Evil Alex!!!!
Get Guinea Pigs Dan!!! Guinea pigs are just like dogs!! Chinchillas are nocturnal aren't they? You can't play with them if they sleep all the time!!
:)
I have three chinchillas. Two females that live together, ChiChi and Kahlua, and one male that I just got this past April, a little TOV ebony called Inky. Lisser is right, they are nocturnal, but they are ready and willing to come out to play in the morning hours, and also early evening. They are extremely easy to care for, have no real odor about them and they are loads of fun to watch, as they are very very active. They are not cuddly animals, some are more friendly than others, but Chinchillas are not the type of pet that will sit and cuddle in your lap for hours. Chinchillas are also extremely long lived. My first Chinchilla, who passed on about 4 years ago, was 16 when she died!
edit* If you're going to get two, be sure to make it two females. Males are not good together. They can also live quite well alone, as long as they get plenty of time out with you.
Ahhh Janet! I knew you were most likely to answer my question. Despite being nocturnal I'd still like to get chinchillas. My girlfriend and I want to get two when we move out (since we might not be allowed to have big pets like dogs or cats). She might have an issue with chinchillas not being cuddly, because we just love petting animals. Although I don't expect them to be as cuddly as a dog or a cat.
Also would you recommend getting chinchillas from a breeder? Pet stores sell them for around $125 each.
I still say get Guinea pigs. Mine are so cuddly. My male GP is just like a dog. He loves to be held and snuggled with. If you have him on the floor for play time, he will come if you call him. My girls on the other hand, they are divas. They are ok once you get a hold of them but they will run from you.
Janet...don't let Alex and Pieter eat piggies!!!! Get em girl!!!!!!

Deep Fried Piggie Reciepe:
Take an appropriate number of skinned and gutted guinea pigs and deep fry in hot oil. In a separate pan cook onions, peppers, chills and garlic and season well. Add peanuts just before serving, ideally with rice. One guinea pig will just about feed one adult, but you'll need plenty of vegetables with it. Watch out for the little bones!

I love guinea pigs too...
...but I dunno there's something about chinchillas.
No Guinea Pig eating. That is final. ;-)
Mr Jingles, I would definitely get your chins from a breeder if you can find one in your area. Babies purchased from a breeder will be better socialized. The breeder I bought my little TOV ebony from was selling the normal greys for 95.00.
edit* here is the breeder I got my little Inky from. Lots of good info at this site. link
