Ok so is it Brian's version or Queen's version that does it for you? Mine is Brian's because I think he puts more into it. Maybe it means more to him. And I like the arrangement better on his version. |
deleted user 07.02.2005 06:59 |
I also like Brian's version better. Its one of the few songs were Freddie's voice doesn't really fit. |
Sebastian 07.02.2005 07:05 |
Freddie's is "too" professional for the tune of the song imo. It's like putting a semi-quaver sweep picking fast scale as intro to CLTCL, sometimes less is more. |
Jjeroen 07.02.2005 07:59 |
And the guitarsolo in the Queen version sucks! |
john bodega 07.02.2005 08:24 |
I love his voice in the song - but it ain't right. Needs a more delicate touch. How can I put this... the lyrics and the roughness of his voice seem a bit mismatched. I dunno. |
Fenderek 07.02.2005 08:31 |
Brian- his verion is subtle Queen's is a bit corny, I don't know... Too nice, too melodramatic, to smooth... |
iGSM 07.02.2005 08:35 |
Brian has the agonising sound in his voice as though he deeply believes that too much love will kill you. |
Adam Baboolal 07.02.2005 09:36 |
I feel so alone liking the Queen version... Peace, Adam. |
agneepath! 11994 07.02.2005 09:49 |
Can't decide between the two... although would have loved a live version by Freddie. |

Adam Baboolal wrote: I feel so alone liking the Queen version... Peace, Adam.Don't feel alone, I like it better, too. I like Brian's as well, but the power in the Queen version is fantastic. I can see how some think it is "inappropriate", though. |

I like them both but it's true, Brian puts more heart in it. But he doesn't use his voice right... Ægishjálmur |
Hitman 07.02.2005 11:28 |
The Queen version is better, it's a modern song, with a rock arrangement. Brian's version is just more personal. And Freddie is not "too profesional" he has just a powerful and better voice. Adam you're not alone ;) |
Mayboy 07.02.2005 11:59 |
Both are great but Queen's version really does it for me |
Sonja 07.02.2005 12:29 |
I like Brian's version but it's Freddie singing it that does it for me. His voice is more powerful and when it comes to the higher notes Freddie could do it better than Brian. It's one of my favourite songs anyway and Brian singing it is really beautiful but Freddie's version almost gives me chills.. |
Proko 07.02.2005 16:11 |
Definitly Queen's version. It has "the" Queen sound. Freddie in all his vocal glory , Brian keeps it cool and not too many guitar overdubs , John and Roger - perfect rhythem section! And there you have it! |
mike hunt 07.02.2005 16:17 |
queen's version is much better simply because of freddie's voice, sounds great. brians voice was very weak in my opinion. the only thing i like in the brian version is the guitar solo, otherwise brians voice makes me cring. |
mike hunt 07.02.2005 16:28 |
i should say at times makes me cring, but times not so bad. 'long away' he sounds good and also 'another world', but at times he struggles big time. the way i see it is brian is actully good at singing ballads like 'tmlwky' but hard rock style i simply don't like way he sings them. to much love he sounds good in spots and others not so bad, so i agree mabe i overstated, but freds voice simply sounds great in 'to much love' and every other song i heard him sing, including the hated 'dilila'. |
dave2005 07.02.2005 17:40 |
Queen's version definitely ! 1 great difference between the 2 - Freddie's voice ! Its brilliant. He has a strong and powerful voice, which is very emotional in this song. For Brian its "acting", but for Freddie it was personal, he was actually dying when he sang it - and this can be seen. Brian overacts imo in this song. Freddie is very emotional, yet strong - his voice in the song expresses that. |

Not to down nobody but comparing Freddie's vocals to Brian's is absolutley ridiculous. I mean fuck sake, the song is about Freddie so having Freddie singing about his own demise was the best route in my book................Peace |
boy of destiny 07.02.2005 21:28 |
Brian's definitely. The live version is also better than the studio one. The build up to the guitar "breakdown" makes the song. |
Gunpowder Gelatine 07.02.2005 21:50 |
I love both versions, but I think Brian's is better. Freddie's voice always sounds amazing, but Brian adds extra feeling, since his emotions inspired him in the first place, but it makes the song sound more sincere. |
Boy Thomas Raker 07.02.2005 22:14 |
"Not to down anybody" as you'd say Lyrical Assassin, but I guess you get your handle by butchering what lyrics mean. TMLWKY is no more about Freddie than Mustapha is about Roger's goldfish. It's about what Brian was dealing with during his truly awful days from the end of HIS marriage and HIS relationship with Anita. It's a truly heartfelt song, which is why his version is 1000 times better than Queen's effort. Freddie's version is schmaltzy, middle of the road fare, made even worse by the fact that it was passed over by Queen before they added it as filler for MIH. |
Jimmy Dean 07.02.2005 23:45 |
Yea, that song is really not about Freddie, but i can see why you thought that lyrical assasin. Freddie being bisexual and all, "too much love" did eventually kill him. Lots of Queen's lyrics are misreperenstend by the fact that Freddie died of Aids. Before understanding poetry, I used to think My Love Is Dangerous, meant that Freddie believed that his love could infect someone ekse, and that's why it was dangerous... has nothing to do with that. Now back to the subject of the post... Queen version all the way, Brian wrote it w/ Muskers & Lamers for Freddie to sing, I would think, it does suit his voice. I just think the song never worked its way out to Freddie's liking and was probably too weak to do anymore takes and thus was left off the Miracle album. Brian's version, his voice is too weak to fit such a gigantic structure, many chord changes and difficult variations. The Queen version, and especially the Brian version, I think were not as over-the-top as they probably hoped, but nevertheless stands out as a genuine classic for obvious reasons. |
mike hunt 08.02.2005 01:36 |
that's wierd that 'to much love' was not considered to be good enough for the miracle because it would have been one of the better songs off that album, and i agree, brians voice was to weak to make a real mark in most songs. look at how many hits he had singing, obviously not many. |
iGSM 08.02.2005 01:45 |
He reminds me of Paul McCartney sometimes. Brian, that is. Not sure why..uh..they both play..uh..piano? |
brian_may_wannabe 08.02.2005 03:59 |
I love Brian's version, it's very emotional. But I also love the Queen version and I love the guitar solo. But yeah, Brian's version is more emotional and I love it. |
Daveboy35 08.02.2005 06:29 |
as the brian may's version was out first i always go back to the orignal and rate that version better than the queen version and yes when brian performs it live it also sounds fantastic. IMO it's brian may's best song he wrote i mean co-wrote with lamers and muskers. |
The Fairy King 08.02.2005 06:54 |
i think when Freddie sings it the song somehow means something else to me. I like both versions in their own right. |
dave2005 08.02.2005 07:23 |
How can somebody call Queen's version a filler? Thats nonsense. Its one of the best songs on the album, and Freddie sings it perfectly. Very emotional, yet strong and powerful voice. No matter who wrote it - it has a special meaning when Freddie sings it. Too bad that they left it out off Miracle, and that Brian released it right after Freddie's death, without unveiling the Queen version. There is nothing wrong musically with Queen's version - Freddie sings it well, his voice is powerful, everything is right. I think the reason for not including it on the Miracle could have been - it didnt fit topically on the album. The Miracle is mostly a happy uplifting album, without any "innuendos". And then they didnt include it on Innuendo, maybe because it was too direct - with all these rumors going around at that time, the song would have been to direct of a hint. So they left it for Made in Heaven. In a word, Queen's version does it for me. |
Sebastian 08.02.2005 07:27 |
It wasn't included in The Miracle for copyright or something like that |
deleted user 08.02.2005 08:01 |
Brian's version touches me more than Freddie's version. Brian gives more emotions to the song. Well...it's his song and that's why it's so great when he sings it. It's one of my favorites! |
dave2005 08.02.2005 08:09 |
Yeah ... but do you think we would be better off if Brian sang "his songs"? I dont think it would have been such a great idea to have Brian sing We Will Rock You, Hammer To Fall, etc. And furthermore, to have Roger sing Radio Ga-Ga, and John sing I Want to Break Free, etc. Thats not the point - to have the author sing it. Queen is not only Freddie's voice of course - its Freddie's voice, Brian's guitar, Roger's drums, and John's base - but the voice of Queen is Freddie. |
dave2005 08.02.2005 08:09 |
bass* :) |
Boy Thomas Raker 08.02.2005 09:36 |
Dave, I just find Queen's version incredibly schmaltzy and forced. It's a cover version, and like much of the MIH album, sounds contrived. I think Brian's version is more heartfelt, and musically the C minor/E flat turn at the end gives it a sense of drama lacking in Queen's version. I'll happily admit that I think MIH is a blot on the Queen catalogue. I think it's musically flat, incomplete and utterly contrived to capitalize on Freddie's death. It's morbid and creepy. On Innuendo, they did their last complete album as a band. To open with Innuendo, and end with Show would have been a perfect emotional way for the band and Freddie to say goodbye. Lots of people will disagree with me, and that's cool. Those are my reasons though, right or wrong. |
mike hunt 08.02.2005 09:50 |
i think we have a different opinion here. there's some things in the brian version i like better, but overall his voice ruins it for me, very weak singing, queens version has great singing. i thing the perfct tmlwky version would be to leave freddie's vocals but leave the guitar style in the original. |
legends never die! 08.02.2005 13:50 |
i prefer it when freddie sings this song! his voice is not to powerful for the song i think its perfect, and brians voice sounds a bit to quite. and i dunno who wrote it but i believe it when freddie sings it but i dont get the point of the discussion cos its impossible to decide between the two, cos there'll always be someone with a different opinion |
brian_may_wannabe 08.02.2005 14:26 |
Brian wrote the song with a couple of friends. |

Claire sweeney's version is brilliant (only joking) |
Hitman 08.02.2005 16:50 |
Well there are also other versions of Too Much love Will kill you linked with Brian -The duet Brian/Lamers -the duet Brian/Pavarotti -Claire Sweeney ... i think that there are good ideas in all those versions, even if the MIH version is always the better one according to me. |
