It occurred to me watching The Freddie Mercury tribute concert on Dvd what the hell some artist's where there for like Lisa Stansfield, Paul Young, Def Leppard, Axl Rose, Slash, i mean those people were not in Freddie's circle of friends. The likes of Cliff Richard, Dave Clark , Montserrat & Peter Straker had more in common with Freddie and should have been there, It seems to me Brian got his favourite mates over for that concert and he did not honour Freddie properly. The Royal Ballet would also have been a nice touch too to Freddie's day too. Selfish Brian all over again in my opinion. What do you all think? |

refreshing to see a topic which has hardly been discussed before :) :) sarcasm aside - there are most likely several LONG threads on the forum already if you do a quick search |

Yeah I've said this many times. It was very hair pop metal heavy which I just didn't associate with Queen. But also tickets innit. Luckily the mixture of artists doing the collabs later on was better. That said, the line up of bands I would've liked to have seen was exactly zero. |
pittrek 23.11.2019 16:30 |
It was broadcast worldwide, of course they had to bring musicians with worldwide appeal. |
FlorianS 23.11.2019 18:29 |
Most of the artists claimed, that they were influenced by Queen. Like Def Leppard, Guns and Roses, Metallica etc. The Concert was a Tribute to Freddie and never labeled as "Freddies Friends on stage". You would hardly get one Billion people watching the show on TV with Peter Straker and Montserrat. Allthough I personally would have loved to see Billy Squire on the stage on that day. |
Stick 23.11.2019 20:20 |
It kinda was The Freddie Mercury Tribute concert by Brian May and friends. The setlist was also quite heavily influenced by that fact. |
Nathan H 23.11.2019 20:44 |
You've got to remember availability or whether wanted to perform at all. The songs chosen were by the artists for most of them. |
Star* 23.11.2019 21:49 |
I honestly think more people would have wanted a more personal approach to this concert i.e real friends of Freddie's sure we had Elton John but were was Rod Stewart? Barbara Valentin would have been a joy to watch too and also not even a speech from Mary Austin but errr she would take Fred's mansion and the money. Sadly the show was more about Brian's heavy rock mates than Freddie's. Freddie would have been shocked that Axel Rose appeared as he detested him. |
emrabt 23.11.2019 22:03 |
Well one thing we do know, Paul Rodgers wasn't asked because he wasn't Freddies favorite singer yet. |
SweetCarolina 23.11.2019 22:35 |
What would be your fav setlist for that night with only Freddie songs |

A lot of people were there simply because they'd had a big hit in the previous year and were in vogue e.g. Seal, Zucchero, Annie Lennox. I agree it looked like a Brian May party at certain points. When he was jamming with Slash and Tomi Ionni, John, on the other side of the stage, looked like the new boy at school forced to eat his sandwiches in the corner on his own. Also, the bit where the guy from Extreme forced John to dance during Hammer to Fall was excruciating. |
Iron Butterfly 24.11.2019 03:08 |
With the exception of Spinal Tap, I like how it's a mix of rock and pop artists. |
cobohall 24.11.2019 11:01 |
I thought it was very generous of the "near legendary" Spinal Tap to cut their set by 35 songs, Cause "Freddie would have wanted it this way." |

@The Fairy King If you read plenty of books on Queen and Freddie it is well documented that Mercury stated if he ever met Axl Rose he would spit in his face and i remember Brian May telling that story too. You see when Axl was young stupid and ignorant he was also homophobic and Freddie was his main target to attack, but in later years after Fred died Axl changed his opinions around and declared Freddie was an amazing vocalist and musician. I think Brian had invited him over to the Freddie tribute concert to let him know there was no more hard feelings. |

Brian invites GNR to Freddie's do despite Freddie not liking them. Brian will not play Glastonbury due to badgers. Hmmm. |

Record companies were involved. QUEEN, Freddie were huge in popularity due to his death an the Bohemian Rhaspody single. Also the Aids was something that many artists wanted to help for increasing awareness. But the truth is that many artist were there due to record companies. |
Star* 25.11.2019 15:25 |
I think it was in very poor taste to invite Lisa Stansfield Paul Young and even Axl Rose and Metallica ! Freddie had no interest in that bunch of losers. |

Freddie admired Lisa, he had seen her in Broadway and in other occasions. Also she was invited at Queen party for Brit Awards in 1990, some other guests were George Micheal, Lisa Mineli, Rod Stewart, Paul Young. Metallica was a record company decision and G nR was friends of Brian and Roger, also Queen fans. The Tribute was beautiful goodbye and honored Freddie as artists and human. |

The concert was a bit strange. I remember really not liking it when it was on TV. I just wanted to see films of Freddie that night. I think we all kind of did actually. It could have been so much better. Montserrat actually should have been there, even if she wasn't going to sing. Maybe she couldn't make it of course. Looking back on it, Elton and Liza were the best choices. Extreme was a bit strange, and GnR were also a little bit of an eyebrow raiser. I don't think that Bob Geldof wrote that song with Freddie by the way. |

All four of the bands in the rock section were big fans of 70s Queen but it’s doubtful if Freddie would have been that interested . However he did go on record in that late 80s interview with Mike Read saying he liked Robert Plant and George Michael. There was Hollywood glamour and Broadway kitsch in the form of Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli respectively. Elton John was a personal friend. You can’t say anything negative about the industry status of Roger Daltrey and David Bowie. All in all a mixed bag but a lot had some value to add. I can only think of Zucchero, Lisa Stansfield and Seal as being totally pointless. |
matt z 07.12.2019 22:46 |
God.. Seal was terrible. The song was just so out of his range. ...and this was well before people were interested in changing arrangements and not just the key. Thanks for the reminder. I've still never seen the entire broadcast |
