Hello everyone. I have been playing the drums for many years and the question I have for you guys is, what drumset of Rogers do you prefer, his Hot Space Kit or Magic Kit?
In 1982, he used Simmons Electronic Pads, Roto Toms and had a cowbell for special effects.
In 1986, he used Triggers on his drums, and had an Octapad for special effects, but he did not use a cowbell during that year.
I loved his '82 Set, because of the pads and cowbell, but I have been watching Live in Budapest '86 a lot recently and when I hear Radio Ga Ga being played, Roger's set sound awesome.
Take care and have a wonderful day!!!!

i think they both sound excellent, on the magic tour it's more of a raw sound wheras on the hot space kit there are more synths. one of my particularly favorite beats is somebody to love off live at the bowl, it's genius!
I'm not a technical expert on this but I think it is safe to assume the 1982 sound was geared towards the Hot Space tracks....
Personally I prefer the 1982 shows and therefore will go with that as opposed to 1986.
I love Both!!! his tecnique fits in any Drumset!! Isnt it??
The drumsets is not excellent for him, He is excelent for drum set!!
I am not being analysing the sound tecnically but thats it.. in my oppinion
Roger, although class behind any kit, and obviously adapted with age, types of songs, the changing Queen sound etc, I always thought was most impressive in the early days, mid-late seventies perhaps. Big kits, loadsa cymbals, like a rib-cage of drums. All those toms - love it.
Watching him fly round a huge kit is just a constant highlight of any show.
Im not sure. I know both sets where very different
82
26 bass
10, 12, 14 toms
16 and 18 floor toms
86
22 bass
12,13,14 toms
16 and 18 floor toms
Not to mention with different heads (in 82 he used Ludwig Rockers and in 86 he used Remo Pinstripes)
But for my favorite sounding drums, id say it would be 77-79. But id pick 86 because I think Roger kinda killed the fun in 82 with his electrics. So 86 all the way.
The only thing I didn't like about the 82 tour and Hot Space was those damn Simmons drums. They should call them Electric, not Electronic, cause that infers a brain being present.
Ask Bill Bruford why he threw his away.
Personally, the chrome, Ludwig 82 Kit did it for me, the simmons stuff was not used that much, in fact to this day he still uses triggers, on the 2005 tour he was using a trigger on his Bass Drum.
The 86 kit was a disappointment to me visually however it sounded great in the stadium, the older Ludwig black kits were wonderfully large but apparently difficult to mic.
The new version of his Ludwig maple kit is the one I feel sounds best live of the ones I've seen, with the silver sparkle coming last, but that was just the way he had the mics set up at the time, the kit was no different basically to his old black ones.
