Hi, **Disclaimer: I am new to this board and this is my very firstest post, so I apologize in advance if I'm asking something that has already been answered elsewhere. Please don't eat me.** So, I started listening to Queen about six weeks ago. Purely by somewhat-creepy chance, I got up on the morning of November 24th (yes, I know) and sat on the couch to watch tv. I never do that because I always feel like I should be doing something more productive and I have a hard time choosing something to watch on demand. I pulled up Amazon Video and one of the suggestions was either a documentary about Queen or Freddie Mercury, I don't remember which. I should say that, up to that point in my life (I am 40), I believed that I actively disliked Queen. Bohemian Rhapsody? Barf City. But for whatever reason, I put the movie on. And then, yeah. I found out I kind of loved them. Maybe I fell in love. Who knows? Anyway, I've been obsessively watching everything I can find on them; documentaries, fake documentaries; weird made-for-tv movies; and listening to their music non-stop. I don't want to see Bohemian Rhapsody because I believe that, at this point in my infatuation, only the real thing will do. I've been focusing a lot on live shows where Freddie's voice is all squeaky and messed up because I find it weirdly adorable, but now I'm in the mood to hear some shows where he just kills it and I was hoping to get some suggestions on which shows fit the bill. Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise. Theresa :) |

Hi jakepuppy2 (Theresa) Welcome to this forum. A couple of years ago, someone on Queenzone posted a fairly long list of documentaries. I was grateful for the list. Here is the link to that page. I am not sure if anyone has made a list of live shows. One of my favorite concerts is: Queen: Rock Montreal. Freddie's voice is AMAZING. His rendition of "Somebody to Love" is my favorite. Also, Queen:Hungarian Rhapsody-Live at Budapest is another great show. link |

bucsateflon 06.01.2019 17:28 |
Oh my bad didn't know that was you again... with another account |
EMI2565 06.01.2019 17:40 |
NO, NOT ME - THIS IS MY ONLY ACCOUNT. I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH GARBAGE IS POSTED HERE AND SO CALLED INTELLIGENT POSTERS FALL FOR IT. |
jakepuppy2 06.01.2019 19:28 |
Wow. You guys are super-good at being nice. |
jakepuppy2 06.01.2019 20:22 |
I wonder what the god of your idolatry would think about you treating complete strangers like this in his honor. I don't think he would approve. Of course, I don't know him nearly as well as all of you. |

Here are a few: Live at the Rainbow '74 link (I WISH I could have been at this concert) Hammersmith Odeon '75 link Rock Montreal '81 link Live Aid '85 link Enjoy! :) |
jakepuppy2 06.01.2019 20:45 |
Thanks, spiraltastic. I've listened to bits and pieces of the ones you listed (except maybe Live Aid, although I'm not certain I've watched the entire set), but I'll definitely give them all a complete listen. It's fun to me because there are just SO MANY shows available. I feel like this is an activity I can do for the rest of my life. :P |

HOW CAN U FOCUS ON THE ONES WHERE FREDDIE IS SQUEAKY AND MESSED UP WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE LIVE SHOWS? YOU'D NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR TO FIND THEM AND MISS THE GOOD ONES. THINK PEOPLE FFS |

I am going to respond to you as though you are asking me an actual question and not just trying to be a dick. This is likely an error in judgement on my part, but I'm willing to play along because this is not life and death we're discussing here. I think all of the shows are "good ones." I'm not passing judgment on Fredide's voice in one show vs. another. I think it's kind of endearing and brave and sweet that he went out there night after night and tried every time no matter what. I had the thought recently of why he would try to sing certain things knowing that it probably wasn't going to happen and my opinion is that it's just how he was. He wasn't afraid to not be perfect. That speaks to me because I am *not* that way, but I think it would be a nice way to be. I'd like to try to implement in my life an attitude of being willing to be vulnerable and try things at 100%, regardless of the outcome. So maybe that's why the shows where his voice breaks or cracks or vanishes speak to me. It's really my business, but there you go. I'm not sure how I came to be aware that some shows sound different than others. I imagine it was from a search about Freddie's voice in general. There is a nice (in my opinion) post on Reddit - link - about this exact subject, so I am guessing that's where I got the information regarding which shows had those attributes. |
jakepuppy2 06.01.2019 21:18 |
I am happy to continue my own research. I just thought it might be interesting to get other people's opinions on what their favorite shows might be. I'm not sure how this immediately went off the rails. |

I'M NOT TRYING TO BE A DICK, YOU JUST COME ACROSS AS TOO SWEET TO BE WHOLESOME, INNOCENTLY ASKING FOR DIRECTION ON THINGS YOU SEEM TO ALREADY KNOW ABOUT. TO ME YOU'RE TRYING TO MAKE A FOOL OF PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKING YOU ON AS BEING GENUINE. IN OTHER WORDS, ANOTHER QZ TROLL, OR MAYBE JUST ANOTHER ACCOUNT OF A REGULAR TROLL. FOR SOMEONE WHO'S ONLY BEEN A FAN FOR 6 WEEKS, YOU SEEM VERY HAZY ON WHERE YOU LEARNED STUFF. IT'S NOT THAT LONG AGO YOU STARTING LISTENING APPARENTLY SO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECALL HOW YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW. YOU'RE NOT FOOLING ME. |
Cruella de Vil 06.01.2019 23:08 |
There are many unwarranted presumptions about personal authenticity here. Let’s give this person a break. Me, I would go beyond some of the official releases. Tokyo May 1 1975, Boston 76, Houston 77 Hammy Xmas ‘79 are all great as they show the band as a unit in top form and are very good quality as bootlegs. I would also recommend having a listen to the band’s support shows for Mott the Hoople as you can hear the hunger and determination to impress in their performances. Enjoy the journey and ignore the bullshit. Cheers! |

* LOVES FREDDIE'S SQUEAKY MESSED UP VOICE * DOESN'T REMEMBER WHERE THEY FOUND OUT WHERE TO LOOK FOR SHOWS WHERE HIS VOICE IS MESSED UP * HAS ONLY BEEN LISTENING FOR 6 WEEKS * HAS LEARNED (AND FORGOTTEN) SO MUCH IN 6 WEEKS DOES IT ADD UP = DOES IT SEEM GENUINE = ERM NO. WAKE UP |
jakepuppy2 07.01.2019 00:47 |
Thanks, Ms. de Vil. I will definitely look up those shows. I think the sheer quantity of bootlegs available is kind of phenomenal. It's like I just found the world's biggest treasure chest and, since it *is* so big, learning what other people who are way more knowledgeable than I would be a good place to start. Like, I would never have thought to look for shows where they opened for Mott. So, thank you. :) For the life of me, I cannot imagine what alternative, evil purpose I could have in asking what I think is a pretty simple and basic question, but not everything in this world is for me know. And, for the record, I *do* love the squeaky, breaking voice, and I don't give a crap if no one else on earth does. Good. More for me. |

I'd like to try to implement in my life an attitude of being willing to be vulnerable and try things at 100%, regardless of the outcome." I'm intrigued by your reasoning here. Everyone who knew Freddie who has spoken of him I've ever heard would call him a total perfectionist. He liked things to be perfect and liked to be in control. I mean, live you can't be of course, but creatively, as far as I have read... I understand what you're saying, and sure Freddie would try anything outlandish in the studio and on stage, but as I see it that was the way he strove for perfection - to go at every thing he did. Sure, he wasn't safe, but I think he was a perfectionist. I can't personally feel this relates much to his Iive vocals or any times they weren't the best. When Freddie doesn't hit notes I don't think his reasoning was as yours. He wants to hit every note. He doesn't not care if he doesn't. But tours can be tough especially when your voice is competing with a wall of sound rock band. And when he specifically sings down, he's not thinking "Oh no, I can't do that note tonight" - he's doing it to protect his voice for a whole tour, not because he couldn't sing how he recorded it, but because if he did that every night he wouldn't get through a whole tour, so he chooses to sing it a different way live in every show. |
bucsateflon 07.01.2019 20:13 |
Its called LIVE ROCK AND ROLL . hitting notes is NOT a must... |
jakepuppy2 11.01.2019 04:14 |
@spiraltastic: Doesn't everyone aim for perfection? :). I imagine he did want to hit every note. I certainly would. I was thinking about the times when he *did* try to hit whatever note and things went awry. I do believe, based on my experience as a person with a voice like everyone else on earth, that there were times when he may have been thinking just what you said - ain't no way that's happening tonight - but he did it anyway. I think there were a few (maybe more than a few, ahem) occasions specifically during the Tokorozawa show on 11/3/82 where he had to have known at lest that the odds were not in his favor for singing certain things, but he sang 'em anyway, warts and all. And I thought it was f*cking fantastic. I would love to know why he made that decision, because I think it says something about him (something good - do not release the hounds), though I honestly don't know what. Or maybe it was just the last show and he didn't give a f*ck, though we've already established that he was a perfectionist, so maybe that's not the reason. I guess I'll ponder on it for awhile, cause I think it's important to me personally in some way. I appreciate your thoughts and insights on the matter. :) You guys have straight worn me out in like three days. Theresa |
