? I think this is the next song. I absolutely love the opening piano chords, very jazzy. Brian May is a very underrated pianist. Vocally this song is pretty good, Brian May has a very sweet sounding voice, but you know that he only suits this sort of tune i.e. he could never belt out a tune like Freddie. This song is a stark contrast to Sheer Heart Attack. The Prophets song is next (JUST KIDDING). Ahhh Spread Your Wings. Absolutely great tune. Why it never charted higher than 34 is beyond me. You can hear Freddie really pushing his vocals, especially when he sings "Sammy". John Deacon really showed his songwriting skills. Though, has anyone listened to the BBC sessions version? That version absolutely destroys this version. It's over 5 mins long and Freddie is absolutely magic on it. The piano notes at the beginning, whilst simple, are very apt and haunting. All in all, a wonderful song. 6th song on the album? Ahhhh I think it's fight from the inside. Sorry to bad mouth a song, but I don't like this song at all. It's not 'Queen' so to speak. Roger Taylor's voice is only a good backing vocal not a lead in my opinion. If I wanna hear raspiness I'll get into Rod Stewart one day. Too much punk on this album! Get Down, Make Love? At first I didn't like this song (and Freddie must have been writing from personal experience on this song by the way) but after reading about how it's influenced some industrial/ trance artists such as Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) I was prepared to give it another go. Some of the effects are quite impressive actually and the 'everytime I get HIGH' vocal part is quite impressive. This song is ok for me to listen to once every 6 months or so. Not a staple of the Queen catalogue but adventurous and illustrates how they were willing to experiment. Sleeping On The Sidewalk........ hmmmm..... I don't like this song. Hearing this as well as all those other non Mercury compiliations made me think this is a much different Queen album as Fred is not singing nearly so much. Brian May's vocals are nothing special either. Hmmmmm....... if someone could convince me otherwise? Who Needs You? This song is filler as well as Sleeping On The Sidewalk. It reminds me of 'In Only Seven Days' off the Jazz album, or of a nice beach/ hawaiin sort of feel. Cheery but never destined to be a classic. His voice is sounding sweet but it doesn't tug at the heartstrings or anything. Ohhh yeah. It's Late. Wonderful track. The third best song on the album (after the opening two staples of course). At 1:10 in the song when he hits "just" in "Is it just my sickly pride" you think 'what a freaking great singer this guy is'. I know it's 6 1/2 |

NOTW was for a long time my favorite album because it was one of the first I ever heard. This might sound silly but what attracted me to the album wasn't the music at first, it was the artwork! I absolutely love the covers from this album! The robot image is so extrodinairy! Anyway today, my favorite album is Queen II. But New of The World is still in my top 5 with great songs like It's Late, My Melancholy Blues and of course the world's greatest anthems, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. |

NOTW is one of my favourite Queen albums, and is definitely one of the best sounding ones, production wise. In one of the rare occurrences where I have the benefit of age (!), I remember hearing WATC for the very first time on the radio, and being disappointed at the short guitar solo, and WWRY didn't strike a chord with me at first either! Little did I know then, that they would become the classics which they are. Sheet Heart Attack was Queen's answer to punk - my god that was heavy!! I remember my Dad yelling at me to "turn that bloody row down!" Lol! All Dead is a sublime beauty, again, unappreciated at the time (I was 13), but then Spread Your Wings came along, in all it's glory. I remember predicting this would be the next single, which it was. Roger's Fight From The Inside was the first weak link, but even that was better than Drowse, from the last album. Side Two starts with Get Down Make Love. Being 13 in 1977, this was quite embarrassing to play in front of my parents (!), so this track was frequently skipped, but I never liked it much anyway. Sleeping On The Sidewalk was probably my favourite track on the album so far (but the best was yet to come), then Who Needs You kind of slowed the pace somewhat, but I still liked the track, especially as I discovered you could make a really crude 'instrumental' version, by disconnecting one of the speakers! My first step into remixing - lol! Then, ooohh, the power, the passion, the glory of It's Late! This is still probably my favourite ever Queen track, and can never be played loud enough. Words can't describe the absolute brilliance of this song. The lyrics, the drums, the guitar, Fred's astounding vocals, ultimate perfection, and the band never (in my opinion) wrote a song like it again. Melancholy Blues was a nice soft landing to finish one of the greatest albums of the mid to late 70s. Queen never sounded like this again, as they started to become more single oriented and mainstream, and every album they released since (perhaps with the exception of Live Killers), was a slight disappointment, as I always hoped they would return to the majestic beauty, power and splendour of ANATO, ADATR and NOTW, but sadly, in many ways, they never did. |

OMG! I love this album!!! When i firts got it this summer, i listened to it on repeat NON-STOP for like a week atleast!!! Ok Of course We have the opening tracks of WWRY and WATC, which of course i dont have much to say, because they songs themselves can speak, well for themselves. These songs have withstood the test of time along with BO RHAP among others. However they are Queens most recognizable to non-rock fans, you mention Queen and someone who doesnt know who they are, the second you mention WWRY and WATC, you almost everytime get the same reaction, "Wow, those songs are awesome, i love to hear it before a basketball game" or something to that effect. SHA- I really enjoy this track because its a total departure from everything Queen had ever done before, a total 180 from their usual rock. It almost doesnt sound like Queen at all, you really have to listen to it to realize it is indeed. Although Freddie isnt at his height vocally, you can tell there is a lot of energy in the whole song. Roger's drumming is absolutely superb on this song, and lyrically, is a very Tayloresque song, relateable to real life, almost an unsung anthem for teens who feel trapped under pressures and just want to disappear for fear of nothing better coming along. Thumbs up. ADAD- a simple and beautiful song, as most of Brians are when he sings them. The lyrics are fantastic and poetic. And the piano, coupled with Freddies accompanyment on the "all dead, all dead" chorus parts and strategically placed throughout the song sends shivers up my spine each time i listen to it. Brians voice is not nearly as strong as Freddies, however, when he sings on some of his compositions, it fits the song perfectly. His small guitar breaks also add a haunting effect in this already chilling ballad. SYW- Most definatly one of Deaky's BEST compositions. More powerful (vocally) than You're my Best friend, yet just as beautiful. (The fact that the name 'Sammy' was used also adds a little biased on my part, as my name is Samantha, and ive never heard Sammy used in any song prior to this one). The determination of "Sammy" is shown excellently through Freddies vocal stylings and power. Again, another really relateable song for many people, because you know that it could be someone you know, or the man down the street. It really invokes a sense of sadness for the lead character, yet a complete sense of hope for him and yourself, "Cause you know you should do better, because you're a free man". Fight From the Inside- Most definatly a Roger song. I really enjoy his scruffy voice on this rockin' tune. Its a very motivating song with powerful drums, bass and guitar the whole way through. It really makes you want to totally rock out. Although not very good for others, i really enjoy this song. Again very relateable. (Just as a side not i feel that this Album was rather aptly named because each song in some way for someone, is totally relateable, its almost as if they were reporting NOTW for the masses in a really emotional way, with amazing musicianship.) GDML- Although not one of my top songs. Its still very fun. And totally gives a peek into Freddies umm.. well interest in love making shall we say. The double entendres in this song are rather fitting to the whole song. I do enjoy the beats. Despite its sexually charged lyrics, its still a good song. Sleepin on the Sidewalk- A short story-telling track with a really bluesy feel. Brian said he wrote it in one sitting and you can tell, but it still done really well. Although seen by a few as a filler, i think its a good song, simple yet fun, especially for blues fans. It has some sassy lyrics on it, my personal favorite is "...So i told 'em where to stick they're fancy lables, its just me and the road from here". I really enjoy this CD. WWRY and WATC are probably Queens most famous songs. SHA, well, I love it, my dad loves it. I like the quick paced song about almost nothing ADAD- Nice emotional feel SYW- LOVED IT! I reflected on it during a CC race and I felt that sense perfectly FFTI- Its an OK song, I have nothing bad to say about it but its kind of average GDML- Not very good in terms of depth but still a catchy beat and well, I wouldn't mind gettin' down and makin' love to it SOTS- Nice job by Brian, I like the almost Country feel to it WNY- This song is great! We put it on a CD and sent it to an EX of my friends and she showed that dousche who was boss! IL- Nice rock and roll love song, liked the "Take me back my love" lyrics to the quicker paced guitars MMB- Its OK, but I dont particularily (sp?) enjoy the falsetto voice throughout it. WWRY and WATC are, as many say, possibly Queen's two most timeless songs (excluding Bohemian Rhapsody, obviously). I had gotten fed up of these, but since I've 'become' a drummer over the last year, I've been able to re-discover A LOT of songs again, and WATC is definitely one of these. Great piano, great guitar, wonderful melody, and the drum fill before the chorus is absolute genious. Sheer Heart Attack, despite that annoying noise from Brian in the middle that makes people stare at you on Public Transport is a great rock n roller, not the greatest song, but I don't often skip it. As songs with undertones regarding a deceased cat go, this one is pretty good. It's not my favourite of Brian's tracks, but there are parts I especially like, e.g. the versus, and the guitar. Spread Your Wings is possibly one of the most underrated Queen tracks. Once more, another masterpiece by Mr Deacon. There is no fault with this track, love it. Love the piano, the powerful - yet almost orchestral - drums by Rog, great guitars by Bri and John. And as a love track is fucking awesome. Fight From The Inside - nice tune, but as much of a Roger fan as I am, it's not his greatest masterpiece, but does it's job. Get Down, Make Love - much like More Of That Jazz, you either love it or hate it. Personally, I love it. Other than the ear piercing guitar work during Brain's "solo", it is great. Quality drums too. Sleeping On The Sidewalk - I wish Brian would do more blues stuff (I'd hardly say it sounds 'country' though). He excels at songs like this, and its simplicity is the key to its success. Love the guitar solo's too. Who Needs You - this song used to bore me, but more recently, I've started to prefer it over a lot of others. I love Freddie's vocals on this track, and I think it has great production. It's Late - unfortunately I've overplayed this one quite a lot, but what a track. It's majesty is uncovered in the BBC session. My Melancholy Blues - this is by far one hell of a track. Im not sure who said it on here before, but it always makes me imagine Freddie sitting in a smokey bar at a piano, no one really around, sitting at the piano, playing away. But, it is not falsetto... try Freddie's "Excersises In Free Love" - or perhaps the Bee Gees!? |

yes, I like this album. It's a real improvement on A Day At The Races and reminds people that Queen were first and foremost a rock band We Will Rock You- A strong start. Not as great as people say it is but still a good anthem to kick things off. It sounds better live, I think. We Are The Champions- Excellent, I love the contrast between the sober verses and the bombastic chorus; some subtle use of vocal harmonies before the chorus add to its appeal. I don't like the ending though. Sheer Heart Attack-Top song. Queen doing lightning speed punk-metal if there is such a thing. I love the aggression,energy and rhythm section of this song. A nice fuzzy drum solo and some guitar that sounds like a heart machine are highlights. Good harmonising between Fred and Roger on the "do you know" bit. All Dead All Dead- It's a grower. At first I disliked its simplicity but it caught hold of me. A mellow vocal performance from Brian suited the song nicely though the piano/drum is a bit mechanical. A lovely piece of guitar orchestration towards the end though. Spread Your Wings- A very good pop song with a great heavy guitar undercurrent. I love the acoustic transition between chorus and verses, the piano playing is elegant and the vocal performance is superb- so much passion from Freddie. Perhaps a sprinkling of harmony vocals may have improved it further but then again, its rawness was welcome. Fight From the Inside-I really like this song and don't understand why other Queen fans don't. It's lean, tight and agressive,a street-fighter of a rock song. Roger Taylor's vocal is razor sharp, much better than on Drowse. Get Down Make Love- I hate the fat bass on this song. It doesn't really do it for me but the version on Live Killers is great. The harmonised middle section is a mystery and the transition from the verse to "everytime..." is a bit clumsy. It is better a bit quicker and so should have been a staple live. At Wembley in '86, they could have done this and the special effects could have led to A Kind of magic. The lyrics are rather crude and I don't think that Freddie ever wrote with the same quality after this. Sleeping On The Sidewalk- Well, it's better than most of the folk offerings Mr May gave us around this time. Some gutsy guitar work but I don't really like the vocal performance. Freddie could have given it a bit more emphasis. Still, it's a pretty strong blues diversion. Who Needs You- A pretty salsa song, written by John Deacon. I like the illusion destruction theme of this track and the exotic percussion is very welcome. Lovely acoustic guitar work. Quiet but very good in an understated way. Some nice overlapping harmony vocals. It's Late- takes a bit of time to take off but when it does there's no heading back. A monstrous heavy rocker and with the lyrical sophistication accustomed with Brian May. Nothing more to say, it's super. My Melancholy Blues-It's Freddie in his jazz guise but not this time in the ragtime/vaudeville world but as a thirties lounge jazz crooner. Just a magnificent song with relaxed jazzman drumming and elegant paino playing. It's a shame that Queen forgot these jazzy numbers in the eighties,because they were great. On the whole, I love this album's diversity, it's rawness and energy. I do think it's true however that until Innundo Queen stopped caring about every little sonic nuance which was a shame. however the musical climate was changing and Queen's ability to adapt only showcased their ability to an even greater extent. |

This is my fav Queen album. I'm not a big fan of Who Needs You or Get Down Make Love (although I like GDML live) but apart from those two, I would gave all the other songs a 4 or 5 out of 5. It's Late is one of the best Queen songs ever and I think Brian really showed how great a songwriter he was on this album. 4 totally differant songs, all great. Corse WATC is great because it must be the biggest anthem ever. Sheer Heart Attack is great and Spread Your Wings is another of Queen's best ever. Fight From The Inside is good aswell. And My Melancholy Blues is the perfect end to the album. |

This album isn't one of the best Queen albums around but I have to admit that WATC is my favourite Queen 'hit' that there is and Spread Your Wings is my all time favourite Queen song (along with Hijack My Heart) so for that reason alone the album is still damn good. |

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS - Ah, well, what can you say? I love it, but it's wierd because I hardly ever listen to it. It just feels like one of those songs that no-one wrote, you know, it has always been there and you've always known it. WE WILL ROCK YOU - Again, same as WATC. But, I mean, who writes a song like this? Only a genious could :) SHEER HEART ATTACK - Not really my favourite song. It's a bit loud for me. But yeah, I still love it, becuse it shows how flexible Queen were in their songwriting. ALL DEAD ALL DEAD - OMG, I love it!! It's so beautiful, it almost makes me cry, and always puts me down. SPREAD YOUR WINGS - This is lyraclly (sorry for my english) one of Queen's best songs. It's just wonderful and Freddie's voice is so great, so much emotion. Love it. FIGHT FROM THE INSIDE - Yeah, just like someone wrote before, this is a bit averege. Not bad, but not exactly an outstanding song GET DOWN MAKE LOVE - First tine I heard this was on the Live at the bowl-dvd, and I thought it was great.It was just cool, and naughty :) Now, I don't really listen to it that much, but I still think it's good. But perhaps it's a bit heavy for me. SLEEPING ON THE SIDEWALK - Haha, I laugh at this one really. It's a fun, not very big song, nice to sing along with. WHO NEEDS YOU - I love this one, it's just nice, reminds me of Misfire. They kinda have the same spirit. Just a sweet little song. IT'S LATE - OMG!! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!!!!! This is a perfect song, it's just perfect, I can't say one single thing that is bad about it. Everything is beyond words; the guitarriff, Freddies voice, the chorus, the lyric, the drums at the end, everything. What I really like about this song too, is the sort of pain ("when I'm bleeding deep inside" "is it just my sickly pride?") that this ong has captured. Not kust the lyric, but everything, it's so begging and painful, that it almost hurts to listen to it. One of my absolute favourites! |

oops dunno what happened, but yeah, yeah... MY MELANCHOLY BLUES - A nice close up, and it's just depressing and beautiful. News of the worl over all? A very thrown-together album, wich I love. It's naked in some way, it has naked feeling over it. The bombast that was on ANATO is gone, and that is one of Queen's brillinaces. They never stop changing. |

I never get past get down make love because my shitty cd player couldn't take playing sheer heart attack (album) and news of the world. when i got my mp3 player i listened to sleeping on the sidewalk but never get around to the other songs. similar to the fact that to save batterys i skip top 10 hits and dragon attack on the game also i skip from let me entertain you straght to fun-it on jazz! i love Fun-it and can't wait to be insulted for my opinion. |

I think News Of The World is a very good album, altough is the worst of the 70's. It lacks elaboration and it has some baaaad songs in it. Anyway, it has GREAT songs like We Are The Champions and Spread Your Wings. |

News Of The World is one of my favourite Queen albums, probably #4 or #5 in the list... This album shows Queen were first and foremost a rock band, and is their response to the punk movement at the time. Roger has said this album features a lot of heavy stuff in response to that, perhaps to remind people that Queen were still around and cool, maybe? Having said that, the album does feature some lighter moments - My Melancholy Blues,Spread Your Wings, All Dead, All Dead & Who Needs You in particular provide a sharp contrast to the likes of Rock You, It's Late & Sheer Heart Attack; illustrating the versaility of the band. Like the Jazz album, John's two contributions (Spread Your Wings & Who Needs You) once again show what a talented songwriter he is. Wings was the 2nd UK single from the album and should have charted a lot higher than it did at #34...a tremendously underrated song in my opinion and transfers seamlessly both live and on the BBC version, where it takes a new direction entirely. Get Down Make Love is one of those songs you either love or you hate...I personally cannot stand this song, and find it cringeworthy to hear it, bit like Body Language, really. Aside from Rock You, It's Late is the best track on the album...it has everything, an excellent riff to open and powerful vocals... Melancholy Blues is an excellent ballad, another one of Freddie's gems and is a great closer. No complaints here overall... |

New of the world is probably my 6th favorite queen album, only behind the first 5 albums, and slightly ahead of jazz, the game, and innuendo. The album has no bad songs for me, my favorites are "champions" "spread your wings" and "get down make love," every song is ace. "my melancoloy blues" "it's late" are also favorites. |
