Difficult one! ... both Berlin gigs were Open-Air shows... 1986 was a little bit warmer temperature wise as it was a late June date... both shows finished with GSTQ... they stayed at the same hotel in 1982 and 1986... Berlin still was surrounded by the wall in both of those years... Fred was still alive & rocking in ´82 and in ´86... though he missed to take the same PanAm flight to Munich in 1986 as the rest of the group... but anyway... ... it´s got to be a tie in my opinion! ;-) PS: Ok... judging those concerts by the amount of mosquitos at the venue... ...advantage 1982! :-) |

Magic was commercially their biggest tour, and their stage presentation was fantastic. They had totally focused on the visual aspects of their show. By this point, Freddie had perfected his abilities of being an incredible entertainer. However, musically, they took few chances. The April Hot Space setlist rocked. Liar, Somebody To Love, Get Down Make Love, Back Chat... And they experimented quite a lot with the order of songs in April, and finally found one they were happy with by May - but then they dropped Liar. Freddie's voice was in much better shape in early 82 than in most 86 shows as well. The US and Japanese shows were mostly average shows, and by the end, they were so sick of touring and of each other that their performances were just mediocre. So it all depends on what one feels makes a great show. The songs, the visuals, the number of people attending, etc. But if I had to choose, I'd say Hot Space. |

If you mean Houston 77 check ebay. THey're all over the place now. My dvd should be in shortly. And to answer the question to the topic. I think the '82 tour was better. Lots of energy during those shows. |

Freddie's voice was much much better during '82. Probably the best his voice ever sounded live on a consistent basis. I would probably prefer the setlist of '86. |

All right, this is a tough one, so i'll break it down. Song Selection: Hot Space Tour - They had just released Hot Space, which was a failure commercially, but still had its good moments. Under Pressure, Action This Day, Staying Power, Body Language, and Back Chat were played very well on this tour, even better than the studio versions. The fast version of WWRY was also included. They went as far back as 1974 with such songs as Now I'm Here and Love Of My Life. A great mix of old and new, with songs being added and dropped along the way. Magic Tour - Once again, they had released a new album, A Kind Of Magic. Four tracks from the album were played during this tour, Who Wants To Live Forever, One Vision, Friends Will Be Friends, and the title track. Excerpts from Liar and Keep Yourself Alive, two of their earliest tracks, can be heard, the former being the intro to Tear It Up during their performance at Wembley. Seven Seas Of Rhye, Now I'm Here, and other earlier tracks can be prominently heard during this tour as well. This tour also featured classic non-Queen songs such as You're So Square, Tutti Frutti, and Big Spender, performed excellently by the band. Another great mix of old and new, with some surprises as well. Winner: Magic Tour Freddie's Voice: Hot Space Tour - Freddie was in excellent condition throughout most of the tour. He was able to hit many high notes, especially in songs such as WATC, TYMD, and even Action This Day. Very light and playful, he was able to tackle softer songs such as Play The Game, and also rough tracks like Sheer Heart Attack. Strong, but not too strong. Magic Tour - Freddie's voice underwent changes within the four years between '82 and '86. He began smoking and drinking more, which roughened his voice, and sometimes limited his range. His voice cracked during some songs, and other songs he would instantly go lower with his voice. His vocal improvisations were unharmed, however, and were certainly fun to play along with. Winner: Hot Space Tour Best Venue: Hot Space Tour - The Milton Keynes Bowl in Milton Keynes, England. A small venue in comparison to Wembley, but worked for them nonetheless. The crowd, though not extremely large, can be heard very well during many songs, and, being an outdoor venue, was impeccable. Magic Tour - Wembley Stadium. The Madison Square Garden of Europe, in my opinion. Very large; fans by the thousands could fit into it. The structure of the stadium also allowed for sound to be carried all the way to the back rows. The sound could also be reflected off of the structure, so everything was heard almost clearly. A fine venue, for a very fine band. One concert was not enough, so i'm glad they did 2 shows there. Winner: Magic Tour Anything Else? Hot Space Tour - The instruments used were good. The drums were very strong, and Brian's licks were beyond anything at the time. Fantastic shows, especially Milton Keynes (MK was the last show there, though it was supposed to end in London) Magic Tour - Pretty much their most famous tour, with songs from all across their catalogue. Though Freddie was not at his best in my opinion, he led the way through every show. Brian, Roger, and John knew exactly what to do, and this tour is by far the best one! Final Score: Magic Tour - 2 Hot Space Tour - 1 Verdict: Magic Tour!!! Rock on! |

Magic Tour was great, really loved John during that tour. I mean, he was jumping around and stuff (and did many backing vocals!), not the shy guy, just Johnnyboy. Hot Space tour has a much better setlist and much better performances. I go for Hot Space, but Magic Tour is very close. |
Asterik 02.11.2005 15:34 |
In terms of setlist, I'd say the Hot Space tour. I'm sorry but why did Queen drop Somebody To Love post '85? Play The Game and Fat Bottomed Girls should also have been included, as they sounded really tight on the Hot Space tour. As did Dragon Attack, which for me is the highlight of the On Fire disc-so sharp. Hardly any of the piano based soongs appear on the Magic tour. Freddie must have got bored of playing it! In terms of power, spectacle and presentation though, the Magic tour wins hands down. Fred may not have had the subtlety with his voice but he belts out One Vision, Tie Your Mother Down etc. with incredible gusto. The rocked-up versions of Magic and Under Pressure sound great and Freddie seems so much better at working a big audience than he did in '82. They were much more confident and put on great shows. Overall then, it has to be The Magic tour, though, in hindsight I would have liked to have seen those piano favourites in the set; when one bears in mind that it would be Freddie's last curtain. |

Best setlist: -82 Best lighting: -86 Best sound: - 05 If you mixed the setlists from -77, -82 and -05, added the lighting from -86 and the sound from -05, you would probably have the ultimate Queen Live ! :-) |

Without a doubt the Hot Space tour. Magic tour his voice was totally different and nowhere near as good. He was also less lithe and energetic on stage too during the Magic Tour and plus he was getting a bit tubby as well. On Hot Space they have a much better setlist as well. |

The Magic Tour is the worst ever IMO, boring setlist, weak drums, Freddie's voice wasn't the best etc. etc. 1982 was just... AMAZING :) |

Both great tours, but Magic wins it for me. |
