I posted a topic about spyware, and I suppose I could've asked this on there. However I decided to devote another whole topic to myself and my problems. This is a dillemma, which I hope you guys can help me on (doubt it, but it's worth a try):
My old computer: Windows 98, veeeery slow startup (I always get to tidy up my desk and around my bed and then read two pages of a book before it's all up and running). After I downloaded the new version of Yahoo messenger, the thing started acting weird and now it will sometimes restart immediately if I press any links on the messenger. Internet often gets stuck, too. However when I just get it to work in the first place, it has a OK speed (for me) and it runs the programs OK most of the time. It's just very very annoying the days it totally gets stuck and I have to restart over and over (each time waiting forever for it to run again) and lately this has happened more often than it did before.
New computer: Has Windows XP, a very fast startup, is very fast as a whole, loads faster, no problems with restarting, very nice as a whole. Minus: The fan in it makes a horrible sound (it has been replaced once, but it still makes the sound because a certain size and type of fan is needed). And I mean horrible. When we had this computer downstairs it was in the kitchen. Yet mom and dad would turn it off because it annoyed them when they were in the livingroom. The three days I tried this computer, I heard the humming from when I entered the hall outside my room, and inside you could really hear a machine was working. It was hard to focus on any reading I might do with my computer on, I think it gave me headaches and when I switched off the computer I could still "hear" the sound in my head for long. With fear of going insane, I switched back to the good old safety three days later - but now the safety is gone and my good old computer is getting... not so good, just old.
So, both computers are very annoying. Question: Given the choice, which would you pick and why?
Well, we tried replacing the fan and the new one was just as bad. I doubt dad will give it another try, he's rarely open to suggestions because he thinks he always knows better. I also suggested selling both computers and get a new one, and he said no. I'll bring it up again, though, as he gave me no real reason why we shouldn't.
Anyway, it seems everyone is for the new one, so probably I'll take that one and learn to deal with the sound. Much of my dislike for the new one probably origins in how I dislike all changes and cling to the old stuff even when it's totally outdated. :-)
hi
if it were me i would use the new one but also fit your hard drive with windows 98 in it, then you can have a choice and use your hard drive with 98 on it to play games as i have a pc with xp and most of my favourite games wont run on it. You'll be able to get more on your 98 drive because your xp one will have all the stuff you would have put on the 98 one-also formatting your 98 hard drive may help, try defragmenting it first so you can see if there are bad sectors, it sounds as if yahoo is conflicting with another programme, i have found it conflicts with Aol and ICQ, i had problems like yours then uninstalled aol and icq and they worked fine-also do a virus check to see what comes up.
FF
Thanks FF, your theory on why Yahoo messes up might be true. Maybe MSN interferes with it. Pity I don't want to uninstall either :-S
As I'm a computer idiot, I really just pick a guess when I say we changed the fan over the processor. To be honest I thought there was only one fan. What I know is that the fan which we need to cool down the processor (according to how dad explained it), makes one hell of a noise and that's the one we replaced.
