Hi folks, Just wanted to ask you all out there to please have those in the gulf coast area of the states in your thoughts and prayers. I live in southwest louisiana, which was spared the wrath of the storm, but we have many many refugees who have no way to get home, or any means to get word of their loved ones. So, from one cajun Queen fan, to you all, please keep us in your thoughts, hearts, and prayers. Thank you |

One thing I don't understand though is why so many people decided not to seek shelter in one of the shelters provided ? ie Superdome |

Alot of people did not leave because of complancy.(imho) We are used to hurricane's in this part of the states...leaving alot of folks, who have lived through hurricane's before to think they will be alright. The last major storm to hit that area was Camille back in 1969. |

The mayor just announced that things are far worse than originally reported. Alot of the levy's broke, and even all of the 20,000 some evacuated people in the Superdome are TRAPPED by flood waters, so now they have to be evacuated again. The mayor says thousands are feared dead and that ALL of New Orleans will have to be evacuated as it's entirely under water now. Even the Pentagon is sending troops down there. I have not seen a Hurricane here in the States this catastrophic since Andrew in 1992. My Mom was still living in Florida at the time and the Natl. Guard forcibly evacuated her for over a week. ...Bryans Permed Poodle, I can tell you this. When I was finally able to reach my Mom by phone in 1992, over a week later (all phones were down along with electric, water and martial law), she was hysterical, NOT because they evacuated her, but..because she did NOT want to be evacuated as she had a 15 year old cat she adored at the time, and when the Natl Guard forcibly evacuates you, they will NOT allow you to take your pets. She was so terrified her cat would die (thank God the flood and wind did not damage her home and the cat was ok though hungry and dehydrated). But alot of people do NOT want to leave their homes, or pets, etc., even though they themselves might die..they are willing to take that chance. They FORCED my Mom to evacuate...and that is why alot of people CHOSE to stay in New Orleans. |

You are right Arlene. Alot of folks do not want to leave. Last year, my best friend's brother stayed in Pensocola, Florida during one of the 4 storms that hit that state. He and his girlfriend did not want to leave their home in which they had spend so much time and money, and had so many memories attached. There are also alot of people, especially in New Orleans, that are just too poor to have a way to get out. Alot of those folks are in the Superdome...but will soon be taken to the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. I just heard a report that flooding of New Orleans has eased, since the level of the Lake has equaled the water level in the city. But it is expected to rise again at high tide, which is to come around 8 or 9 tonight. I'm 32, and have NEVER seen anything like this. But, I will say this. We here in Louisiana, and all along the gulf coast are resiliant people, and we will re-build!! Looking forward to strolling around the "big easy" and partying on Bourbon street as soon as we get back on our feet!!! |

Take Care!!!!!!!! :) |

As a Southern boy from North Carolina (the 'REAL Carolina'), my sympathies go out to you. It seems we get hit hard almost every year, and sometimes a couple times a year on the Outer Banks. My sympathies and prayers go out to everyone down there. I hope you all get back on your feet again. |

i dont think the superdome was a terrible idea, but sticking all of those people into one building? couldnt they do anything better then that? i also heard the toilets stopped working for a while. was this true? god, i wouldnt be able to bear leaving my pets alone while i seek shelter. theyre way to important to me. they would have to pry me off of them with a crowbar, strap me down, and drag me to the nearest shelter. keep in mind that they would have to deal with my kicking and screaming. 0_0....horrible... my thoughts and prayers are always with the victims and their families and friends through devastating times. im donating anything as soon as possible. *hugs* |
BricePerrin 01.09.2005 12:48 |
The superdome's basic needs...i.e.; power, water, restrooms, air-conditioning, etc. stopped working during the storm. The folks in there have had very little since early monday morning. I heard this morning that the evacuation efforts from the dome to Houston had been suspended due to someone firing at a military helicopter. Folks are storming the busses brought in to carry the refugee's out. They still aren't done getting the most frail out of there. New Orleans is decending fast into TOTAL anarchy. |

I LOVE Fats Domino..''I Found My Thrill...On Blueberry Hill''. I live in Maryland, and last night I saw we are sending tons of Maryland Nat'l Guard, Maryland Red Cross, The Governor's own Nurse Triage Unit, and, The USS Comfort, a Navy Ship from Maryland that was at Operation Desert Storm and 911 in Manhattan, that's based in Maryland that has something like 200 fully operational surgery operating rooms, with upwards of 200-300 surgeons, dosctors, nurses, another like 300 hospital beds, and another like 300 beds for hoemless people. |

My heart goes out to everyone in Louisianna and Mississippi. This is one of the most devestating things I've ever seen. I surrvived the 4 hurricanes that hit FL back to back last year, and the damage we received from them was no where near the devestation of Katrina. It will be years before Louisianna is back to normal. Everyone pray for the people affected by this tragedy. |

sharon g., i think its a nice thought to donate money to the red cross, but, i would suggest donating to the salvation army instead red cross, unlike the salvation army, puts all donations into one big fund that could go to any disaster salvation army, on the other hand, can promise you that your fund will go to the hurricane if you wish it to be |
