I was just looking for this on Amazon, and it had this written:
Amazon.com wrote: 1997 reissue of this rare pre-Queen 1969 album for Mercury, digitally remastered from the original master tapes with both sides of the 1976 Warner Brothers 7in for 'The Man FromManhattan' (Original & Back Again) by Eddie Howell with Brian May & Freddie Mercury added as bonus tracks. Eight tracks total. The group Smile features Queen's Brian May andRoger Taylor. A Pseudonym release.
Is the sound quality good, Or is this 'remaster' bull? Either way, I'd love to hear the Smile songs again (I don't have them anymore due to a computer crash) even if they aren't great quality.
The quality IS good.. I was impressed.. If you can't afford to purchase the original Gettin' Smile LP then this is the way to go.. and from what I remember there are no real noticable Vinyl pops... but don't quote me on that.
I have both the original Gettin Smile LP and Ghost of a Smile CD and they both have great sound quality. But, as you know you do get the 2 Eddie Howell tracks on the CD so that might be the one to go for. But then again why not treat yourself to both!
Some of Smile tracks are in stereo and quality is fine, the rest is in mono, but they sounds good as well.
Howell's tracks is in good quality. And besides it contains very good sleeve with some rare Smile photos, note by Tim Staffel, discography of Smile and article from Record Collector.
Very good!
What do you mean: The real thing?
I bought it in the eighties in a normal recordstore.
What's the difference between real / bootleg?
Mine has the jap. inlay and jap.paperband around it.
Ghost Of A Smile was taken from the original master tapes so yes, this is the best possible album with all the Smile songs. Not recorded from vinyl, nor recorded from a second copy but straight from the master tapes.
Ron is correct.
The master tapes were owned by Mercury Records - NOT QP. It was Mercury that licensed the tracks - which were digitally remastered from the existing materials.
This is the fullest - and best there is - get it!
(BTW: Did you notice the acknowledgement to yours truley?)
EVERY BODY VOTE FOR GREATEST VIDEO HITS 3 ON THE WEEKLY POLE. PLEASE. OVER 2 HUNDRED OF THOSE VOTES ARE PROBABLY MINE. I'VE BEEN VOTING ON IT SINCE MONDAY. AND I JUST SPENT 15 MINUITS PRESSING THE VOTE BUTTON FOR GREATEST HITS 3.
Well, I finally got ahold of a copy of the CD! To those of you who told me I should get it, You were right! I love it! Thanks! I also got a copy of the "Gettin' Smile" record thanks to a very good friend of mine. It was so nice to hear these songs again... :D
No, That's okay. Though, I DID make sure to point you out in the booklet to my brother. Kind words only, I assure you. ;)
I had really forgotten how much I enjoyed those songs when I first heard them a few years ago (these are in MUCH better quality though)! I really like "Step On Me, and "Blag" reminded me of Cream.
