Brian's sweet sister 08.02.2004 07:38 |
I love this beautiful song sung so well by Brian but all the high notes I hear in this are they actually sung by Freddie? Or does Brian sing some too...I'm confused? I always thought it sounded as though Brian sung it all but then soemone said that Freddie sung the :"Hot child that you know you're young you got your whole life ahead of you but IIII" (High note)bit. I always thought it was Brian but when I listenrd to it closeley it did sound a bit like Freddie. Could you please help me on finding out who sings what parts exactly in this song please cos I am really confused? |
David Jones 08.02.2004 09:01 |
The "Hot child" is Freddie. Brian sings the rest. |

It always amazes me when I hear stuff like that! Not being able to tell Freddie sings on that track!? Whoa... |

Many many people used to think Brian did the falsetto part just because Brian sang falsetto the "anytime" of Killer Queen on stage. And in that part Roger was doing the high voice and Brian the "low" part (around A3). Inclusive I remember people telling me that Brian sang the intro of '39 and screamed in 'Lap Of The Gods' based just in the fact that the camera focused on him during 'anytime' at the concert for the people of Kampuchea |

What I mean is that I met many people who thought Brian was the "soprano" of the band just because they had downloaded some parts of the kampuchea concert (from here I think) and during Killer Queen the camera focused on Brian during 'anytime'. During the first months of my site I received mails from fans telling me that Brian was the one who sang the intro of ITLOTG and '39 and the middle eight of SASS |

Sail Away Sweet Sister is such a good song! One of my favorites. |

Ahh, i understand. It's the same old story with John singing backing vocals, because he opens his mouth in the videos |

> It's the same old story with John singing backing vocals, because he opens his mouth in the videos That's a very good point. I understand people who think John sang ocassionally in the albums (because I'm one of them), but I don't get why most of them (us) think John sings the bassnotes of 'Somebody To Love' and 'Bicycle' |

This is a great song of Brian's. Probablly my favorite of all the tracks he took the lead vocal on. But freddie sounds amazing on the middle eight here. That high note he hits has to be one the highest he ever recorded. The "Why" in UP is another great one as well. On Brian's "Live from Hamburg, 98" he performs this song during the encores. Neither he nor his back up singers attempt to sing the middle eight. They only come in on "Way too soon, Ah..." |

I think that John (!) did backing vocals in Radio Ga Ga live. It's either him or Spike. There's definately a 4th voice. |
FriedChicken 10.02.2004 06:37 |
"John, on Wembley, actually sings NUMEROUS times! Ga-Ga, Tear it Up, Lap of the Gods! GO, johnny, GO!!" Thats Spike, not John |
Sebastian 10.02.2004 07:24 |
He did sing on stage, according to what he said in a Japanese magazine "In the studio it's mostly Roger, Freddie and Brian doing all the harmonies. I barely participate. On stage I sing little backing vocals but I can't call myself a singer" |
Fenderek 10.02.2004 08:03 |
Well- we all know that he was singing on stage... One thing though- his mic was off... |
Sebastian 10.02.2004 08:41 |
It wasn't off, but the volume was minimal compared to the guitars, piano, drums, bass and Fred's & Roger's voices. Note that in the 80s Brian's mic was also very quiet |
Fenderek 10.02.2004 08:54 |
< You're right- noticed it many times but somehow didn't think of it... And was only joking with the John's one being off.... There's a different thing though- what kind of a sick bustard allowed the Spike's mic to be on...? |
Sebastian 10.02.2004 13:23 |
I don't think Spike has a bad voice, but I agree that his timbre doesn't match in the Queen context |

I thought Roger was responsible for the falsetto harmonies. Brian points out that Roger was able to sing higher and hold the note longer on BoRhap during the "let him go" line. I think Roger was the screamer and definately during concerts as well. Just watch the "We Will Rock You" concert from 1982. Brian is barely audible and Roger's voice will not be denied! And not just that concert, but any others you watch especially from the 80's. |
Farlander 10.02.2004 20:21 |
Yeah, I have often wondered about that. It seems 99% of the vocals in concert were done by Freddie (duh) and Roger. Brian has a mic, but he rarely used it, and when he did, it was way low in the mix. (Obviously it depends on what show, but in general.) Why? Brian had a good voice, and did great vocal work in the studio. I can certainly understand why he would not be able to sing too much - he had a lot to do trying to play all the important guitar bits with one guitar, and probably singing would have been too hard to do while playing a lot of those parts. But while he was singing, why not turn him up? It would have made things a bit fuller. |
Sebastian 10.02.2004 20:22 |
Roger wasn't always responsible for that. Many many times Freddie did all the harmonies by himself, and in some cases Roger was there too but Fred was in the highest voice (e.g. Doin' All Right). The case of "let me go" is, I guess, because Freddie preferred Roger's voice timbre and color for that part |
Sebastian 10.02.2004 20:26 |
> Brian had a good voice, and did great vocal work in the studio. But he had less pitch (I mean Fred and Roger were able to hit the right notes more than Brian). > I can certainly understand why he would not be able to sing too much - he had a lot to do trying to play all the important guitar bits with one guitar Most of times the guitar parts were simplified compared to the studio versions. The drum parts were amplified and Roger still could sing > And probably singing would have been too hard to do while playing a lot of those parts. He could do that, but in many cases the mic was very quiet |
Lester Burnham 10.02.2004 20:31 |
Somewhat off topic, but did Brian ever sing lead vocals on a song live while with Queen? |
Sebastian 10.02.2004 21:46 |
yes he did, in 'Hello Mary Lou' |
Daburcor? 10.02.2004 22:08 |
I love 'Sail Away Sweet Sister'. Brian has a great voice in my opinion. |
Lester Burnham 10.02.2004 22:15 |
Ah yes, but is that the ONLY instance? |
Sebastian 11.02.2004 06:14 |
The "no I just think I'm two steps nearer to my grave" was sung by Brian & Freddie together. But perhaps in pre-73 concerts it was only Brian, who knows... |
MercuryArts 11.02.2004 12:36 |
Somtimes John's could be heard. If you listen to STL from the Earls Court show he can clearly be heard as the 4th voice during the choir interlude. I'm not saying he's very good, but he can be heard. Also how about all the times they did Liar, during the "Momma gonna be your slave, (chorus: all day long). Any video I have of this John is singing right into Freddie's mic w/ him but he's hard to hear. Do you think he just mouthed the words for effect? I wouldn't think he'd do that. |
Wayne Gretzky 11.02.2004 12:42 |
He also sang "a cold wind blows, and a dark rain falls" in One Vision. |
Sebastian 11.02.2004 15:11 |
Yes in fact Brian sang that part |
Matti 11.02.2004 18:22 |
Brian has a lovely voice! |
Brian's sweet sister 12.02.2004 19:08 |
Brian has a gorgeous voice in all his songs. His voice melts my heart especiallyt in '39 and all dead all dead. But I have to say 'Too much love will kill you' didn't really cut the mustard if you know what I mean. |
