OK, OK, the movie Ella Enchanted was not even on my radar screen until tonight, when I was waiting in a Chinese TakeOut restaurant doorway for my dinner to be cooked. They had some kind of special on Ella Enchanted on the TV (here in the US, anyway). I did my best to ignore it... until I started hearing Anne Hathaway singing "Somebody To Love"! I nearly choked! Not that it's all that bad, mind you, it's quite good, honestly. The bits I heard were respectfully faithful to the original, right down to the long, descending vocal flourish toward the end. And she has a lovely voice... I was completely Unoffended!!! Unbelievable!
So the main character must be love-hungry in the movie, I suppose... in order to justify having the words come out of her mouth rather than Freddie's. Anyway...
I love this song, always have, and it's great to hear it honored in this way, especially since it will be heard by young audiences who will one day realize that there's another version, even better, sung by the author himself.
