It took me a long time to finally watch it! But since it's my least favourite album I never cared much. Well, what can I say. My first thought was "what a crap!" but as I was watching I tried to keep in mind that it is a "comic book style" movie, just like the original Batman series was (please correct me if I'm wrong). It's aesthecally beautiful and the special effects look lame now but I guess they must have been impressing 34 years ago. And it was nice to listen to the songs in context, of course. |

I saw it when it first came out in the theater and "yes" the special effects were cool at the time. This was a period when I was 15 and still on a Star Wars high. These day's I'll watch it around Christmas. As corny as it is now it still brings me back to my teen years. |

Whenever I watch that movie now, I cant help but wonder how the guy from the BBC kids show Blue Peter (Peter Duncan) got a cameo in it. Then I also remember it had Princess Aura in it....... And as of 2012, she still looks good.... http://i590.photobucket.com/albums/ss343/mr_mercury/ORNELLA-MUTINowAndThen_zpsae370c0e.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo ORNELLA-MUTINowAndThen_zpsae370c0e.jpg"/> And it is corny, but it was also good fun :) |

Don't be harsh, it's a remake of a remake of a 1930's action comic. But I admit I like more the erotic version |
thomasquinn 32989 04.05.2014 09:08 |
It's not just a remake of, it's a tribute to the pulp style film serials of the interbellum period (roughly, the 1920s and 1930s). When you've seen some of those (try looking some up on link, I think you'll appreciate Flash Gordon (1980) more, or at least differently. |
Marknow 04.05.2014 09:24 |
For what it was I think it was a great movie, the soundtrack was as brilliant as it was diverse. Interesting to see that Max Von Sydow aka Ming has got a part in the new Star Wars film. As for Aura, she was and still is one tidy piece! That accent = sexual chocolate. |

I really enjoyed it at the time. Saw it again two or three years ago and still enjoyed it, although with the passage of time I think you see things differently. As Thomasquinn has pointed out it is a tribute to a by gone age. The one thing that has always stuck with me is the ending, brilliantly setup for a sequel which never happened! |

Idea for a 'double feature' movie night or whatever......watch Flash Gordon and then Ted......... seriously I just about died laughing at the parts in Ted with Sam Jones......:D |

Flash Gordon is to pulp comic pastiches what Body Language is to Queen's Greatest Hits. Take the blinkers off. Its awful. |

Plenty of skin in most of her films. A few actual GOOD characterisation films as well as exploitative stuff. Btw. I'm pretty sure she had married a plastic surgeon years ago. ADDENDUM: Were you creeped out like I was (when I first saw the film) bythe Greek semi homo looking hawk men? Those guys (and bad television transfers) put me off the movie for a long time. There are times when I enjoy the soundtrack more than the film.... and vice versa. The soundtrack is really incredible. Dark, atmospheric, inspirational and also very ominous (arboria comes to mind) I could only imagine HOW COOL it must have been to drop the needle on that soundtrack as a kid growing up in the era |
Wiley 05.05.2014 09:04 |
I used the 2011 release of the soundtrack as an excuse to finally get into it. I may have listened to it not more than a couple of times in its entirity over the previous 20 years, never paying much attention to it. I got the 2011 release, coincidentally, around the time the movie "Ted" came out so it all tied in together nicely. I really liked it. It is indeed atmospheric and dark at times. There are a couple of cool themes in there and I like how they get revisited in other tracks, specially in the reprise. The "Death to Ming!" part now cracks me up because of the movie :). |

Homo wing men plus the football match makes for a really good bath house scene (they did not show it in the movie, but the are rumours of outtakes with Freddie in it, can't see much of his face though). Soundtrack has a vibe that would fit a lot better in Star Wars Episode V. |

*goodco* wrote: A timely pop up on my fbook page two days ago.... linkTheres some interesting info in that article......like Kurt Russell was the first choice for the lead, and Schwarzenagger was turned down for the role..... And Pink Floyd was the first choice to do the soundtrack??? Whoa......ok, I just can NOT imagine them doing that.....Queen was a natural choice to do the soundtrack to a movie like Flash Gordon....(ie campy, over-the-top)..... |
*goodco* 07.05.2014 22:22 |
Surprised there's no mention of Gary Numan being pegged for the proposed sequel's soundtrack. It is fun to imagine what Floyd might have done with this. Or what the soundtrack, minus dialogue, would be like (why haven't they offered this?) For all the bad, and the camp, Max Von Sydow as Ming was terrific.....eons above the rest. |
Holly2003 08.05.2014 03:12 |
Yeah but according to the article it wasn't supposed to be campy and over-the-top. In retrospect, it's hard to see how it could have been otherwise. It reminds me a bit of Barbarella.
Hard to understand why so many Queen fans don't rate it. It has some great moments and is at least as enjoyable as the music Queen did for Highlander.

Best thing about Flash Gordon is the Movie Ted (Sam Jones "Lets do some shots!") |
