I have heard that Freddie was a decent guitar player, but I haven't ever seen him play one. Does anyone know of a live concert or anything where Fred plays guitar? I heard Brian say he performed the Rock section of Bo Rhap on guitar once at a live concert. It would be awesome to see that. Was there anything that Freddie couldn't do? |

I think Crazy Little Thing Called Love is the only song where he plays the guitar live. At least, I've never heard of any other songs where he does. Do you maybe have a quote from Brian where he says that? |
Darling39 07.01.2005 12:42 |
Well, I heard Brian saying that Freddie played live in Bo Rhap on the Greatest Hits DVD extras about the making of Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm not sure where exactly he says it, only that he does, or at least he thought he remembered it. |

Hi all, I thought I heard that he wrote songs like 'Ogre Battle' on guitar? Seem to remember Brian saying how Freddie would bash away at his acoustic guitar to come up with his 'heavy' songs. |
kohuept 07.01.2005 13:34 |
He did write Ogre and BohRhap and CLTCL on guitar. I believe he showed Brian on the guitar, but (except for CLTCL) he didn't recorded them for the final cut. I heard Brian say somewhere how quickly Freddie's hands moved while playin the guitar. I'm sure Freddie was being mostly modest while talking about how poorly he played. |
Sebastian 07.01.2005 16:03 |
Freddie played good. Of course he was not Steve Vai... his comments were self-depreciating, like when Kenny asked him how did he work out harmonies and he said "same as you do", but of course it's not that easy. Bo Rhap was written at the piano. Perhaps the riff was written at the guitar, although he could have played it in the piano and then Brian transferred it to guitar. Same for Deacon's bass-parts (not only concerning that song). Liar too was written on guitar, and probably most of his early work (e.g. what he composed for Ibex) |

I'd like to know surname of this Brian who told that Fred played Bo Rhap's hard rock part on guitar... :) |

Yeah I have only seen Freddie play the guitar live during CLTCL. He does this on every concert I should think - well obviously not ones before 1979! He always mentions he "only knows three chords", and that he's such an awful guitar player. One of his quotes was "I've made no effort to become a guitar hero because I can't play the fucking guitar!" In reality I think he played the guitar well - just for him it was always a bit of a joke! |
Awesome-O _4000 07.01.2005 19:08 |
DID he play a six string at the Bowl? I didn't notice, I'll have to look at that again... |
mickyparise 07.01.2005 19:15 |
Yes, Freddie sat in a chair, in Cleveland in 1980, and started strumming Crazy little thing called love, on the guitar, he also did it on the 1982 tour in Cleveland.........did a hell of a job! |
deleted user 07.01.2005 21:03 |
Well, he always says that he suck on guitar but I've read that Brian says he's not that bad. He uses guitar to compose some of his songs and he couldn't compose on a instrument he couldn't play on!! |
iGSM 07.01.2005 21:08 |
You can also see him play at Live Aid with his lovely white Telecaster. At least that's what I think it is. |

The only song as every one has already mentioned that i have seen him playing guitar live is Crazy Little Thing Called Love. |

He played the guitar on CLTCL live, but did he actually record it on The Game album. |

Yes Crazy Little Thing is the official one. But there are more contributions in the studio: John confirmed they all played guitar in the Hot Space album. I suppose Fred would play in his own song, so: Staying Power is definitely John, Body Language, ok it has only two seconds of guitar (literally speaking), but it sounds like Red Special, it's obvious Brian would do it. Under Pressure - I really doubt it, btw, theoretically, Roger or John could be in there playing the twelve string rhythm, nobody ever confirmed or denied that. Cool Cat has John's playing style. That only leaves Life Is Real. So I suppose that's where he played. Of course not the solo or the main rhythm, just one or more of the slight overdubs (like the strummed twelve string acoustic on the demo) Some people say Fred played in Need Your Loving as well, that he recorded it in the backing track and it was ok so they didn't replace it. Theoretically it could make sense as well considering John would play bass for the backing track so he couldn't do both at the same time. But I don't know whether it's just a rumour. Still, in the studio, CLTCL was never said to be the first or the last. |

I know this doesn't really count, but in case anyone's interested, there's a two second flash of Freddie playing electric in the "Princes of the Universe" video. |

"This shitty guitar only knows three chords!" -Freddie Mercury. "I've made no effort to become a guitar hero because I can't play the fucking guitar!" -Freddie Mercury. erm grapefruit tók þetta af þinni síðu;)! |

Sebastian 09.01.2005 20:55 |
What Brian said is that Fred composed the heavy part. The riff is Freddie's, in the matter that Fred wrote it. But the riff is played by Brian, of course. |
Canadian May Fan 10.01.2005 08:46 |
You don't have to know how to play the guitar, same as black sabbath did, Ozzuy made some ideas by playing the piano for the actual guitar riff.Agreed -- that's usually how I compose anything! BTW, as for when Freddie mimes in "Princes", it's during the bridge solo, just as the stairs start to collapse. |

Everybody is forgetting "Not Fade Away" which is the reason Fred stopped using the 12 string Ovation & started using the 6 string tele. |

And I didn't want to post "yeah, that song he played twice to introduce CLTCL, you know, that... mmm... yes, that one". I rather waited until somebody who did remember the title pointed it out :) |

Yes but it's better that you gave the full info. Thanks |

I saw the doc on BohRhap and how it tells that Freddie wrote songs backwards in bed. I just didn't let that COMPLETELY rule out the fact that he may have written parts of it on the guitar - as I had previously heard/read. To further Freddie's modesty when it comes to his playing ability, after he says the "Three Chord" bit during concerts, he plays a song with 6 (I think). |
enoky 12.01.2005 17:43 |
I think the whole "backwards" thing is a misunderstanding. John Reid said that Fred sometimes would think of something musical and play backwards, and that he (John) BELIEVED that some passages of Bo Rhap could have started that way. It doesn't mean that Fred wrote songs that way. Those were just throwaway ideas imo, perhaps something he come up with that way ended up being used, but most of his songwriting would be actually sitting at the piano, or taking the guitar or whatever. |
