Was thinking about some of the albums that are considered a band's "definitive" "classic" or "signature" work, and from a personal view how I prefer another album from their catalogue. For me, there's some major artists in the list.
So here's some examples of what I mean:
ARTIST SIGNATURE LP MY PERSONAL FAVE
Led Zep IV In through the Out Door
Pink Floyd DSOTM Wish you Were Here
Queen ANATO II
Bowie Rise & Fall of Ziggy.... Hunky Dory
Sabbs Paranoid Heaven & Hell
Purple Machine Head In Rock
Leppard Hysteria On Thru The Night
ELO Out of the Blue A New World Record
Beatles Sgt Pepper's Lonely... Abbey Road
Van Halen 1984 5150
Thin Lizzy Jailbreak Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)
anyone else have similar feelings - as to preferring any band's non "signature" album?
As much as I love Zep, Floyd, Bowie and the Beatles (and have a mild liking for Sabbath and ELO) there's not a single album that any of them have released that I can say I like all the way through. Sorry, I know that gives the topic absolutely no input whatsoever lol - but I never even noticed it until I looked at your list.
ah yes, but the topic is about ANY bands' signature albums and your preference. those above were just a few that i personally like and relate to
this could be for ANY of your own music collection - where YOUR taste differs from the established so-called definitive album of that band
lol, I know - all I'm saying is that I didn't realise that about myself until I read YOUR list ;)
For all the varied music I have in my collection, or have downloaded, there's not a single artist that I would say had a standout album apart from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", Fairport Convention's "Liege & Lief" and Velvet Underground & Nico - and they ARE the signature albums lol.
The closest I get to disagreeing with popular consensus is that I prefer Billy Joel's "An Innocent Man" and "River Of Dreams" over "The Stranger" (Signature) - not that the latter is a bad album, and Queen II.
Maybe I need to get out more!!
Here's a few cases of mine - but you'd be surprised at my love of 'signature' albums like Paranoid!
Led Zeppelin II, despite the fact the trademark album, like you said, is hailed as IV.
The Life Pursuit by Belle & Sebastian, but their trademark is said to be If You're Feeling Sinister.
2Pacalypse Now, as opposed to a lot of fans raving about All Eyez on Me.
Purple Rain rather than Dirty Mind - although they're both called Prince classics, DM is moreso by his fans.
Wow! I'm talking to this dude on a Billy Joel fan site, and he is "perplexed" that I have joined, considering I don't like *all* of Joel's output. What a Stepford :p
