Freddie later said he'd be doing it in a wheelchair. There's no reason to think he wouldn't still be touring. There might have been a movie, just would have been different. Oh, and all the things some grumpy fans insist "Freddie would never do!" he most likely would do. ;) |
Stick 17.10.2019 20:37 |
That would mean Freddie had never contracted Aids and that would have changed everything from that point on. Seeing as there are infinite variables involved in everything that might have happened differently it is useless to even guess. Everything would have been different and more so some 30 years after the fact. These kinds of questions just dont make sense to speculate upon because of that. Its even possible that because of that change in history Brian May would have been run over by a truck in 1990 see what I mean? |

So many things would have been different. I think yes Freddie would have performed at the 92 Olympics. The Barcelona things were already under way before Freddie’s diagnosis. I think Freddie would have done a cover album, and maybe no ‘The Miracle’ which Freddie seemed eager to do to “focus on business”... and whatever album they were to eventually do would have been so different. I wonder if Queen would have had a resurgence in the USA like Aerosmith did. Freddie was committed to Jim, but if Freddie never got AIDS, maybe they would have broken up and Freddie would have written a huge power ballad about it, or maybe songs about seeking somebody else, which was very traditional. Made In Heaven wouldn’t have existed at all. Nor A Winter’s Tale or Mother Love or You Don’t Fool Me. I’m sure Queen would have dabbled with that 90’s dance stuff, maybe more so on a Freddie solo album. I hope to God that Queen would never have done an “MTV Unplugged” album... once bands start doing that acoustic crap, they seem to be irrelevant soon after. |

Healthy Freddie is a different person than a person who is ill or about to get ill. I guess Jim Beach is representing Freddie estate based on what Freddie said to him when he was ill when his top priority at that time I presume would have been ensuring his loved ones are taken care of. All 4 of them in their prime together as decision makers is different from what we have now. I don't think Jim Beach was involved in any band decision making in their prime. I think it was just the 4 of them. Now, Jim Beach is representing only what ill Freddie told him. Based on what we have seen in the past when all 4 of them were there, they refused AOBTD to be used in a Rocky movie. So it is not difficult to assume the same, had all 4 continued to be part of Queen. As far as Freddie performing when he got older, I would like to think he would not have continued had John retired. As he clearly said all 4 contributed to the queen sound and not just 1 person. John was important to Queen sound as much as Brian and Roger. He may have gone on to do projects with Mike Moran, may have even done some theater if the right project came along, but definitely he would have been involved in music business in some way as he did not know anything else(his words). Probably why he said ' in a wheel chair'. In 1989 interview, he mentioned about needing to explore different modes instead of album, tour, album tour cycle. Who knows, may be they would have come up with a way to break the mold if Freddie felt not comfortable touring, may be not at that time, but at a later time. All 4 are intelligent people. As Mistercosmicc mentioned in another thread, may be doing just major cities instead of smaller cities. I agree with Mistercosmicc's comments regarding Queen doing 'MTV unplugged'. Would Queen still be touring? - would there have been more albums? May be once in 3-4 years. in between their solo projects. I am inclined to think they would have had reasonable success provided Freddie's voice held up. IMO, Brian's guitar work in the last albums were better than his work in the 80's as was John's bass work and Roger's songwriting skills also improved vastly. They would have definitely explored the new sounds in music. - would there still be Made In Heaven? May be their last album before they retired : ) (perhaps with different songs) - would there still be a Bohemian Rhapsody movie? No. - would Freddie and Montserrat Caballe performed together live at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics? Definitely. - would John still have retired? If they did an album every 3-4 years, I don't think so. May be from all the fighting, lol - would Queen have returned to America? (Possibly from the success of Wayne’s World?) Yes. new record label would have definitely pushed them to tour. - would Queen have broke up eventually? May be when they were all in their 60s. |

There would probably be the odd Queen tour. There would definitely have been a US tour after Wayne's World. I don't think Queen would ever have stopped but their work would be more sparse. The 1990s might have been fairly prolific. Instead of having Electric Fire, Happiness?, Another World and Back To The Light, we'd likely have had four more Queen albums. I know Back to the Light was begun while Freddie was alive but it was done in the knowledge they couldn't tour. Made In Heaven wouldn't have happened. There may not even have been Innuendo although there may have been. The movie? No. Probably not. Freddie said the idea was boring, but people change their mind. I doubt it would have happened though. Yes, Freddie and Montserrat were actually supposed to perform at that ceremony, but Freddie died. John would probably not have retired. Who knows though. They would have returned to America as I already said. Wayne's World was nothing to do with Freddie's death as far as I know, and it was coincidental that he died during production of the movie. I don't think they'd have split up. If you could imagine the present tour but with Freddie, I can imagine Freddie saying "we can't do all this touring and not give our fans an album" |

As long as he got his fix of adulation from the fans it would be business as usual. Be is solo or in the band. Factoring in (or more correctly 'out') the plans they made when he was alive that were effected by his health concerns a pretty clear picture emerges. They knew Queen was a golden goose that should be preserved. A business that should run it's course. Unfortunately I think with focus shifting to personal interests, the golden goose would lay too many golden turkey. Personally, I think if the band would've held it together in the 80s they would've been pretty fragmented by the 90s - output becoming less and less. However don't forget it was the late 80s that we started to get all the archival treats (Beeb, Rare Live, Magic Years) that basically ended once Freddie died. Maybe he would've had the sense to keep this going (sensing a buck no doubt and fine with looking back as he was happy to laugh at himself). Now in 2019 it's such a huge leap to picture where we'd be. I don't think they'd be as popular TBH. The cards have fallen well for them through adversity. Basically, the Everett - Wheeler model of quantum physics suggests, depending exactly where YOU are - the Queen you have could be very different to mine. |
dysan 18.10.2019 07:47 |
Further conjecture: Of course, the nostalgia cooked up in the late 80s (beginning somewhat with Freddie's The Great Pretender video) with the archival projects may have been born out of Freddie's health. But I guess projects like those would have a few years works - pointing to the band seeing post-The Magic Tour as a natural break to take stock. Well deserved of course. GH2 was also mooted in 1989 (I remember a competition in the FC to pick the track listing) so I guess that would be part of it too allowing them another career break. Instead they upped tools again for Innuendo and it became clear the clock was ticking. |

I have no idea. If Freddie was still with us, that would have been good e ough forme, although that might have meant I probably would not be a fan. I became a Freddie and Queen after Freddie passed. Maybe if they took a break like the Stones, Queen would have kept on making music and touring, and I would have became a fan that way. |
Theaterpup 18.10.2019 14:55 |
Yes I was referring to the Entertainment Tonight interview clip: As you get older, do you yourself find it more difficult to perform on stage? Freddie: I shall be doing it in a wheelchair, dear, don't you worry! link Worth pointing out, Paul Prenter did an interview in '84, saying he didn't think Mick Jagger would want to be touring at 60. I don't think it's a coincidence that Freddie echoed that same kind of sentiment at the time. But he became a lot more optimistic about the band a few years later, certainly after Live Aid. |

Gosh, please stop it. So it happens in showbiz that they keep changing their mind up all the time. Considering how unique Freddie was as a global superstar, I think it's fair to say no-one knew what really came next. And that's what never made him boring, not the hopeless reissues and interviews from 35 years ago. Sorry to be brutal, but this fucking dementia has to end! |

If Freddie was alive then there were no tribute show 1992, Paul Rodgers, Adam Lambert and Kerry Ellis.I don’t understand why Brian announcing regular concerts with Kerry Ellis he pronounces the phrase "let’s rock".It is unclear why he calls collabration with Ellis as "rock" it is "fuckin' pop" but not "rock". |

Well there is a certain guy around doing Queen covers with a ladyboy on vocals for years now telling everyone "Freddie would have loved it". Same thing |
dysan 20.10.2019 09:34 |
Further to my Everett - Wheeler model hypothesis, I think depending how far removed this reality is from the one where Freddie didn't get ill there would be some parallels - for example, the timeline of albums and tours would match. The final album and split by 1995, the big reunion in 2005 and another in 2012. |
