I'll allow stuff from their solo works too. In your opinion... which ones? Please. And thanks! |

'You take my breath away' is such a beautiful romantic song, wonderfully composed and sung by Freddie Mercury |

I sort of like ''39'. I know, it's because it's my favourite Queen song, but I find it beautiful and romantic in the sense that he sees his wife's eyes through his daughter... and then it stops being romantic and might become a little creepy... |

I'm going with Las Palabras Del Amor |
Jimmy Dean 02.04.2019 04:47 |
top 5 1. Las Parablas 2. Who Wants To Live Forever 3. One Year Of Love (the saxophone solo gives it a case for number 1... but lyric-wise falls behind WWTLF) 4. Save Me 5. Bijou honorable mention You're My Best Friend - melody is too poppy Teo Torriate - the chorus/choir kills the mood Love Of My Life - no longer in love You Take My Breath Away - infatuation vs. stalkish behavior! Nevermore - immediate reminder of Edgar Allen Poe I Was Born To Love You - basically one-sided + too upbeat |

Hi all, I'm overwhelmed at the quick response! Thank you! I'm gonna go have a listen to these, especially the ones I haven't actually heard before. I want to re-listen to everything I've listened to before (I think some of you know that I'm an "old fan" but only because I saw them in concert back in 1982, but I didn't follow them closely after that, much to my current sorrow, and because I was busy with RL and all, I only peripherally "heard" them...and noted Freddie's passing with sadness and some amount of resignation). So I'm re-acquainting myself with them now. I didn't actually like the movie, btw, but I understand the value-adding there... it not only brought me back, but it's brought a whole new generation (or few!) to the fold. That's a win-win IMO. Btw, amongst the tracks you all listed, YTMBA was always my favorite with StL a close second. But many of the others I had let fall by the wayside, so I'm going make a "mixed tape" of those ;) ;) The other reason I wanted to do this is because my mom -- yes, all of 80 years -- watched the movie with me. She had NO prior knowledge of Freddie or Queen. And now she wants to listen to the "slow songs" because she loves when he sings slow :) So I'm making her a mixed tape slightly different from mine. Oh, the other thing I wanted to mention while looking these over -- it struck me that no one listed LOML. Interesting! Is it because you all don't think it's a "romantic song" or is it not as popular/liked as the others in this group? Again, many thanks! If you think of more, let me know please? |
indy19 02.04.2019 05:02 |
Oh you JUST beat me by a few seconds and listed LOML! :)

Unless you JUST want to hear the romantic songs which in that case I'd recommend a Richard Clayderman Best Of. Is there a band that you do know ALL the albums of? What drew you to post on here? Genuine question. It's like me posting on a tank website because I visited a tank museum as a kid and occasionally see them on the news. |

Bijou is a sweet song too...like a jewel |
dysan 02.04.2019 06:58 |
Further - a 'mixtape' should really be stuff that means something to you. Especially for your mum! 'I love this song you put on for me!' 'Oh I don't know it - someone off a forum said it was romantic.' |

If we’re talking slow songs, I’m partial to anything with Freddie on piano. Besides YTMBA: My Melancholy Blues Jealousy Seaside Rendezvous In Only Seven Days There Must Be More to Life Than This (solo song, also version with MJ. Long history to this.) Your Mom might like the album Barcelona, which exists in the original and in an orchestrated version. Freddie’s voice is nice in Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow, but I don’t care for the song too much. Agree with Dysan though, there’s not a lot of albums to listen through. Freddie changed his vocal style a lot over the years. It’s good to hear things in historical order, or at least be aware of what era things come from. And then there’s the whole issue of live vs. studio. I like YTMBA from Earls Court, but many like Hyde Park better. |

Maybe a solution would be to buy Forever |

When my gal and I are feeling a bit romantic, we put on our Queen mix tape which includes: March of the Black Queen Son and Daughter Crash Dive On Mingo City We hit endless repeat until I'm happy and fall asleep. At that point she turns the cassette over and plays The Show Must Go On. We've never actually made it through MOTBQ, to be honest. Funny, how love is. |

Thanks all of you.... I'm taking a bit of time off -- drs order to minimize screentime, so I'll see you all later. I'll be listening to ALL of your recs though. Thanks SO VERY MUCH for indulging my little whim with such good grace. Yours, Indy xoxo PS. @Dysan -- you're a crotchety old thing aren't ya? I'm been laughing at your posts everywhere on this forum. I noticed you had NOTHING to contribute to my thread except to moan and bitch. Aren't there forum rules against trolling? IMO, I think you should take your own advice and post less and LISTEN MORE. And, yes, there IS a band of which I know pretty much EVERY SONG. It's a duo, really. Been a fan for ages of the Pet Shop Boys. Heard of 'em? ;) |
dysan 04.04.2019 07:03 |
My problem is I think I've listened to Queen too much! I suggested you buy Queen Forever, which is a one stop shop for almost everything suggested in this thread and a very helpful bit of advice if you can't be bothered to listen to the handful of albums you don't have. It's true, sometimes I can be crotchety and I'd hate for that to reflect in my postings. My questioning may have come across as aggressive and for that I apologise. The funnies are me, not bitching and moaning. I like to keep an air of humour in my posts, mixed with thoughtful musical archeology and knowledge when the thread requires - but when a thread comes in such as yours I like to understand the angle its creator was coming from. To me, this one didn't quite add up. Yes I know Pet Shop Boys. Never really liked them at the time, but have enjoyed listening to them recently. A guy who drove me to school some mornings used to play their tapes (along with some Queen ones) so they are forever locked into the same emotional and nostalgic place occupied by Queen (albeit on a few rungs down). I would add Nevermore to this thread, which to me is the most heartbreaking recording in the whole catalogue. Unfortunately it's segued to The Fairy Fellers Masterstroke on it's parent album but you can find a good stand alone version in the Fan Mix section. I'd avoid the BBC session version as it's a bit rougher and seems to lose the delicacy of the album cut. |

Dysan I had a heavy picture frame fall off the wall right onto my skull. It left a surface wound but I was gushing blood and whatnot and had to have a couple staples. They just came off today but I've been subjected to a lot of family legpulling (natural reaction I guess to relief that it wasn't much worse - I think I escaped with what seems a minor headwound) re nothing penetrating my thick skull - something you can tease me with as well.. I give you permission ;)
Yes I will buy QUeen Forever... thanks to you and everyone else for the suggestion. I'm back online now but have been warned to not be on too long.
Take care... and listen to some more PSB ;)

I sometimes wonder what Freddie may have thought of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. If he knew of them and heard them. I mean, he was all over the gay scene and dance clubs in the 80s, right...? |
dysan 08.04.2019 06:55 |
I think they would've met - especially as Neil Tennant was a pop journalist before PSB. I know NT was a big Bowie fan - so I guess a kid of the 70s would've had a few Queen LPs too. Hope your head heals up ok dude! Best wishes :) |
indy19 09.04.2019 02:18 |
Thanks dude xx Aside from the staples and the pain, the worst of it has been the thick-skull jokes I've been the butt of from family and friends lately... On the mend though... listening to all your suggestions, esp Queen Forever. |
