What is the preferred file format/container for uploading videos?
For short clips I have been using mpeg and for longer docs etc I have sometimes used mkv, vob(dvd) and mpg.
Not uploaded any HD yet, but I assume mkv?

I fell in love with mkv years ago. I didn't put a DVD into my DVD player for so long that I don't even know if it still works. But of course we'll be grateful for ANY upgrades, independent from the container :-)
Yes, I prefer mkv too, it's quite versatile. I noticed quite a few that I downloaded date in the dvd vob format which I found a bit odd but maybe they've been up there a while. I'll stick to mkv where possib
MKV and AVI are containers, not formats. MKV is the most versatile, as said above.
Regarding formats, best practice would be to use the original in which you've got the file, if possible.
For new video encodings/remasters, please do not use MPEG-1/old MPEG-2 codecs as they are obsolete and marred with compression artifacts (blocking). H.264/MPEG-4 is a good option, I guess.
For new audio encodings/remasters, any lossless format.
I'm curious how can someone fulfill the relatively complex task of producing a decent "encoding/remaster", as you say, as long as he is unable to decide on trivial matters, like the output format.
I prefer ProRes 422, does it count?

You know, the thread's called "Preferred file format for uploads?". This is no rule. This is a question, which serves as a help for newbies or people new to this scene.
Dudes that have been wandering here for years already realized what kind of containers and codecs are used, which they prefer and which they use, etc. etc.
If you want to use .3gp for a new remaster, nobody's gonna kill you nor ban you. It will look quite shitty and the thread will be irrelevant, but that's it.
