i'v noticed outside of queen fans brian may doesn't get enough credit, of course on this board he's going to get plenty of support, but the recent thread, best brian may riffs got me going. all the riffs from stone cold crazy to now i'm hear, and all the rest. just wondering why it's a forgone conclusion that mr. page is known as a better guitar player. the one that gets me is when i see slash's name ahead of brians of all time great guitar players, simply not true, even though slash is a wonderful guitar player, just not as good as Mr. May, and mabe in the near future i'll do one for roger taylor, and he gets very little credit, but that's another story, at least we could all agree fred is the greatest front man in rock history and that includes the beloved robert plant.
i've never understood that either. I listen to Brian's stuff, the sheer quality of it still sound awesome every time. was just looking at a list of "Best Rock gitarists" (below) and Bri's only 23...in a sense it doesnt really matter cos we know he rocks...but i don't get it! link
I think it's because even Queen themselves don't get enough credit. Here in the US, it's all about Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, etc. Queen are almost never mentioned unless it's about Bohemian Rhapsody or We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions. Also, a lot of people think of Queen as being Freddie, which means Brian tends to get overshadowed. I think Roger is definitely underrated as a drummer/singer/songrwiter, too. He's strong in all those aspects, but he's almost never mentioned as one of the great drummers.
thanks for the list, fred came in first in rock singers and Brian 23, i wouldn't go nuts about being 23, i think he should have been a bit better, but there's lot of competition, i believe rolling stone was the one that made me sick, seeing the likes of kurt cobain and joey ramon in the top ten, meanwhile brian may is 39 and eddie van halen almost misses the top 100.
Brian was in the top 20 on that list until about a month ago when they shufled the list and put him at 23. I was pissed off but its not really a serious site because these list tend to change every month or so and its up to the guy who manages the list to choose who goes where. He usually has his favourites so its hard to get a fair list anyway. If a lot of people go to the site and write messages saying they want Brian back in the top 20, I think that it might happen, otherwise forget it.
At least Brian is in the top 30. Roger was 98 in the drummers poll until enough people complained that they moved him to 74. Still I believe that he is way better than that and should be in the top 30 or 40 drummers. The good this is Freddie is #1 male vocalist and #2 rock frontman and Deacy made the top 50 bass players, which is not too bad.
I agree with you on that one.
There seems to be little or no credit to his name, but whenever someone mentions some famous 'Hey' name, people are all over it like flies to shit.
If the whole world listened to every Queen song, especially from Queen-Sheer Heart Attack era, they would have another thing coming when coming to terms with who has some killer guitar moves....
I agree with you Mike Hunt.

Lock your door, but rain is pouring through you window pain....
***But what is cool is that he surpasses so many that are considered great. And look at the side where it has the era's. If you notice, Brian May is in the 70's era among some of the greats. So don't fret over this....it is actually pretty good. Fret over something that doesn't even mention him, or give him any credit. :)
Cheers
The whole riff thing is a little tricky: how's a hero because of a riff, the one who plays it or the one who composed it? If it's the first, and Jonesy would have recorded the riff of Black Dog then he'd be greater than Page? Or if it's the second case, then a lot of "Brian's riffs" don't count as so (like Princes Of The Universe).
I think, personally, that for a fan of certain band or artist they never get enough credit. A Mott fan would complain that All The Young Dudes was #3 and not #1. A Ringo fan would complain he got 3 #1s instead of 4 or 5. A Beatles fan would complain that I Feel Fine was #1 for 5 weeks instead of 6 or more. A Brian May fan would complain he's admired by 60 million of people instead of 600 million. Sad but true
