I had a situation pertaining to this topic I would like to put out there to other Queen fans. My simple question is how does Roger Taylor treat his fans. I'm not talking about in public in front of crowds or cameras. I'm talking about people who have either met him in public by happenstance or other fan venues. While the question is simple, my reason for asking it is not. I'd like to explain why. Last year I did a painting of Queen. The final painting took 7 months studio time and 375 total hours. The painting is huge in size and is full of hidden meanings that reference Queen's legacy in rock and roll history. Each member of Queen is depicted specially according to who they are as individuals and there are over 30 Queen songs hidden in the piece. It will absolutely be the painting that defines my career. Here's link to the painting if you want to see it. link I promoted the progressive work on the painting on all my social media outlets. When I finally finished it, I was given the heads up that Brian May saw it and called it, "epic" and said, "Somebody has painted the Queen Masterpiece." I don't want to go into specifics about who my contacts were just to protect their privacy. After Brian saw it and showed it to Roger, I found out that I would be able to leave 3 copies backstage before the Queen concert in Phoenix on July 16, 2019. I had no word if I would be able to present them to Queen personally or just leave them with an assistant. I had three high-quality canvas prints made for Roger, Brian, and Adam. I even did original over paints on all three copies so they would be mini originals on their own. I bought each of them a greeting card with a special note. I even gave Brian and Roger birthday cards that sang, "We Will Rock You." when you opened them (both their bdays are in July) In addition I printed out a fact sheet that explained the painting in great detail. There are over 30 Queen easter eggs hidden in the piece. I encourage you to see the painting. link News picked up story as well: link So on July 15, the day before the concert, I packed my bags and drove 11 hours from Santa Fe to Phoenix to go to the concert and leave copies of my painting for the band. Let me backtrack and say, the whole reason I did the painting was to honor the legacy of Queen but also because I was CRAZY WILD for Roger Taylor. I so adored him and was such a huge fan that I was determined to meet him. I'm not good at a lot of things, but what I do have faith in, is my art. I felt in my heart of hearts that I could create a painting that would be so good that it would get his attention. So my heart and soul really went into that painting to honor him and what he meant to me as his fan. The night before the concert I got notification from Brian May's assistant that he would be happy for me to present him his copy PERSONALLY before the Queen concert. I can tell you I LOST MY MIND!!! I couldn't even believe it. I barely slept all night. That next evening at 6:45 pm I stood in line with about 20 NASA scientists who were all waiting to meet Brian. The assistant came out of the door and did a roll call. Then, she finally said, "Who's my painting lady?" I raised my hand and she said, "He wants to see you first. The rest of you will go in in threes and fours." I was the only fan that night that got a one on one personal meeting with Brian. We snaked in a line following the assistant backstage and were lined up outside of a door to wait. I stood there at the head of the line in complete disbelief that after 7 mos. work and 375 hours there I was about to meet Brian May. NOTE: just before I went in the room the assistant brought me a note written with fresh silver sharpie on a piece of copy paper. It was still wet! It was a note graciously and kindly thanking me from Adam Lambert for his copy of the painting. I regretfully folded it up and put it in my back pocket wanting my hands free to meet Brian. Before I knew it, the door opened and I was lead inside. It was a simple room with a couple of couches caddy-corner and a coffee table. I looked in front of me, nothing. Looked to my right, nothing. Then a turned my head to the left and standing there up against the wall with his hands behind his back looking as nervous and shy as I was, was BRIAN EFFING MAY! I'd liked to have died. He laughed shyly when he saw me and held his arms out to me. I ran into them and I guess I hugged him too tight because he laughed and said, "wow! your're a good hugger!" I released him embarrassed and then he said, "no, no, it's okay." and hugged me again. Then he asked me to show him the painting and I did. After that his assistant took a couple of pictures of us which I'll cherish for the rest of my life. Then, he actually asked me what he could do for me. The assistant left all of my Queen memorabilia in a bag behind the stage so I didn't even have anything for him to sign. So I asked if I could have a bit of video with him. The assistant immediately said, "no" and then Brian said, "No, she deserves time with me." I handed her my phone and hit the record button. She supposedly filmed us. Brian just stood there with his arm around me and kissed me on the head twice. After he thanked me so kindly and told me "You know what you are awesome!" to which I dumbly replied, "No, you're awesome!" Then, I walked out the door on cloud nine (BTW the assistant didn't hit play and I got no video of him kissing my head only video of my leaving the room grrrrrrrrr!) Whatever you positive and good you think about Brian May, times it by a thousand! He was gentle, kind, loving, gracious, intelligent, genuine, lovely and a true English gentleman. In a nutshell, I fell in love with the man instantly. Now FINALLY to the point, forgive me. I walked out of that room and took a pause reevaluating the situation. Adam wrote me beautiful thank you. BRIAN MAY, rock god, actually put me ahead of 20 NASA scientists to thank me personally and make me feel special for like 7 minutes and WHERE THE HELL WAS ROGER TAYLOR??? I didn't mention this before, but I used that painting to cope through my son's cancer. My son has a rare form of cancer that we're still fighting today. I wrote that very fact on the back of the paintings so all three of them knew about it. One of my followers texted me a picture of Roger Taylor partying with that has-been jerk Carrot Top the same exact time I was meeting with Brian May. DId Queen ask me to do that painting? No. Did Queen ask me to spend $1300 on concert tickets? No. Or another $1,000 for travel expenses and canvas prints? No. NO. NO! The point is this. I wasn't just any Queen fan. I wasn't some rich little biotch who's daddy knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone so I could meet Queen. I put every ounce of admiration, labor and love into that painting for 7 months straight. WHAT IS MY POINT? To the crux of the situation. If there was EVER a time for Roger Taylor to acknowledge a fan, this was it. I didn't really expect Roger to be in the room with Brian (hoping, yes, expecting no) But why couldn't he have done as Adam did and taken less than 2 minutes to scratch, "Thank you, love Roger Taylor" For all I know he threw that painting aside. I wrote all of my contact information on the back of his painting so if he wanted to thank me he could have very easily. And yes, he was on tour and busy, but so were Adam and Brian and they both went out of their way to acknowledge me. I will NEVER forget that Brian May took out of his time to make a little nobody fan like me feel special. I'll never forget it and Brian will have a fan in me FOREVER. In th |

Very cute style.i find that very refreshing and honest. Congrats on getting their attention. That's very sweet. Aside from that i truly have no idea. Maybe it was a prior engagement. People less different lives. But I've always found Brian to be likely more appreciative of the fan fondness. Maybe Roger is like the late Neil Peart and doesn't wish to engage people he doesn't know. I would not speculate. The one time I'd been aroundRoger he seemed more appreciative of the fellow fellows appreciation. Jockish. I'm not saying the man has any obligation but what a valued but of memory to have. Very thoughtful and bold of you to do what you did. |

I don't really understand why you focus on not getting to meet Roger when Brian gave you all that time and attention. That is a real "glass half empty" way to look at the world. Also, Carrot Top is way funnier than people give him credit for. |

I’d have had no expectations from any of them... Roger doesn’t seem the sentimental type about those things anyways. He’s spent most of his life being a celebrity and enjoys living it up. Brian’s more sentimental and acknowledges the fans more... Roger’s more the type to ask a female fan what she’ll be doing after the show. |

I have met Roger he was very kind and willing to approach me and other fans. Maybe you were not at the right timing. Since he has a team to do his work and has other things in his minnd, he forgot. Not good behavior anyway. |

The original plan was to execute Carrot Top on stage as a sacrifice to Fred's Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda but it was vetoed by one of the sponsors. Hopefully they were able to do it privately instead. Lovely painting btw. |

Mister cosmic has a point. I believe Brian would be the archivist of the band. Him and maybe folks at the fan club would keep that for maybe an interactive archive someday ;) (*all but the nude Polaroid s the gals may have thrown onstage through out their career) I know if they keep such things that he's got a drawing of mine that i had barely finished before a signing. John might just appreciate a pack of smokes ;) |

No need to ascribe personality traits to someone whom you've never met because he didn't feel like signing the umpteenth autograph and engage in small talk with people he'll never see again. No matter how many of these stories we hear, it's still a tiny sample size. Rock stars meet tens of thousands of strangers over the decades - something most of us will never be able to relate to. Touring musicians put their bodies and minds through hell for months at a time so that their fans can have fun for two hours. They don't owe anyone anything beyond that. Anything else is a bonus. It seems rock stars become "miserable twats" only when we begin with a sense of entitlement to their time beyond what they've already given us, but most people don't think about it that way. |

@PaintingQueen I wouldn't take it too personally. Come on, you got a personal audience with Brian, that's a lot. If Roger was out partying, so what? I don't want to sound insensitive and I truly appreciate your story behind it, but really, I think you got a lot of appreciation for your work. Roger always came across to me (in interviews) as very down to earth, factual, I really wouldn't read too much into it. Btw. it's an interesting painting, not Picasso of course and Brian looks a bit like a guy from Mars Volta or something, while Freddie is too smooth looking, but interesting regardless. All the best. |

Congrats to your beautiful painting and so sorry to hear about your child's cancer ! I hope you'll cherish your 1st class encounter with BM which is not taken for granted. As for your question regarding RT : There must be hundreds of fans who have met RT , or thousands hoping to meet him. Lots of girls :) --- I met RT (and JD) in 1984 after a concert at a bar...am not going to elaborate too much, it's your story, not mine. While JD was totally down to earth , RT had some slightly arrogant rockstar attitude about him , superficially polite, but still... THE rockstar eyeing available girls. Maybe I was also annoying as it must have been crystal clear I was disappointed ( My idol forever was FM and I had several opportunities to meet, just not that evening) . So to hang out with rockstar RT and JD was ...dare I say ? Boring. ---Please take it easy, these guys meet so many people. ---Maybe he had another appointment, or as cruel as it sounds... forgotten ? --- This said, your painting is beautiful and your sons' suffering is so, so much more important than meeting a rock star ! |

First off you're painting is stunning you are very talented!! you should of said you we're a celebrity and o'l Rog would of made plenty of time for you, just look at his lack of interviews and when he does give an interview it's a few mumbles as if he can't be arsed. I agree with you're disappointment he could of made an effort for a hug and thank you 40sec for a fan who did that painting, it's not like there was fifty fans waiting to meet him, good for Brian making an effort, as Freddie once said I wouldn't have a huge house and wealth if it was not for fans, look at the fuss Metallica make of their fans etc. even AL made time in between his corset and high heels fitting. #QueenCrapSocks :O) |
Freddie Jupiter 07.03.2020 08:09 |
Maybe roger didn't want to see you because you made him look like a poof :) But seriously, I sense that Brian desperately wants to be loved and admired, which is why he often goes out of his way to meet with the fans, do the whole hug thing etc, whereas roger doesn't really give a shit. Either that, or he had some other commitment. |

Wow. Fair and balanced (no sarcasm) from moog. Things HAVE changed. Yeah i wasn't going to say anything. But it's a be grateful for whatever happened bit. Although there ARE times when Taylor seems like he could GAF. But sometimes it could be concerning security, could be concerning a flight plan. Could be he's high as a kite and doesn't want to disappear. Could be anything. (*after events) Regarding THAT particular show. Who knows. Dude prob had plans. Brian had plans as well- which would be apparent with NASA /JPL folks around. It's a desert zone and the skies are more clear for the field. It's all a different beast. Just consider the negativity you received right now. Then multiply it by capacity seating *(giving them the benefit of the doubt) and in hindsight u might note it could be an entirely unrealistic ideal to EXPECT a response. Glad you got one. Sorry you feel slighted. Things happen like that. Jane Fonda for instance picked up my pick guard and pen then stated "oh, ...i can't do this right now. Now that was out of an entire movie theatre after she'd done a post film Q&A . I had an ESCAPADE magazine from the 60's that featured her but didn't bring it because it smelled like the 1960's (and few of that issue are in good condition) I wondered wth might have been the reason but ultimately well. Who knows. Still. I plan to continue project Fondarella (painted custom guitar project) As it may not have been pointed out. Roger didn't exactly SLIGHT you either. They have no obligation to respond to fan inquiries. It was very genuine of Brian to do so. Or maybe you're very good looking (for a mom ;) ) But I'm sorry to hear about your child's illness. Thatcanbe an overwhelming thing. I hope you and your own manage to nip it in the bud somehow. |

I've had better experiences meeting Roger than Brian. He's a long post with my experiences, in case anybody cares, Haha ?? Saw Brian twice on the same day, before and after the show in Prague 2005. He was gracious enough to stop for about 10-15 people and sign some stuff both times. After the show I could see he was annoyed that we were there and made a gesture, a bit of a shrug like saying "aw crap, here we go again". The third time I saw him was as he was leaving his hotel in NYC before the rehearsal for the Global Citizen Festival 2019. He wasn't planning on stopping as he was in a hurry but a friend managed to position himself between Brian and his car so he inevitably stopped for 8 seconds or so. Brian was not pleased and just kept saying he couldn't stop and he was in a hurry. So I haven't received the well- known Brian-fan quality time that lots of people Roger was nice both times I met him. Same day in Prague 2005, he signed a few people's tickets and programs and he was leaving right before it was my turn. I whined outloud "Aw man, I came all the way from Mexico to see you" and he stopped and said to his bodyguard that he would "just sign this guy's" (referring to me) and came back walking directly to sign my program. Very nice. Fast forward to 2019 in NYC he was coming out of his hotel with his wife and his daughter Lola. He stopped, signed about 5 autographs or so and, as he was doing that, he was reacting to and acknowledging what people said. Politely and trying to seem interested, even if he was obviously in a hurrying. I told him I loved his Fun In Space album and that I thought he should play it live some time. He grinned widely, without looking at me, as I said that. He signed my Japanese Let's Get Crazy 8" single and then turned to me to say "I can't remember it" (Fun in Space) and very briefly he looked toward me to share a laugh for half a second or so. Great, brief yet authentic experience. |

^yeah. Something that others can't seem to consider or acknowledge is that these guys are pretty old and yeah....though they've only a handful of albums. They might forget a lot of this stuff. Same experience with some actors over 70. Yet others have great recall....probably depends on howactive their lifestyle is...and hopefully quality of their mind. Far too many things to factor in. Thanks for the share. Evens things up. Still lucky for them that people admire their work. At least it's admiration based on substance - unlike a lot of fame whores that exist these days |
