It's decent. The vocals could be a little bit gentler, but good job hitting the higher notes. |
Bohardy 02.09.2004 04:52 |
You'd hope that people would actually check that they've sung the whole song in the same key before submitting their recording to be heard by possibly hundreds of people. I'd like to be able to commend the effort really, but it's pretty much inexcusable to have the singer suddenly lose the key so drastically in the middle of the song and not regain it in the slightest. Disappointing, shall we say. |
Sebastian 02.09.2004 06:50 |
It started off very good, but then it's way off key, and that's something you can't excuse by saying "we don't have millions of dollars worth in equipment" |
deleted user 02.09.2004 09:15 |
Why do people submit this crap? Isn't there anyone who isn't tone deaf that could tell these guys 'don't do it'? I couldn't even listen to the entire song. It was too painful. In short, it was horrid and terrible. This song should be put on containers that need a poison waring.... 'to induce vomiting listen to LOML by Rafael Cortes + MJK' |
Adam Baboolal 02.09.2004 10:14 |
Another great MJK release! We can only hope that, like the last MJK release, it's removed by the author. Yikes... I mean, why?? Ok, safe to say we know the performance was bad. The noise over the guitar and vocal was also bad. And the -singing in my toilet- thing was very annoying! And just one last thing. At the end of your track, please don't say "thank you." :) Did anyone else cringe at that bit? Just one last thing. A good point, no less. The last bit of guitar around the "thankyou" bit was actually decent. Peace, Adam. |
Farlander 02.09.2004 12:42 |
The only thing I can think of was maybe this was live or something? Because otherwise...not so good. Not good even if it were live, but at least it would explain why they couldn't do another take. |
FriedChicken 02.09.2004 13:11 |
Terrific post Adam! |
FriedChicken 02.09.2004 13:11 |
But as Sebastian said, It started off pretty good |

It kinda defeats the point because we already have a good idea of what you'll say.I am not trying to pick on you, Adam, but I ask with all seriousness: Can the same theory that you posted in the Musical thread not be applied here? You do not like MJK's songs, so is there much point in posting? |
Adam Baboolal 03.09.2004 08:08 |
Sorry Zeni, no, it can't. You see, musicals/theater are a genre, but an individual's creative talent in these covers, are their own unique output. And therefore, you never know what you're gonna get with the covers. Like I said, it's not all bad, e.g. the beginning and the end parts. Yes, just a little picky Zeni. But I don't care. :D Peace, Adam. |
Fenderek 03.09.2004 08:25 |
Terrible, sorry... With Adam on that one... |
inu-liger 03.09.2004 18:49 |
I also think it's very bad. Cortes and MJK working together? That's like asking for double the trouble! I'm sorry, but the quality of the song (performance and sound-wise) is absolute shit. I agree with whoever said that people should check that they've sang in the right key for the WHOLE song. And the guitar hardly sounds even like the way Brian plays it live. It seems the person was making it up as he went. And this sounds like it was recorded with Sound Recorder at the lowest setting. Over all, I don't think this merits even 1 out of 5 for a rating. And "thank you" at the end of a song?! I'm sorry, but in my opinion that's just gay Btw. hopefully, like I said a few months ago, I SHOULD be recording "No-One But You" / "Solo Por Ti" (both versions) with my friend Sebastian (not OUR Sebasatian, mind you), sometime in October. I still need someone to play piano and someone to sing Roger's part on the English version. Also, does anyone know where I can download and print out piano chords for NOBY? I would really appreciate some help with this, thanks! |
Ogre 03.09.2004 19:34 |
Shades of Freddies millions and bananaman on this one I think. I do like to hear other people play the lads music (when it's played something like), but this one is a thumbs down for me. |
Adam Baboolal 03.09.2004 22:05 |
Inu, if you're seriously going to record NOBY and it's seriously going to be good - I'll gladly do the Roger part. Peace, Adam. |
SomebodyWhoLoves 04.09.2004 06:40 |
I laughed so hard listening to it. And reading the comments here is also very funny. I feel sorry for Rafael but the whole thing is very comical. |
Rick 04.09.2004 10:53 |
Damn, is this singing? It's crap. I laughed at first, but its actually pure shite. |
Zander05 04.09.2004 13:04 |
Word of the wise to anyone attempting to do any cover - YOU NEED TO BE TALENTED! It's not called The Stage of Champions for the f*ck of it! |
Lester Burnham 04.09.2004 13:47 |
While I never really paid attention to most of the fan covers, the reaction this one got piqued my interest. So I checked it out, and while it's not the greatest performance in the world, it's also not the worst. I reckon most of the people here who have such harsh words against it have some of their own stellar performances to share, hm? |
BornToBeKings 04.09.2004 14:25 |
So that's what it would sound like if the unholy offspring of Billie Joe Armstrong and Ricky Martin recorded a version of LOML. However, it still doesn't top the entertainment value of the Special Olympics All-Stars on MJK's rendition of WWRY. |
NoOneButMe 05.09.2004 22:37 |
Well, guys, it is so good to know your "expert" comments about this version, but I think this goes ahead all of you, talented instrument players and singers. This was a collaboration between two fans that love Queen music and would like to do something to show their loyalty for the group; I know, this is not the best performance ever, but I really know that was done with the heart of a real Queen fan. Yes, it started so good with a recording of an instrumental version of LOML and then recording the lyrics over the guitar. Yes, it is a proyect between two Queen fans from different countries that joined their love for the group to show the rest of you that there are things that can be done when you want to do something with love. Yes, we are not professional guitarist player or singer, but, what I surely know is that we are PROFESSIONAL QUEEN FANS. So this is a result from two guys that just wanted to hear their limited but sincerely and true talents without the use of any software, hardware and millions of dollars in equipment as most of the songs submitted in the stage are recorded, I think. We don´t want to get the Ivor Novello or Grammy Award fot the best song in the Stage of Champions. In fact, there are no limitations on the quality of the songs that must be uploaded here or for selecting the songs that would be in the final track list of an official Queenzone CD. So I think that if your critics go over the effort of some other fans to upload a song here, then you are disturbing the goal of joining a great group of Queen fans from all over the world, with different views of the music we´ve been hearing for so many years. I like almost all the versions that are uploaded here, our rendition does not have less merits than yours, but with all that talent you breath away I encourage you to record a new track, with a multi country support and surprise us, the less "talented" fans with a professional recording, if you can. We have done the first step. By the way, this song was recorded before The Stage of Champions was createad, so we did not want to be the best song, we just recorded it for fun and FRIENDSHIP, and now we want to share it with the rest of the Queen fans that would appreciate this effort. Finally, if you are starting a competition of the best song over here, then you must show the rules and then start talking and criticising our work, not before. Thanks a lot to Richard for this space and uploading our work. Thanks to MJK for asking me to record his voice over my guitar. Thanks to all the Queen fans that would acept this work as PROFESSIONAL QUEEN FANS. Sincerely but sadly.... RAFAEL CORTES |
Sebastian 06.09.2004 04:30 |
I personally don't believe in talent. Could the singer do the whole thing good if he tried? absolutely. Then why didn't he? I mean, I don't mean you have to step up the Extreme or the Queen or the Scorpions version. But, to have it all sung in the correct key would be totally acceptable. The way it is, it's not |
Farlander 06.09.2004 05:36 |
You think most Stage of Champions entries are recorded with millions of dollars worth of equipment? More like hundreds of dollars, I'm sure. |

NoOneButMe wrote: we did not want to be the best song, we just recorded it for fun and FRIENDSHIP, and now we want to share it with the rest of the Queen fans that would appreciate this effort.Yeah, I think that's a worthy reason for having recorded it. Nothing wrong with that. Besides, Rafael, I think your guitar playing on it was good. . . Though, I doubt the other covers were recorded with big budgets. . . and it might be a good to keep in mind that posting your cover for public scrutiny might get you comments you didn't want to hear. |
deleted user 06.09.2004 08:17 |
"Yeah, I think that's a worthy reason for having recorded it. Nothing wrong with that. Besides, Rafael, I think your guitar playing on it was good." Um, the guitar playing was not good. I'm not the best in the world either, but this was all around badly done. Thanks for sharing it though. And I'm glad you made new friends while doing it. :) |
NoOneButMe 06.09.2004 13:30 |
Thanks for your answers. I know that most of the songs here are not recorded even with hundreds of dollars in equipment, but sometimes the comments people do seems that they have it. Well, I think there are some kind comments that may imporve our work for future songs, maybe some of this guys can share their experience and tips with other fans and perhaps, make some new good fan friends from overseas.... See you!!! RC |

OK. Here is some consrtuctive ideas for you. 1. Make sure the guitar is in tune. 2. Make sure you layer the tracks so that the voice and the guitar are in line with eachother. 3. Sing a song that your voice can handle while sounding good. Don't sing falsetto. Not many people can do it well. 4. Use the best possible program you can while being able to afford it. That makes a difference, as does learing how to use it right. 5. Perfect what you are doing by practicing it first, and practice often. The only way you are going to sound good is if you do that. 6. Above all else, have fun with what your doing. Don't put too much expectations or pressure on yourself. That just helps ruin the music. If you would like, you can email. Just have fun! |
Adam Baboolal 06.09.2004 18:16 |
The first thing you learn when posting your work is that it will gather opinions both good and bad. You have to expect it. Btw, it doesn't matter what you record with. It's all down to the performance in the end. Peace, Adam. |

"Inu, if you're seriously going to record NOBY and it's seriously going to be good - I'll gladly do the Roger part. Peace, Adam." Hi Adam! Sorry I took so long to reply! (I'm starting to become more like Brian these days, LOL!) Sure, if you want to, you can sing on NOBY! I'm actually thinking of getting Bob (Wagner) to play guitar on it too, because he DID say earlier when I asked him, that he would be more than pleased to play guitar on our Queen songs. (All I need to worry about on my end is finding time to record the drum tracks at school, and bass track at home - the latter which will be a bit difficult, considering the last string broke a long time ago, and I cannot afford a new one atm.!) I may use a different version for here at school though, because I want to make a version with a video for the year end graduation video, as a tribute to a well-known retired teacher who passed away a few months ago - not that I'd known him myself, but I think it would be fitting. I've yet to talk to my friend Sebastian about making a video, actually! We haven't even recorded our version yet! And I still need a piano player too. Adam, can you by any chance play the piano at all? |
Adam Baboolal 14.09.2004 08:51 |
Hey Inu. Good to see that you're still thinking on this one. Well, I can play piano bits fine. I'll re-check my old demo of it. I guess I can learn it and be more accurate. Btw, I'm actually recording my mate's band today and tomorrow. He'll definitely be leaving his drums here overnight, so I could do something here too. Yes? No? It's a shame you're in the US cause otherwise I'd leave it to you. Anyway, I'll try recording some drums to a piano track that I'll put together. Just for my own amusement. :) Peace, Adam. |

Just for my own amusement. :) Peace, Adam.Drums are no problem. My school's music room is actually going to be a part-time recording studio as well, and the school owns a set of drums. Naturally, because I'm also taking the new Composition and Studio Recording program this year, I'll be able to put together a drum track with no problems! I'll have to dig out my bass guitar sometime and print out some tabs for this song if I can find any! Ha ha! How about this, Adam? The drums are going to be exactly the same as the original version (on Queen Rocks), so you can make a piano track based on the exact one from that version as well. Or if you want to wait until the end of the month, I'll put the basic drum, bass and vocal track together, send you a CD-R of it, and then you can add the piano and your vocal(s) to it, and send it all back to me (multitracked) on CD-R. Then you can send it to Bob here (assuming I can get his address off of him - he knows me, so hopefully it shouldn't be a problem, since he also wants to play guitar on our covers), and he can do the guitar parts, and also send it back to me on a multitracked CD-R, and then I'll do my harmonies and make the final mix, then proceed to make the stereo master and the 5.1 version afterwards. I have some new technology for making mixes with multitracks now, on my PC, so mixing should not be a problem for me (as long as I can get the crack for my program before the trial ends at the end of this month - the program being Adobe Audition 1.5, in which I need the program to enter the registration code for before the end) Let me know what you think, Adam, and I'll start the track as soon as I can! |
Adam Baboolal 16.09.2004 11:01 |
Well, I was going to use the drums here anyway and do a piano track that way. I'll still do what I'm planning, but I'll gladly redo a different one for your track. If you do transcribe the bass tab, could you forward a copy to me? And could I be the last to add my stuff to the track? I'd also like a bash at mixing it. And about your mixing... Please remember that it's not just about putting the track together and slapping chorus and reverb on it. I still remember your midi remix samples. Find some reading material about mixing and that should work. Peace, Adam. |

That was made using a 2-track program though - I have a multitrack program which can go up to about 70 (mono or stereo) tracks at once. But I'll let you have a shot at mixing it too, if you really want to :) Also, it may be about two months before I can get any studio time at school, because I talked to my music teacher today. I'm guessing it's because we have to learn a lot about the Pro Tools and PT-related programs we're using in Studio & Composition...hmmm..... ANYways, I will let you know once I've got something together, unless of course you'd like to do a piano and drum track now and send it to me, so I can add my stuff, send it to Bob, then send it to you, and you know the rest :P It's up to you! :) |

The main problem is that the song was started on a very high key and when he tried to lower the voice key, it sounded out of tune with the guitar and he lost it.The guitar playing sounded nice. I would like to submit a song, people say I sing very well, but unfortunately I don't play an instrument. |
Adam Baboolal 19.09.2004 21:06 |
Well, I've recorded some temp stuff for LML, i.e. guide piano, bass, guide vocal and some minimal drums by my friend. Actually, my brother asked me if I had any tracks that needed drums and I mentioned this one. He says he'll take a look and get back to me. If possible, it could be recorded next weekend. So, I'm sending off my drummer friend and his kit! I'm very happy at this cause my bro's a great drummer. Dare I say it, much better than my friend. Anyway, it's started. So, let's hope it really does happen cause I'm interested to see and hear the results. Peace, Adam. P.S. Maybe we should start a new thread for this? |
