Nice reading. If you ask me, I was very spoiled as a child, teen, young adult, and to this day I know my parents would be there for me in any time of need. HOWEVER...nothing was handed to me on a silver platter. I had clear rules and expectations from my parents. Did I follow every rule and every curfew? No, but when I broke the rules, a punishment or here's a new word for some...a consequence was given to me. For example...if my curfew was midnight and I came home at 12:10am. The next time I went out I had to come home at 11:50pm. I always knew what was acceptable and not acceptable in my home. I knew that I was expected to follow the rules of our house and for the most part, I did. I tested every now and again just to see if those consequences were still in place. They were.
I think the bottom line is, definitely reward your children when it is appropriate. Discipline your child when it is appropriate. Explain what you expect from them. Explain what is not acceptable. Teach them responsibility for their actions and things shoud be ok. I turned out pretty ok, at least I think and I have my parents to thank. I love them very much.
I would have to agree with this article. For the most part, I cruise through life while simultaneously meeting success, and yes, I do expect that to happen in the future. I have to say that my number one priority in life is having a good time (restricted by obligations, of course), and I can't understand how anyone could think otherwise.
Yet still, this society, in my opinion, is overly focused on production, and work. You see, if EVERYBODY reduced their human capital, then we would essentially be in the same position as before the shift. However, extreme competitiveness in winner-take-all markets encourages these wasteful investments. It disappoints me.
