What a shithead move by Queen Productions to allow pre sale of tickets for the fall. And then announce a couple months later saying Queen Extravaganza has a new lead singer. A lot of people on Twitter and Facebook are pissed about this. |
cmsdrums 25.02.2018 09:22 |
Don’t know if he’s left or been sacked, but if it were temporary or amicable then surely the press release would give Martel a nod somewhere? Selling tickets up front knowing that he was not going to be in the band is very deceitful - this other guy may be a phenomenal vocalist but he is not going to sound like Freddie in the way Martel does, and essentially that is what the audience are looking for in any Queen tribute act and why they’re buying tickets. The general public are not going to be fussed if the bassist captures John’s tone, or if Tyler Warren has Roger’s snare sound, but they want the singer to sound like Freddie without it being an impersonation, and that’s what they got with Martel. However Martel has apparently formed his own Queen tribute band to tour with and don’t know if he thought that would be ok whilst staying in the QE? To do that seems rather disrespectful to Queen, and the rest of the QE members. I’m hoping that whatever has happened doesn’t cause QPL to pull the performances Martel has recorded for the upcoming film. |

Lord know why they didn’t add something in the original release about the new singer to say that Marc’s schedule didn’t allow his to play with them this time. Still bang out of order to have sold tickets and held the news of his absence back until now. |
rockchic65 25.02.2018 12:51 |
They've put an announcement from Marc on Queenonline saying scheduling conflict. link Marc's put some announcement on his own website about a collaboration thing that came up that was too good to miss for Nov/Dec, don't know how long it's been there though. The dates don't cross with QEX but there's only a couple days between the two. link Maybe he only told them last minute? |

i had already got my tickets.before this was released...no a happy bunny. |
rockchic65 25.02.2018 19:46 |
No, you and lots of others. Don't know how long they've known for but it's really not good. Technically they advertised QEX and people just assumed it would be Marc but enough people were questioning it on QEX and Marc's own f/book page and no one was answering. Don't know how the ticket thing works but it would be good PR if they took the hit and offered refunds to anyone not still wanting to go. |

It's not like he has a professional obligation to stay on the same gig for the rest of his life. Who knows what the timeline was, and who chose to say what publicly and when. The film will probably go on as planned. It is extremely unlikely that anyone outside of Hollywood has veto power over whose voice can be heard in a film if the tracks have been cut and paperwork has been signed. Judging by how smart Martel was with the wording of his press release, it sounds like he's got himself covered. |

Yes did the same thing in 1980 when Jon Anderson wasn't in the band. The Drama album was out, but the less people who knew, the better. They knew less people would come if they knew the Buggles guy was singing. Business is business. |
john bodega 02.03.2018 10:16 |
I can remember when they had 4 singers, it was always an instant mood-killer to go from 'the guy that can sing Queen' to 'one of those other space-fillers'. Can't imagine how shitted off I'd be if I paid money thinking I'd be seeing this guy, and getting someone else - could be a complete crapshoot! |
rockchic65 02.03.2018 19:16 |
Wouldn't be so bad but I've checked him out on YouTube and it's not looking good. Just glad I didn't have tickets, I would not be happy. |
inu-liger 04.03.2018 04:46 |
Was it ever really confirmed that Marc recorded vocals for the film, or is that just speculation? |
rockchic65 04.03.2018 07:24 |
He had some posts on his facebook page saying "cutting vocals in my studio for film producer overseas and this was on his website link. He was also tweeting pics of himself outside the Abbey Rd studios, around the time they were filming the movie, so the timeline seems to fit. Plus this on Music City Management website, Nashville - MARC MARTEL RECORDS VOCALS AT ABBEY ROADS STUDIOS IN LONDON! Marc Martel spent the week recording vocals for an upcoming project he is part of at Abbey Roads Studios in London! Think the rest of it came from some die hard fan he has who spouts all sorts of theories as if they are actual facts, especially on Marc's YouTube vids. He claimed Marc did all the vocals for the movie because the sound mix for the original stuff wasn't good enough and Rami can't sing, or at least like Freddie. Don't get the sound mix bit, there's plenty of live stuff of the band been released, why would it be good enough for that but not the movie? |
john bodega 04.03.2018 07:32 |
Sure sounded like Martel doing the singing for that Live Aid bit |
cmsdrums 05.03.2018 19:20 |
On the leaked film footage of them reproducing Live Aid it absolutely sounded like Marc. I’m still intrigued as to who is playing the music behind him because they don’t have multi tracks for Live Aid and it’s not the original audio being used, most likely in this instance because the sound quality won’t be good enough to be used in film setting. |

I feel like such an uninformed moron :( I am sitting here at Harrah's in AC, NJ and I was shocked to come in and NOT see Marc Martel. I bought my tickets long in advance, and drove 4 hours from DC to get here. I spent good money on the room we rented. the meals, etc. I also bought a shirt.and the meet & greet passes... because I thought I would get to meet Marc? I am so upset, feel sad, angry, stupid, and lots of mixed emotions. If I knew, I would not have come... :( !!! Grrrrrr |

@howarddavidp I just drove three hours to get there myself showed up to the concert the music started to play I have been waiting months for this queen was the first CD that I ever owned my wife knew how much this meant to me. And then some guy in a leather jacket comes out on stage and start singing and sounds nothing like Freddy or Marc The guitar player was amazing is the only thing I can say positive about this I felt like I had been duped, lied to and taken advantage of. I left after the first song and went to the bathroom with tears streaming down my face and then I left the venue. Something I have always wanted all my life, I was not old enough to see queen live this was as close as I would ever come and it was one of the biggest disappointments of my life. I felt really bad for the people on stage they are trying hard but it’s people going through the motions, the original members of queen should be embarrassed by this but the almighty dollar prevails. I have so many emotions right now I don’t know how to feel |

Jwcom, So much drama.. and you can't spell Freddie's name correctly...Whose fan are you? Marc's been touring with his own Queen tribute band for over a year now. There is also another brilliant Freddie sound alike, Gary Mullen, if you want a more energetic show, he tours as well. |
john bodega 06.10.2018 07:46 |
I really think they're a victim of their own good fortune in this exercise - they couldn't have asked for someone more right for the original job than Martel. Ultimately the concept of Queen tributes has never been more ass-backwards. Martel almost gets shat on for being too much like Freddie (as if it's a bad thing??), and now Extravaganza has someone who couldn't be further from the Queen sound and he's also getting shat on, haha. You can't win! It's a tough racket, I'm almost at peace with not doing the Brian thing anymore myself. |
Dr Magus 06.10.2018 08:58 |
Maybe Bri was worried that QE was going to overtake Q+AL as the number one tribute band. |
AngelR 06.10.2018 10:30 |
As far as I remember, it was Roger's retirement project. So QuEx was supposed to overtake Queen. The original plan was to form several QuEx bands! Brian and Roger had no idea if they would tour as Queen + AL in 2011 when QuEx was formed. |

Went to see Queen Extravagnaza last night not knowing that Marc Martel had been switched for Alirio Netto. Wowza, he absolutely ruined the gig for me and quite a few people left at half time too. Netto doesn't sing nor act like Freddie in any way. His voice just doesn't suit the band. Waited a full year for this gig and can honestly say I was absolutely gutted. Rest of the band were fantastic but the singer ruined it for me. |

It's a tough racket, I'm almost at peace with not doing the Brian thing anymore myself.Just curious, Marc in 2017 decided to start his own Queen tribute band and then went ahead and booked shows in various places. I realize he couldn't be expected to not work and just stay home waiting for the next QEX gig but isn't it kind of biting the hand that feeds you to start a project in direct competition with the one you've been hired for, especially when he started doing official Queen covers on an album/EP? He was in his own christian rock band originally, maybe they expected him to do that or solo things in between QEX tours, just thinking aloud here. In fact between 2012 and 2017 I'm not sure what he did between tours but he didn't start the tribute band until then and that's the first time he ended up no longer touring with QEX. Also having got shows booked isn't it entirely possible Roger had no choice but to get someone else when Marc wasn't actually free to tour when they needed him. We only know what they've officially put out there but it does make me think. |

Maybe he just wanted to do things his way, with more control over his artistic direction. It could be that simple. Being a little more clinical could it have been a financial decision. Fronting his own show might put more money in his account, providing he sells tickets. I've never been a big fan of the Extravaganza, with Marc fronting it. There are many tribute bands who do the whole look but fall short with the vocals, and sometimes the guitar sound. A very small handful pull it off really well. With Marc the vocals were as good as anyone could be, but the show lacked so much of made a Queen show memorable, even down to Mr Martel's lack of natural showmanship. I just think if your going to do a tribute with a voice like Marc Martel's in the band the band and production needs all the bells and whistles. I think that the amount of people complaining about the current tour is a reflection of the band just being a band with a singer, who really could be anyone. |
MisterCosmicc 06.11.2018 21:48 |
Why even have the Queen Extravaganza when Queen tour? And why do they need a few backing vocalists? Did Queen have people on stage doing backing vocals when Freddie was alive? |
Vocal harmony 07.11.2018 12:30 |
They were formed by Roger Taylor. At the time Queen had no plans to tour again. The original idea, I believe was to have a band which could produce the recorded work live, hence originally they had two guitarists and the extra backing vocalists. I'm not a fan, but they have toured successfully, nth rough the years, and present a different experience to seeing Queen/Queen+ live. |

Remains to be seen if it balances out enough to make it still viable. |
