Hello, I was wondering when was the last time Freddie recorded piano on the studio. I know his last recordings were only vocals, but was he involve in the instrumental recording? for example: A Winter's Tale. |

The track "Delilah" from Innuendo was pretty much done entirely by Freddie using synths, adding Brian's guitar solo at a later date. later Queen material seemed to utilise computer/synth technology as opposed to real piano. Think that the "Forever" (bonus cut on the Magic Cd) was performed by Brian so the last Freddie composition on piano on an Lp would probably be found on "The Works" way back in '84. I would guess that Freddie still used the piano to compose material but the years 89-91 who knows? |

"A new life is born"....you mean Breakthru'?? Good point but to me doesn't have that "real" piano sound. Maybe Greg Brooks knows the answer or bloody jim jenkins ha ha! |

There's a little bit of piano on "Track13" but that doesn't count I think!? Interesting post re: "New life is born" which leads me to my original thought that for 'demo' purposes the piano was still used to nail down ideas. Think that in '89 computer technology still played a part in the overall Queen sound especially if you listen to "was it all worth it" or "invisible man" that have orchestra's and 'beeps', so maybe not that hard to re-create a piano. |

The last keyboard piano arrangement Freddie played was on Mother Love, which was during the guitar solo |

In A Kind of Magic he plays grand piano in Friends will be Friends (it is undoubtly a gran piano sound and it's Freddie style) and keybords on other tracks. I n The Miracle we can listen to the grand piano in Breakthru (A new life is born) and also in Hang on in there ("Let's go let's go"). We must add I Guess we're falling out from the same session (the piano is quite surely by Freddie). In Innuendo there's a lot of piano in All God's people (played by M.Moran). There are also three chords (in arpeggio) in Delilah (I think A min.) and a note at the beginning of Headlong (difficult to say who's the player), and of course a lots of keyboards. In conclusion I think that in the Freddie's song it's possible it's him who plays the most of sinths and electric pianos (so, I'm including also You don't fool me, Mother love and A Winter's tale). PS: Yes, Freddie used piano to compose, even if some of his song were composed on guitar (Great king rat, Crazy little thing and few others). |

On 'AKOM' songs it could be Spike Edney. 'Hang On In There' - yes, it sounds as Freddie's piano-playing style. About 'Innuendo' era I don't know exactly, there is much of synths, but 'Delilah' can has some piano sounds though. |

I go for Mother Love |

But the very last time he played piano was on November 23th 1991. It was just minutes before he wet his pants and laid down on the couch and asked Peter Freestone to shave hiss balls. THAT was the last time he played piano |
Pim Derks 14.11.2004 20:35 |
Wasn't it Dave Stewart he asked ? |
FriedChicken 14.11.2004 20:36 |
Hang on...i'll check the book |

"It was by that time that Freddie called my name and looked straight into my eyes. I could barely hear his voice, but he asked me to roll his wheelchair to his piano for the very last time. When he put his hands on the keys he started to play a very dramatic, but gentle piece. He played it straight from his heart. Right after that he wet his pants and asked me to lay him down on the couch. I walked out of the room with a tear in my eye, knowing this was the very last time I heard Freddie Mercury making music...." |

Let's hope Peter recorded that too, as he did with the first session with Montserrat. I'd love to hear a recording of that! Or maybe Jim videotaped it and will sell the video ? |

Where did you get that FriedChicken? that was my original question, if somebody ever said when was the last time Freddie sat on the piano. It was my first topic on queenzone, and I think for being a newbie I have received positive responses... |
Lisser 14.11.2004 21:26 |
Pim, behave dear. :) |

"Pim, behave dear." I thought that was what you liked about me, my "saying what I think" ? :P |

I do and I like your scarcasm and your sense of humor!! Carry on then and don't forget to put your wooden shoes away. ;) |

As for recordings, if you mean acoustic piano, probably the only tracks of that in Innuendo album are in Headlong (Brian didn't mention it in the list of songs he had played piano on so it must be Fred), and All God's People (Mike). Slightly Mad has some piano at the end as well as Delilah here and there but imo those are digital pianos (Roland RD-1000 to be more precise) as opposed to a grand one. In Miracle there's also grand piano in the title track (easier to notice hearind separate DTS tracks), as well as in Party. In fact that song was started by Fred playing piano and singing "we have a good time". As for keyboards, Jim Hutton said that Fred recorded 'A Winter's Tale' by himself, so the synths are surely him, not the others. He co-wrote the other two tracks from post-Innuendo - Mother Love and You Don't Fool Me - so it's reasonable to think he played the synths in there too. |

<Headlong (Brian didn't mention it in the list of songs he had played piano on so it must be Fred)> Brian could just as well have forgotten to mention Headlong (you've noted Brian's sometimes hazy memory often enough), because the piano-track plays such a minor part in the song. So there's no reason to 100 % beleive that it MUST be Fred. |

Gabriel and Thomas: How do you account for the fact that Spike is credited for extra keyboards on the AKOM album then? |

Holy Cow man.. He is RIGHT, I saw it with me own eyes.. and then I used my Dads eyes.. and it still was there.. AKOM, Extra Keyboards: Spike Edney |

Freddie plays grand piano on It's a beautiful Day from Made in Heaven. Unmistakably his style! So I think he played piano until the near end! |
gabriel79 16.11.2004 14:23 |
a beautiful day is from 1980 |
brENsKi 16.11.2004 14:32 |
in the staff restroom, Tesco's Redditch Superstore last Tuesday, during his lunchbreak by all accounts his rendition of My Fairy king was spot on, but he felt the piano had gone a little out of tune and this showed up more during "good old fashioned loverboy" |
brian_may_wannabe 16.11.2004 14:48 |
Was it him or Brian that did the piano to My Life Has Been Saved? If it was Freddie, that could be his last one. If not, could be It's A Beautiful Day. |
Serry... 16.11.2004 15:18 |
Even if there is a grand piano at 'It's A Beautiful Day' and even if Freddie played it: I'm not sure if it was recorded after 'Hang On In There' etc. |
Sebastian 17.11.2004 03:53 |
Beautiful Day is played by Freddie but it's from 1980. Headlong would be probably the last in the case it was him. My Life Has Been Saved's piano is digital, and is most likely midi-edited rather than played "live". Probably John did it |
