They're currently on 1986 and that means we'll soon be coming up to the clip of the AKOM video in the top 10 which prompted me to turn to my dad and ask if it was the same band I enjoyed so much. He said it was and we popped into town that Saturday to get the single. Happy facking days. |

I think it was maybe the AKOM video that got me into Queen, I saw it on TV then saved all my money to buy whichever Queen album was in the charts at the time which happened to be Live Magic and loved it so much I had to hear the 'proper' (studio) versions of all those songs and that is where it began. I was 10. |
dysan 24.08.2018 15:18 |
Lovely. Similar time line for me except I'd had my dad's GH1 LP and had been aware of Radio Ga Ga. I'd got the debut copied for me at some point but my first actual album was also Live Magic. I was 10. |

Unfortunately the late Mike Smith was one of the TOTP presenters when the AKOM video was first featured on March 27th. No episodes featuring him are allowed to be re-broadcast as he didn't sign a licence extension agreement. The second showing with different presenters on April will be re-broadcast though. |

Yeah. I was referring to the brief clip I guess the following week. If I'd actually seen that at the time my brain might have short circuited. Although also, I might be getting muddled up with my 30 year old memory. I remember the POTU video got an airing one week (that I bloody missed) and my pal at school loved it. He was going on about this song (which I hadn't heard at that point) and would go around the playground shouting 'come on come on!! bring on the girls!' at girls. Good days man. |
Holly2003 31.08.2018 20:33 |
Mike Smith was a fairly innocuous presence as a tv presenter. A bit bland but vaguely likeable. His big failure was that he had the chance to assassinate Noel Edmonds but failed to do so. But at least he didn't put on a ridiculous mid-Atlantic accent as did many English DJs did back then. |

I remember I Want It All fondly. I was 13 and it was the first time I anticipated new Queen material. Since A Kind of Magic I had accumulated and digested and loved all the previous works (thanks to the AKOM video which I saw on TOTP when I was 10) so something new was about to happen and it was exciting. The Miracle was the first album I bought on release day with the dinner money I saved all week (I ate biscuits I took from home for lunch). That is why I love the album and will fight anyone who doesn't (Even My Baby Does Me and Rain Must Fall) |
The Real Wizard 14.03.2020 22:51 |
It's a great album, with most of the classic Queen trademarks. I have no idea why some people prefer Hot Space to it - the writing and production are so much better. |
Penetration_Guru 15.03.2020 00:03 |
I'm not a fan of it for the same reasons - The writing - the first two tracks are, to me, filler. IWIA & WIAWI are good, TIM, Breakthru & Scandal are average pop tunes. MBDM - poor Cool Cat remake. RMF - just horrible. The production - or possibly more the arrangements. WIAWI has an overlong intro, and then having introduced the guitar, swamps it in dull keyboards from then on. TIM has far too much percussion. For context, while I'm a little older than mooghead, my experience of that period was similar, in that I got properly into Queen post-AKOM, and The Miracle was the first Queen album I bought on the day of release. |

Penetration_Guru wrote:For context, while I'm a little older than mooghead, my experience of that period was similar, in that I got properly into Queen post-AKOM, and The Miracle was the first Queen album I bought on the day of release.I'm speaking as a fan who had bought every and any recordings - even remotely Queen related. In 1992 - when it became clear there'd be no new recordings to collect, I sold the lot: Lurex 7" collabs with other artists like Howell, Hunter, Squier etc, rare demo 7" , rare Pic sleeves, pic vinyl, and even some ultra rare col vinyls. I kinda like the Miracle for the exact opposite reasons. i'd been a fan since '74. with each new release (after Jazz) I felt a little more jaded. I could see the rock edge being "filed down" and being replaced - not just with funk etc, but with pop and (worse) downright pap. "Hot Space" was anathema to me. Don't get me wrong, I love soul music. But HS sounded thin - like it had been recorded in a biscuit tin using Tandy 99p Mics. Other rock bands ventured out of their comfort zones - with much better results. AKOM was as bad - the production was worse still, but redeemed a little by one or two better tunes. The Miracle and Innuendo brought me back "home". It was nice that Freddie signed off with two LPs more akin to the traditional Queen sound. |

brENsKi wrote: The Miracle and Innuendo brought me back "home". It was nice that Freddie signed off with two LPs more akin to the traditional Queen sound. And there we have it (see what I did there?). They aren't Queen II or Sheer Heart Attack, but they are undoubtedly stronger than most of their 80s output. Once you take out the best half dozen songs (let's say Play The Game, Dragon Attack, It's A Hard Life, Hammer To Fall, Who Wants To Live Forever, and Princes Of The Universe), there isn't too much left. Die hard fans can defend the middle period all they want, but a hundred years from now when people are looking back at all the great bands, it will be their 1974-75 output that stands the test of time, along with some of the hits from after that. Queen became less consistent after News Of The World, which just happens to be when the money rolled in. They became less hungry and focused, and Mercury's interests shifted elsewhere. In one way or another it happens to pretty well every band. The fact that Queen produced a half dozen or so great albums is about the most any artist can hope to achieve. And even if everything after 1977 were to be ignored, it is still a great canon of work. |

Imagine playing The Miracle to someone who didn't like Queen to try and change their mind. It would be humiliating. Their worst album (and Freddie's only bad album, vocally) in my view, but I understand lots of people on here have an emotional attachment to it, which is fair enough. |

@Thrill Yeti - I thought Freddie's vocals were really good in 'The Miracle' album, specially the title song and Breakthru. I like some songs in the album,Scandal, Hang on in there, title song, Breakthru, Rain must fall (even if it is lifted off of candi stanton song), but definitely not as much as I like their 70's albums. @The Kurgan - Thanks for sharing the TOTP re-broadcast. made me feel quite nostalgic. |

Wow...I had the exact same hairstyle as the lady that announced Breakthrough...but I guess we all did! Funny thing from Rudi Dolezal...if there was one thing in all his videos he could do over, it would be to paint the inner sides of the bricks the same gray color as the front, because when the guys broke through the bricks out of the tunnel you could see the white edges of the styrofoam. I never even noticed it until he said that! |
ggo1 16.04.2020 19:28 |
The Miracle... hmm, at the time I thought it was fairly weak, but WIAWI seemed like a fantastic way to end a career, and i did think it was going to be the last ever Queen song. Im glad it wasnt though, Innuendo was a real return to form for me and TSMGO turned out to be an even more fitting finale. Also, looking back you can see how Miracle is a stepping stone to Innuendo. Anyhow, i like a lot of the songs on the Miracle but never loved the album as a whole. Dont think ive played it all the way though in years, which i still do with the 70s albums, I've just never liked the first two tracks and it's hard to love an album when it doesn't grab you from the start. I find it just as variable as the other 80s albums tbh, I know many people rate it higher than I do, but for me it's just trying too hard to make a US radio friendly sound, which again, is just my opinion. Thinking about it the only other track i actively dislike is My Baby Does Me, so 7/10 i like, pity the first 2 are in the 3. Some fabulous songs though, Breakthru is fun, though isn't it basically just n attempt to make Don't Stop Me Now part 2? (cat, pigeons) I'm still all in for the proposed box set if it happens. Also don't know why I dislike Party and Khashoggi so much, I usually love the heavier Queen sound. |

Look at all of those styrofoam particles being blown all over the place.... If only the middle aged Brian had any idea on how many poor innocent badgers and foxes suffocated on those styrofoam particles as well as it all going into the waterways...... Jeez, after watching breakthrough and to a lessor extent... ACDC Long way to the top if you.... 2020 I wonder if you could get away with filming on a moving object without Health and Safety having a word to say.... All of those regulation sign offs having stunt doubles or getting a heights certificate and learning how to use a fall arrest harness, having to wear high vis as the rail is classed as a work zone.... Just imagine if there was a slight bump in the tracks... The last sight of John Deacon losing his footing as he falls into Rogers drum kit and sweeping them both off the back... Or a cow or something getting on to the tracks and the train had to employ the emergency breaks.... Everyone being crushed against the front steel bars by Rogers drum kit, Brian dropping his red special over the side.... I think that would have to be the one thing that would have broken Brian.... Not John loosing his life as he goes over board, not Freddie as he does his push up thing on the side rails and gets a bit of vertigo and falls over BUT.... Brian dropping his beloved Red special and seeing it slip under the wheels of the carriage turning into kindling.... Luckily the band doesn't have the same vertigo issues I feel that I would had on that moving platform.... |

For me it's the return to the Queen sound, Miracle and Innuendo sound like a band that can be bothered: bothered with writing decent songs, playing well, working like a band again and actually taking the time to construct and arrange their songs with care and love. everything from (half of The Game - through to AKOM) was Queen doing everything that wasn't Queen: lazy song-writing, piss-poor production, paint-by-numbers song arrangements and a lack of love of their job. this is evidenced by Roger and John effectively becoming the "hit writers", Freddie and Brian taking a lesser role. Less Freddie piano, less vocal arrangements, less Red Special = less Queen sound. this period completely abandoned the very soul of Queen. there may be more pop hits, but more is definitely not better. if queen from 80-86 never existed (maybe compiling one LP from the best tracks) to bridge the 70s to the Miracle, the band would have a blemish-free catalog. FWIW - my 80-86 LP would be: One Vision Play The Game The Hero Dragon Attack It's A Hard Life Save Me Hammer To Fall Princes Of The Universe (and ...if they'd been finished) It's A Beautiful Day Let Me Live |
