Recently a colleague was heard to say that in her opinion U2's lead guitarist is better than Brian?! I, personally, think Brian is fantastic, and asked her for some valid reasons, to back up this statement, which she didnt have, her reply was 'I just think he sounds better'. Which, to me, was like a red rag to a bull! However, I dont profess to know the first thing about playing a guitar, and thought it would be interesting to get some opinions from you guys, so who do you think is best, and why? I know you will probably say its bloody obvious who you like being on Queenzone!, but I would like to know what the more experienced would say is the difference between the two guitarists. |

Does Johnny Knoxville wants to sound like The Edge??? ... that says it all IMO!!! :-)) |

I don't think U2 are known because of their uncomparable guitar sound. :) |
freesia 24.06.2005 09:00 |
Well thats what I thought Mr. Drowse! I dont mind U2 occasionally, there are some of their songs that I like, (not many), as far as I am concerned, and as I said Im no authority. With Queen, we had Freddie, who was incomparable for writing, and lead vocals, Brian, excellent lead guitarist, good voice, and equally writer, Roger (who I love !) again, someone said the other day they thought he is the best drummer ever, to me he seems to be louder than anyone Ive heard, and very precise, and his voice is just something else, when backing Freddie the mix between their voices was beautiful, and John? Well I know nothing but have heard he was a damn good bass player, all 4 write (wrote), coupled with the lighting, and on stage performance all rolled into the machine called Queen, spanning YEARS. Brian is an integral part to that overall sound, and I wonder, if you compare Brian with The Edge, what the differences would be, I havnt watched or listened to U2 much but hoped I would find someone who has, because I cant BELIEVE anyone would make a statement like one is better than the other, with nothing to back that up. |

I suppose its personal opinion as to who sounds the best, and yes Mr Edge does have a unique sound, but part of the reason for this sound is because he is not very good at all. He relies on masses of effects and loads of Delay to get 'his sound' but all this delay is doing is hiding the fact that he is a big pile of shite who has VERY limited ability. Not a patch on Brian, or even me for that matter. |

Really ?!! Is that right? You have just made my day!! I KNEW he couldnt be as good as Bri, I just KNEW it!!! Thanks very much for that I shall print this page out and show it to said colleague on her return!! |

why do people in QZ insist on these 'my dad is better than your dad' comparisons? look, it's simple we all prefer queen (although most of the time it's a joint 1st place ith the beatles for me)- so of course brian's guitar work will sound 'better' - but the fact is there are some morons who would claim that Bm is better than every guitarist living and dead...just for the sake of it i feel i can be objective about this - because 'BM's unique guitar sound' - as someone else put it....is NOT the reason i got into queen i got into queen 31 years ago - because of the vocal sound and freddie's piano on songs like KQ and SSOR....MFK...and NEVERMORE (beautiful this last one, and hardly a fucking guitar in sight) the edge is an excellent guitarist - certainly in MY top10, and BM is certainly not top of my list - Randy Rhoads is - closely followed by, Tom Scholz, Bernie Torme, Michael Schenker and THEN Brian May and to the person who said 'the edge covered his sound in echo and effects to disguise that he is shit' - isn't this the very thing BM does over and over???? listen to Brighton Rock, Son & daughter and many other songs with "big solos" you'll find the multilayered sound there...it not about being shit, it's about how THEY want the song to sound |

Exactly, bren. It's all down to personal opinion, and just because someone prefers guitarist X to guitarist Y does not mean X is better than Y. Next time, just smile and nod instead of getting worked up about it. |

Of course it is personal preference on who you prefer as a guitarist but at the end of the day Brian 'as a guitarist' is far superior to The Edge. |

I'm not being funny, but people say ''ah listen, you know its U2, theres the Edge'' - and why...? Becuase of that same old same old jangly riff he uses. And, yeh, Brian uses effects and what have you, but, at the end of the day, if The Edge (and most other guitarists old and new) tried do some of the live work Brian does with delays and what have you, they would mess up big time. Opinions are opinions, but I think it is very fair to say Brian May is very much the better guitarist. It's not like saying, ''whose better? Soundgarden or Audioslave?'' cause they are both very similar, but more like saying ''who is a better dancer? Michael Jackson or Britney Speares?''. Let's be honest, Michael Jackson wins hands done, purely for originality and sheer showmanship, whereas Brintey Speares may look like a good dancer, but its highly coreographed rubbish. |

Personal preference is far too much of a factor. Speaking as a big fan of both Queen & U2, I'd have to say that they're *different* guitarists. Brian's playing is more more solo/lead oriented. Sure, he plays rhythm, but it's mainly straight forward power chords. The Edge is rhythm-playing wise much more sophisticated, and is much more versatile in this manner. But then he's not a big solo man. On the other hand, Brian's a better big solo-player than The Edge - which is understandable, as that's Brian's thing. Also, to point out the flaws in this discussion, let me say how I could bring up, say Andres Segovia and lay waste to pretty much any guitarist ever. |
Daveboy35 24.06.2005 15:51 |
I know he's not Jimi hendrix is and will always be number 1 but brian is definetly no2 ,the edge is okay but nothing special, same riff and same rhythm. Riveting i think not!!!!!. |

I really think Brian outstrips The Edge by far because Brian can do some of the most amazing guitar solo's I've ever heard. I reccommend you all read "Queen and I - The Brian May story" It's a really good read and you see other peoples oppinions on just how amazingly talented they think he is. |
