Brian May and John Deacon.
Live on stage, apart from the very occasional jam such as Magic and when Brian plays piano, these two could never be any further apart on stage, but in studio... Some of the songs recorded in studio sound like John and Brian are having a very intimate jam together. You could almost visualize them as a couple of mates sitting on the couch in the lounge and having a beer whilst playing around on the bass and guitar. There are many moments whether it may be Brian on guitar, vocal or piano and John on bass creating some beautiful pieces of music together, some delicate such as the piano and bass on Teo Torriatte or bass and guitar on Sail Away Sweet Sister. There are also a select few that also have John on the six strings such as the little Spanish part on Who Needs You. ..
SO... What is your favorite Mr Deaky and Dr May combo?
Hi there, for me it's The Night Comes Down and as mentioned, Sail Away Sweet Sister and Teo Toriatte. It is often in the slower, quieter numbers that John's melodic sense is given free reign. Live I would say White Queen, Son and Daughter (the reprise), Father to Son, and I really like the unison lines in Sweet Lady, and Brighton Rock, where Brian goes up and John goes down. Simple, but really naff.
I always thought that BM and JD worked really well together. Instrumentation wise at it's core Queen were a three piece, most of the time, with the addition of Freddie's piano some of the time. Of course this changed into the 80's
Like any good Guitar, Bass and Drums lineup each member had to play well together. Liar and Keep Yourself Alive and the three piece instrumental parts of Brighton Rock after the vocal sections during 78 and 79 are great live examples .
