Is there any way to get the film clips in better quality than they're in on the Greatest Video Hits DVDs? The quality on some of those is exceptionally poor, but there doesn't seem to be much alternative. Of course HD is a big ask. At very least, the uncropped versions of the 4:3 videos should be available, right? |
winterspelt 09.10.2014 20:03 |
The only way to get them in a higher resolution is to rip your own DVD's and upscale them, but Im sure you dont want to do it! It seems that many bands are not interested in getting their videos in HD (or, in the case of GH 3, DVD). I cant blame them, bluray discs have been accessible to most people just recently, but the lack of catalog (compared to DVD) and the fact that 4K tv's are a lot cheaper, and an upcoming new 4k format may be released in the near future, may be the cause for the delay. |
tomchristie22 09.10.2014 20:49 |
Ah well. I can't complain that they're focusing on live releases and not this - their music videos were never anything at all special. |
Doga 09.10.2014 22:02 |
And besides, i bet most of Queen clips were filmed in tape, Fat Bottomed Girls and Another One Bites the Dust looks horrible, for example. Barcelona was filmed, and the HD version of the clip is in Queen youtube channel. Probably Made in Heaven (1985) was filmed aswell. I'd like to know if A Kind of Magic and Princes were filmed or videotaped, knowing Mulcahy is a film director. |
Bad Seed 10.10.2014 01:57 |
Everything from Works, Magic, Miracle & Innuendo was filmed |
Nitroboy 10.10.2014 02:32 |
Some of the early/mid stuff was also filmed, like "Save Me" for instance. Not all of The Works stuff was shot on film, "Hammer To Fall" was for sure, but "I Want To Break Free" was shot on tape if I remember correctly. Not sure about "It's A Hard Life" |
Bad Seed 10.10.2014 02:46 |
Break Free & Hard Life both film |
tomchristie22 10.10.2014 03:04 |
Don't Stop Me Now definitely is. It's really hard to tell if Break Free is just based on the YouTube video, which seems to have really choppy playback (unless my PC is failing). |
GinjaNinja 10.10.2014 07:22 |
The following were shot on film: We Are The Champions, Bicycle Race (only the shots of the girls cycling), Don't Stop Me Now, Another One Bites The Dust, Save Me, Body Language (I think), Radio Ga Ga (but not the hover vehicle bits), It's A Hard Life, I Want To Break Free, Hammer To Fall, One Vision, A Kind Of Magic, Friends Will Be Friends, Who Wants To Live Forever, Princes Of The Universe, The Miracle, I Want It All, The Invisible Man, Breakthru, Scandal, Innuendo (mostly), I'm Going Slightly Mad, Headlong, These Are The Days Of Our Lives, No-One But You. They may not still retain the original film rushes for some of them, so are stuck with bad videotape transfers. They should be available for the David Mallet and DoRo ones though. Even ones from videotape will benefit from the higher bit-rate of Blu-Ray (just look at Somebody To Love on the Days Of Our Lives documentary). |
tomchristie22 10.10.2014 07:35 |
It seems likely that they don't have all the original prints anymore - you'd think they wouldn't present Another One Bites the Dust in such terrible quality unless it was absolutely all they had, for example. Still, chopping the 4:3 clips down into widescreen amplified the quality problems that were already there in many cases... Such a misguided decision. I'm so glad they're keeping the more recent SD concert releases intact in their aspect ratios. Radio Ga Ga is probably my favourite Queen video clip. It's so stupid and so fun. |
brians wig 10.10.2014 07:48 |
Give them time. The upscaled Rainbow to a SD BD was a test to see how well it would do. I suspect that the long rumoured BD of the promo vids will soon be back on the cards now they can produce a great SD upscale of their video sourced promos. |
tomchristie22 10.10.2014 08:13 |
How was the Rainbow upscale, by the way? I skimped out on the SD Blu Ray, figuring it couldn't be that much better than DVD. |
Barry Durex 10.10.2014 08:24 |
^ I can only say the SD blu-ray looks way better than I expected. I can't compare it to the DVD, but I would be most surprised if there is no noticeable difference. Surely somebody who has both copies can verify please? |
rhapsody8 10.10.2014 10:38 |
Around the date of release Days Of Our Lives documentary, Rhys Thomas said that he would like to see all promo vids on bluray in someday. He was the producer of Video Hits DVDs if I remember correctly. So, maybe someday we will have the Queen Greatest Video Hits Bluray. |
winterspelt 10.10.2014 11:33 |
I have lots of nice memories around the Queen videos that I would love to see them in HD too. It doesnt matter if the quality is not the best. |
Oscar J 10.10.2014 11:57 |
What's the point of HD resolution if the quality sucks? |
Chief Mouse 10.10.2014 12:18 |

Self Made Man 10.10.2014 12:52 |
I'm waiting for this since the day Rhys said original hd rushes exists. |
Jake12 10.10.2014 16:33 |
Hate to say this but the UK iTunes Store has some Queen videos quality is meh! |
Jake12 10.10.2014 16:34 |
One vision looks great! |

Ale Solan 10.10.2014 17:05 |
The answer to this question is VERY simple, if it's not released by Queen, there's no HD versions of the versions you already know. |
tomchristie22 10.10.2014 19:31 |
Ale Solan wrote: The answer to this question is VERY simple, if it's not released by Queen, there's no HD versions of the versions you already know.Makes sense. Have the uncropped videos of Bohemian Rhapsody etc. been released in any form that's still accessible? I assume it would've been prior to GVH if so |
Ale Solan 10.10.2014 22:39 |
You should get this one http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=328672 |
tomchristie22 10.10.2014 23:24 |
Ah, thank you! |
matt z 11.10.2014 01:03 |
Bitching again, but ... It's a damn shame INNUENDO wasn't revisited as a SINGLE CD and a CD+ DVD including promo stuff. If there ever was an album deserving of it (for catalogue reasons: last album completed in Freddie's lifetime PLUS "videos omitted on every subsequent GVH release) It should have been THE ONE to get under the new contract. Oh well. |
tomchristie22 11.10.2014 02:05 |
Do we know why they excluded the Innuendo videos from GVH2? I always figured they must have thought it too morbid. |
Mkls 11.10.2014 03:16 |
TIME is also in HD, a lot better transfer on the recent Dave Clark bluray than DoRo/QPL version |

Chief Mouse 11.10.2014 03:35 |
^ Nice! Do they show the full video or only snippets (most likely)? If so, how long? |
Doga 11.10.2014 03:36 |
Is always a pleasure eating my words. What a great surprise discover Queen cared enough to film their videos. Definitely a Bluray with Queen videos in HD plus the Mr. Bad Guy ones will be a great product. |
Mkls 11.10.2014 04:15 |
snippets only :( even on the extra bonus bluray disc the video is not in full form. though the FM/David Clark interview section is about 20 mins there ! |
Nitroboy 11.10.2014 06:39 |
Jake12 -> Those iTunes videos are terrible quality, they're too compressed. P-Tr -> Those screenshots look nice, except... They're interlaced! yuck :P |

tomchristie22 wrote: At very least, the uncropped versions of the 4:3 videos should be available, right? The laserdisc versions of Greatest Hits I,II & III look better than the DVD releases. They are mostly 4:3 full screen (a few are 4:3 letterboxed) link |

P-Tr extinction event, any chance you could mux out those snippets (without encoding if you know how to do that) and send me through PM? Would be much appreciated. Thanks. |
Oscar J 11.10.2014 11:00 |
How do you just deinterlace a video like that? My Rainbow DVD is interlaced and it's slightly annoying. |
winterspelt 11.10.2014 12:20 |
Wow, nice work...! |
Nitroboy 11.10.2014 12:37 |
Oscar J wrote: How do you just deinterlace a video like that? My Rainbow DVD is interlaced and it's slightly annoying. Most video playing software have the option to do so. As for media players, I don't know, when I watched the DVD it wasn't interlaced. |

Found it, cheers! |
RafaelS 12.10.2014 10:12 |
For me it's a total mystery why there's no officiale Innuendo box set that hasn't been released yet. With so much unseen stuff we deserve to have something released related to Innuendo. |
Jake12 09.11.2014 21:42 |
Maybe this is the beginning! link |
