OK, folks. After reading the latest thread about this Serious Discussion area, I started to brainstorm. What can we do as a group to make this place more interesting to read?
Obviously, John S Stuart's posts will be a welcome return to discussion - hopefully, he continues his eighties collection soon. In fact, this will be an official plea to John without nagging too much - they're the reason I decided to stay at QZ way back in the winter.
But, there has to be something else that you guys want. Here's what I was thinking:
• Album Discussion Threads: each week or two weeks, we take one Queen-related album, which would also include solo albums, and whoever wants to get involved in these will listen to the album all the way through and we will discuss it. Almost like a book discussion kind of thing. There would be rules, of course, which would be decided at a later date.
• Trivia Quizzes: yeah, I know we think we know all about Queen, but I'm sure there are loads that we don't know. Again, every week or two weeks one person would come up with a series of difficult trivia questions to ask everyone, and each person would try to answer them as best as they can. I'm not sure about prizes or if any will be rewarded, but it would be a good way to acquire some knowledge, especially for our younger, more inquisitve fans.
• Concert Reviews and Discussions: review an UNRELEASED concert and, those who have heard it, discuss them. Make sure they're concerts readily available in the Sharing The Music section, so that nobody could whine about them not being shared or traded. No officially-available concerts, though.
What're your thoughts? They're just a few ideas that I had, and I would be more than happy to be the main instigator behind each of them, but they'd have to be played by my rules.
And the first person who says "Why didn't you put this in The Lord Of Darkness's thread" gets an e-slap in the e-face.
Kinda book discussion club :)
Like it, we can try :) Some folks would surely join and we'd know they are the ones who wanna talk about Queen on this board :)
Hm, the intelligence level just dropped severely with that last poster. Of course, it will look like (soon enough) that I was making fun of grapefruit, when that was hardly the case - I was referring to the soon-to-be-banned Marcel.
I'm glad you guys like the idea of the Album Discussion Threads. I'll start to do them every other Sunday, starting this upcoming Sunday.
Several years ago when The Opposition was a regular poster, he had a series of threads where he discussed "forgotten" Queen songs in depth. This was not a rehashing of the Greatest Hits, nor was it a simple "do you like this song" thread. He deconstructed everything about a particular (and often obscure) Queen-related song.
This type of thread instantly turned off the casual fan because he might choose the 12inch version of Strange Frontier to discuss, and more than likely only hard-core fans are going to know it. And although I could rarely offer anything intelligent to the topic, I always found these threads interesting and they forced me to re-listen to some of the material.

Good idea. But call one name of a new zoner who would stick to the rules. Their all selvish
I think Lester's got some great ideas and I'm all for attempting them! Even if they don't work, they've got to be better than some of the other threads in here right now.
Good initiative Lester.
I've always thought just contributing to discussions and the board in an intelligent manner was enough, but there are enough monkeys to make this place seem like an overcrowded zoo :)
So a more structured apporach is definately a good idea. I'll be there with pants on...
what's wampum, man?

I don't know you well enough to say whether you are smart, but you're definately a smartarse :)
(Just kidding Lester, you are a very articulate, clever guy.)
